Looking at the first team squad on the official website it appears that four young players have been added to the list for the new season.
Perhaps with the Europa League in mind, Cohen Bramall, Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock have been promoted into the main group.
Whether they all stay at the club for the season ahead remains to be seen, as loan moves would make some sense for a couple of them at least.
However, Maitland-Niles made seven appearances – mostly in the cups – during the last campaign, while Nelson has been the stand-out star of pre-season and is likely to get opportunities to impress in more meaningful games.
Bramall has been linked with a number of Championships clubs and could well spend 2017-18 getting the regular football he definitely needs, but for now the foursome will train and work with the senior players as they continue their development.
They’ll also need to do something about their squad numbers. Currently Nelson wears 69, and Willock 60 – they need a bit of subtraction before they get involved.
Good luck to them
New brooms, sweep clean boys!
Can’t wait for Reiss to retire and take up that journalism career.
Nelson’s column.
that was Hardy worth the effort!
I could kiss you
For all of his faults, this is my favourite thing about the boss that he does give the lads from the academy the chance to play for Arsenal. And literally no other club or manager does that, and if they do, nowhere near as consistently as Arsene.
The key is obviously getting the balance right between bringing in the requisite quality of senior player to make us as competitive as possible, yet still having room for the exciting youth prospects.
Hate to say it, but Pochetino at Spurs does it well. Southampton are great at bringing through young players too.
What is this broom joke about too? I’m confused.
No you are mistaken.
Literally only Wenger does it. Literally!!!!!
And pochetino has been successful at it for how long?
Exactly @Davidace He hasn’t been successful at any point. Not at Southampton, nor at Spurs.
Being successful requires winning something at some point surely?
@The_Giant I’m sorry my friend, but don’t be fooled by the Media. That’s what they want you to think. Pochetino is a very good manager, but he hasn’t actually brought that many players through the youth ranks at Spurs into the first really, if at all. Harry Kane (off the top of my head) is there only player that has actually come up through the youth ranks, and Pochetino didn’t bring him into the first team – I am fairly sure it was Villas-boas. Dele Alli they bought from MK Dons in 2015. Kieran Trippier they bought from Burnley in… Read more »
What about the genius that is Harry Winks? Still not sure that’s spelt right.
Harry Winks is actually a product of their youth academy.. but he literally doesn’t play ever. So lets look at all of the Spurs players that the magical Pochetino has brought through the youth set up. And lets not forget he is the greatest manager of all time because he has literally won nothing, ever. – Harry Winks And if we look at all of the Arsenal players that the worlds worst footballing manager of all time, Arsene Wenger, who’s only won the Premier League 3 times (one of those times without losing a single game), oh, and the total… Read more »
At Southampton they are given years to develop. At Arsenal if they have 2 bad games in a row people are calling for the managers head.
Nobody else coming in then?
The season has started… So, unsurprisingly, a first team squad needs to be listed…
Sorry to be immature, but … I can’t help feel that Reiss picked shirt number 69 for “banter”!
He should have picked “95” and tell the whole world how super awesome he really is.
He wanted 52, but Wenger got mad and sent him to an English tutor to learn the meaning of, ‘the greatest striker that EVER lived’
Apparently, Man City have adjusted their squad numbers too. The Captain’s taken the No.2 and Gundogan the No.3. Categoric proof that 2’s Kompany and 3’s a Kraut. Yes, yes, yes – coat. I’ll get it.
Thumbs up!
Academy players’ numbers really just go by alphabetical order. And actually it’s Willock who wears the number 69 shirt in the first team games, Nelson is 61.
So he doesn’t give it back?
So selfish. But so is Rinaldo.
Thats what I’d go for. If I was Sead I’d want 666
Big fan of manned space exploration.
Do you know that Wenger has an Asteroid named after him?
No. It’s so that it reads the same when he’s standing on his head. He was gonna choose 88…..
Wasn’t Willock #69 and Nelson #61?
I know apart from Bramell they’re all under 21 so don’t technically count in our squad of 25.
But I wonder if this is to do with outgoing homegrown players?
Gibbs?
JW10?
Chambers?
Martinez (loan)
Akpom?
Walcott?
Welbeck?
Jenks?
Reine Adelaide?
Ox? (I seriously hope not)
We’ve lost Szczesny permanently
Not saying we’ll lose all of these, but realistically I think we’ll lose at least 6.
For the status of homegrown players, you should really count the not-homegrown. Currently we have 13. Maximum is 17. So this is not a worry.
We currently have 18 non homegrown players which isn’t a problem. Because Campbell is injured and probably won’t be registered. Gabriel, Debuchy, Perez probably leaving. That gives us potentially room for three non homegrown player arriving. However We currently have 14 homegrown players over the age of 21. We can only register a total of 25 players A maximum of 17 non homegrown players A minimum of 8 homegrown players over 21. Which gives you a 25 man squad. We currently have a squad of 36. 32 players I believe who we have to register in our 25 man squad… Read more »
not sure why you have been down voted here? You are just pointing out some facts no?
We’ll Lose 6?? You have too much pessimism in there for a realistic view.
Hardly pessims
Hardly pessimism.
Gibbs has been replaced with Kolasniac and we’ve just promoted Bramell.
Jenks played 1game last season and has less than 12 months remaining.
JW10 has less than 12months, wasn’t needed last season and it would be extremely difficult to warrant a new deal.
Akpom wasn’t needed last season and is even further away from the first team this season.
Chambers wasn’t needed last season and Arsene doesn’t look convinced.
Reine Adelaide could probably do with a loan.
We have a first team squad of 36 and only two of them are goalkeepers.
If we want to sign a centre half and another midfielder? The realism is we need to shift 9 or 10. We need to shift 8 regardless even if we don’t make anymore signings. And that’ll still leave us short in the GK department. Unless Arsene think’s Macey is ready to step in? If we then wanted to sign Draxler or Lemar or a player in a forward position? One of Walcott, Welbeck, Ox, Ozil, Alexis, Giroud will have to make way. If I had to take a punt I think a centre half is most likely to come in.… Read more »
Why can’t he enjoy his 69?
Where’s the Jeff these days?
Last I heard was disciplinary problems. He might be sent out on loan.
He was injured at start of pre season that’s why he didn’t go on tour. He made his comeback last week for the under 23s along side Jack
Reiss Nelson is the only 1 thats ready. To be honest the rest should be sold out.
All 32 of them?!
Where is Bielik, hè deserves it aswell also Eddie. Why bring up Cohen that fast into to first team.
He’s on loan to Norwich.
Why a thumbs down for stating a fact ?
He didn’t go, the deal wasn’t done.
Am i the only one who only sees Maitland-Niles from that list actually on the club’s first team player profile page? Also, doesn’t Willock wear 69 and Nelson 61?
Maitland-Niles was promoted earlier so the others might not just have been added yet to the profile page.
Awesome. I hope bramall doesn’t go on loan tbh. He’s 22 on a one year deal and it’s really difficult to see how he’d ever break in to the side if he goes on loan. Hopefully he can benefit from being around the first team and get some minutes in cup games. Just think he’s in a bit of a unique situation.
Can we make the transfer window a bit more exciting lol and buy another player?
What? No Nketiah?
I’m all for a player establishing himself at the top of the game with the number 69.
Can’t wait to see what Cohen be bramall can bring to our squad he looks a lively play and wouldn’t want to see him on loan .
Side note,
Those player photos on the Arsenal website are terrible.
Coen Bramall was an excellent find by our Director of Footy. Willock has been an interesting player pre-season. Matiland Niles I ‘m not sure what to make of him but clearly he is one of those that can cover practically any position. I bet he can even go in goal. But the one that looks truly set for first team exposure is Reiss. I think we should have him RWB. We have Kolasinac and Bellerin with Ox on either flank (his dual portfolio should be translated as a positive for him) But Reiss can also offer something right side without… Read more »
