According to the Mirror, Newcastle United are open to matching Arsenal’s supposed £15 million valuation of Kieran Gibbs.
The England international, who made his debut for the Gunners nearly a decade ago, has one year left to run on his current deal and looks a likely contender to leave the Emirates this summer.
As back up to Nacho Monreal, the 27-year-old made 22 appearances during the last campaign – his fewest since 2011/12.
What’s more, with Arsenal on the verge of announcing the free signing of Schalke’s Bosnian international Sead Kolasinac and with Cohen Bramall – the January signing from non-league Hednesford – also waiting in the wings, Arsene Wenger looks well covered at left-back.
Arseblog News is a little surprised by the £15 million fee that has been mentioned, but then again there’s always a premium for English players in the prime of their career. Whether Newcastle, or any other club for that matter, are willing to go that high remains to be seen…but it does look likely he’ll be part of a clear out.
Yesterday, Yaya Sanogo confirmed he’d be leaving the club. Other likely candidates to leave include Mathieu Debuchy, Carl Jenkinson, Joel Campbell (all out of contract in 2018) and David Ospina. Question marks remain over the futures of Wojciech Szczesny and Jack Wilshere, while the club is still trying to persuade Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay. The latter appears to be leaning towards a new deal at the Emirates.
So…to the poo-o-meter. Gibbs to leave, quite possibly. To Newcastle, not so sure.
Sad to see Gibbo go but for team to progress we need some changes. He’s been an excellent player for us and Newcastle under Benitez will at least be trying to play nice football rather than West Brom and Pulis. Best of luck to him wherever he ends up
I feel sorry for him. 4 years ago he looked so promising but ever since his career has just stood still. I think Newcastle is the perfect place for him to go. It’s still a big club that he’ll get regular game time. Benitez is trying to get a British core and it’ll be good for Gibbs. Wish him all the best of luck in the future. True gooner.
15 mil is a very good price, all the best Gibbo!
When you consider the 55 Mio for stones it’s actually pretty cheap. The market has gone completely bonkers in the last years so it’s about time we benefit from that as well. Sold many of our players way to cheap in the past, if you ask me. Gnabry the latest example.
Unfortunately though we keep putting ourselves in the position of only selling players once their contracts are about to run out = we get far less for them than we should. That’s my one complaint about these neverending loans we seem to do with players Wenger doesn’t fancy.
to me previous seasons they don’t perform unless their contracts remain 2 years. Last season Sanchez didn’t perform and was injured but this season he played through injuries because he want high salary or negotiate to another team… Arsenal is no win win with players and bad publicity the club generate
Nobody in their right mind pays 55m for John Stones
but Rob Holding for 2 million!
Wenger’s saving up the money for M’Bappe!!! Oh, a guy can dream 🙂
Gazidis and Wenger spotted in Nice (closest airport to Monaco)…
Always hoped he’d make the left back position his own but he wasn’t quite good enough. Looks like he’s on the way out so good luck to him wherever he ends up
Sad to see him go. A real humble person who never once complained. Pity about his injury proneness, he deserves regular playing time somewhere else now that Sead to Arsenal is more or less confirmed.
Makes a lot of sense. Newcastle currently have Dummett at left back who is Championship quality at best. £15m for Gibbs is a very good deal, thank you very much.
Great!
If he joins Newcastle and gets a regular run I reckon we might regret it. But good luck to him whatever, class act.
Tidy enough as a player, and a good professional. He just doesn’t offer enough going forward to work in the new formation. At 27, he really deserves a chance to play every week, and sadly I can’t see that being with Arsenal. Good luck to him.
Looks like Szczesney is on the way to Juve for a similar amount if Sky Sports is to be believed. Shame as I thought after his Italy spell it now seemed the perfect time for him to come back and try challenge Cech, also 14M seems relitively cheap for a goalie who kept Serie A’s most clean sheets, in todays market at least.
30m to spend on new players
Newcastle would be great. Hopefully with regular football he can improve and push for the England squad. Thanx Gibbs and for that goal too
sad to see him go but is for our own good is time we make changes in the direction of where the club is headed to
He’s been a good player for us, but it’s good to see squad renewal. Him and Monreal pushed each other, I think one season they were neck and neck, but it’s natural for this to happen and now he can push on somewhere else. Would like to see Right Back sorted out this Summer. Who is our second choice there?
Here’s the thing though : I don’t think he has pushed Monreal for quite a long time. I think he’s just stagnated the last few years & settled for being a squad player. Good luck to him wherever he goes but he should have done better for us than he has done.
Gibbs is injury prone, that’s why his development is tend to stale. When Monreal first come to us, he is no better than Gibbs and now look, Monreal become one of our reliable player.
Gibbo can link up with Isaac Hayden who joined The Toons last year. Wherever he ends up, wishing him all the best. Always does his job and never complains, even when not selected. Gonna miss him.
I think £15 million is about right for Gibbo. He’s probably the best 2nd choice left back in the league. His development has been curtailed by injuries but he always puts in a shift and he’s always seemed to actually give a shit which is more than can be said for some. I like him and will be sad to see him go but got his own sake I think he needs a regular starting place in a prem team. He’s a great professional. Newcastle is a decent place for him to go and I wish him all the best… Read more »
If he does the business up there, we can always buy him back in 2 years.
Hope we can get good money from him, start saving for the big one.
Sell him if it’s true £15 million he isn’t worth that much plus if we have got the back up already free from Germany Gibbs won’t play much.
Good luck Gibbs.
He’s become one of our most senior players, and always acted as a professional. I was pleased to see him with the captain’s armband a couple of times. If he goes, I hope he does well, stays fit, and gets another few caps before he is done.
Newcastle may be a good move for Gibbs.
We also have to shed Jenkinson, Elneny (both mediocre), Debuchy, Jack (both injury prone and unfocused) Campbell, Lucas (both OK but need playing time) and preferably Theo ( we should get good value still while we can)
Most likely if this is true, it may confirm a left back coming in like rumoured Kolasinac. We will need options at left wing back/Lback with jury still out on Bramall who needs experience on loan, and Monreal wrong side of 30yrs.
