Per Mertesacker and man-of-the-match Mesut Ozil faced the Sky Sports cameras after Arsenal’s 5-2 win against Everton – report and goals here.
Here’s what they had to say about the result, the performance and finally bagging some goals on the road.
On the win…
BFG: We started really well and 1-0 behind was difficult but we stuck to the game plan and we created a lot of chances, especially first half. We couldn’t execute but in the second half, after saying about it at half time, our guys up top did it. It was crucial that we had Mesut today and the way he created chances and made the important goal. He was very good for us.
On showing heart…
Ozil: At the end of the day we’re so happy to win the game. We knew it would be difficult at Everton but we showed character, we believed in ourselves and at the end of the day we are happy to win the game.
On playing alongside Sanchez and Lacazette…
Ozil: In training, we always show our quality together, so today on the pitch you see it from the start until the end. We played really well in front of goal. We were a little bit unlucky in front of goal, but especially in the second half we showed our quality. We scored, Alexis and Lacazette, so we were really happy.
On taking chances…
BFG: You could sense that from the start, we created chances and that’s what we never lack. We just lacked the execution in the away games [this season]. Even when we were 1-0 down we showed that we stuck together and we had a good game plan. We knew that they were under pressure and we took advantage.
On showing character with two wins this week…
BFG: We speak directly to each other. We analysed well the situation. We don’t need other people to judge what we do, I think the only answer you can give is on the pitch. The way we’ve dealt with the situation away from home is magnificent.
We have some great players and when they are playing together have a chance against any team. Let’s hope they stay fit. And we had two players on the bench that had scored 100 goals for us and we didn’t bring either one on!
In many ways I’m looking forward to this season, the Europa league is better than I thought, we can do well in the league with a fit team and we can always do well in the FA Cup.
Who would thumb down that comment but a committed wet blanket?
If only ozil can play like that more often…
Before today’s game I was trying to convince myself that I wouldn’t care if he left.. then he goes and puts in a performance like that!
I don’t think our starting 11 is worse compared to any other top 6 teams in the league, on paper. Even City doesn’t look too formidable, on paper. BUT, and I say it with a heavy heart because I absolutely love the man, but the difference this season will come down to the guys on the touchline, and I’m afraid that’s where we will fall short when it comes to competing for the league title. That of course doesn’t mean we can’t have “good” season finishing in the TOP 3 maybe and have a good run in the Europe and… Read more »
We won a game. Any comment slightly negative to aw will be down voted and the other way when we lose
Let’s see if you are this positive in a few weeks
Let’s see if you are this negative in a few weeks.
Consistency is the issue.
We have an excellent team and they can get away with free form that Wenger prefers against less organise opponents. Its when opposition organises to target our own specific weaknesses on the day that our system fails us because Wenger ‘s preference is non interventionist.
I’m starting to salivate at the prospects of this Laca-Ozil-Sanchez trident…COYG!
That picture reminded me of that one with BFG and Sanchez after we beat Chelsea to the FA Cup final! That expression on Sanchez’s face!
Mesut Özil was great today. As it is, it’s his first assist (and his first goal) this season, but I believe they were saying he’s created more chances today than anyone in any game in the PL this season so far.
It was also the first game this season (in all competitions) in which Olivier Giroud hasn’t been on the field.
Green Thumbs!! One isn’t enough.. We scored 5, green thumbs for everyone!! yabadabadooooooooooo…..
He was awesome (in the real sense of the word) today. At his spellbinding best.
Better to have his abilities than not. Fantastic vision.
I thought we may have had to start Iwobi who has also been sparkling but Ozil is now coming into his best years.
Jackie Boy!!!
I adore the BFG. Just saying.
Head and shoulders above everyone-else.
Take more than one result away to a piss poor Everton before we can start saying magnificent away from home
Agreed. Our away form has already cost us a title shout this season. The only thing this can do is pile more misery onto Everton and Ronald Koeman, and perhaps cost the Dutchman his job.
Funny how Everton boss was tipped to replace Wenger not too long ago …just like Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.
Meanwhile cult of Liverpool must be celebrating the day they signed Jurgonna Flopp and the Ox.
We have our problems but as per usual, the media likes to embellish the crisis.
Mertesacker had a great game. Difficult to understand why he was out of the squad for so long based on his recent performances. Looks solid in a back three.
