Reports: Jack Wilshere to sign a new deal

It’s being widely reported this morning that Jack Wilshere is on the brink of signing a new deal with the club.

The midfielder had, until now, found the terms on offer unacceptable to him, but something has changed over the last couple of weeks now he seems willing to put pen to paper on a three year contract.

?

Arsene Wenger spoke about the 26 year old’s future at his press conference yesterday, saying, “The latest conversation I had with Jack looks positive for the club.

“I am not involved in the negotiations anymore but of course I am still in touch with Jack. If he wants my advice, I will give it to him. I’m convinced, like I always was, that his future is here.

“It was always my wish, and I think it will happen.”

Arsenal had offered a lower basic salary but a deal that could net him more via incentives like success and appearances, and if the reports are accurate, then maybe there has been a modification to that.

Wilshere has made 20 Premier League appearances this season (12 starts, 8 sub), scoring once and making three assists, the same tally he provided in 13 Europa League appearances. He also played 5 times in the EFL Cup.

Great news! Letting him go would make zero sense. Even if he doesn’t start many games, he’s an invaluable squad member.

Pachvasilion

Invaluable? Hardly. Dude barely gets a handful of goals and assists a year. And that’s when he’s even healthy enough to play. Or when he doesn’t start bitching for playing time he doesn’t earn to the point of fleeing off to some other club on a loan for a year (and fail to impress there, too) rather than either try and beat out the starter at his spot or adapt his game to fit in at a spot where the team lacks quality. Letting him go makes ALL the sense IN THE WORLD. It’s keeping him, especially for 100K+ a… Read more »

afan

it makes more sense than keeping ozil

Finlay307

You don’t know a lot about football.

Futsboller

Jack hasn’t been consistent for a while, but I think that beautiful move to beat his man and then set up Kolasinac for the third goal against Burnley is an indication of what he is still capable of when fit (he left Cork scrambling with his shorts round the ankles …). Clearly it does not impress you, but it’s that kind of play that has Arsenal’s football folk interested again. He needs to be better, and more consistent to justify a new contract if he signs one, but I have no doubt that’s exactly what he intends to do with… Read more »

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Agree, Wenger never questioned his quality. Just yesterday, Wenger said he went from superstar to being loaned for a year. The only valid question : Will he come back to his previous level?

High gunner

I feel he started the season really good, and then faded a bit.. but lets not forget this was his first FULL season in ages, and as blogs wrote some weeks ago, wilshere just seemed to have run out of gas and needed a breather.. i find that totally normal that Jacks form was influenced by him having heavy tired legs.. hopefully he can get some rest during the summer, even tho there is a world cup, and then come back healthy and fresh for a new season with more energy

Frank Bascombe

Bang on sir… Bang on.

Finlay307

He isn’t the worst player in the team ( there a few contenders) but I think his chances of becoming a top player are behind him. He doesn’t look very mobile anymore. I can see the logic in keeping him because it costs a lot to buy players. But I really think we should cut our losses with him and go another route.

Matt P

I agree with much of what you have said. This may seem harsh but he’s really not that great.
Having said that I think he has value as a squad player

IamaGoober

I think Jack was always going to sign for Arsenal at the end of the day. His contract demands did just seem like it was posturing from his agent trying to get the largest pay packet for his client. But the club were always going to play hardball, especially given Jacks injury record.

So if he does sign an extension its down to Jack now; stay fit, play well, and subsequently earn more money.

Atom

I think it likely had far more to do with Jack figuring out he didn’t really have any attractive options to stay in the PL. By Arsenal upping the offer a little he at least can save some face.

Martin

As he hasn’t been on the transfer list how does gage know what the options are?

Atom

It’s pretty naïve if you believe his agent hasn’t been already gauging interest in him.

SharpasFc

When you have a certain amount of time left on your contract you are free to talk to other clubs.

TCGNR

Bummer. He’s fine, but I just don’t see him as a crucial part of a re-build. He’s hot/cold, fit/injured, you never know who is gonna show up. He would have been the perfect player to sell and re-invest the cash.

Futsboller

His contract is up and we’d get nothing for him. The rebuild will happen at Arsenal, but I don’t think we should expect it to happen next year. I imagine the new coach will come in and see what he can get from the current squad and academy prospects next season, with perhaps 2-3 additions to improve our competitiveness over the summer and perhaps a few departures (still a little concerned Ramsey might be heading elsewhere). Sven will continue to identify the talent with the new coach’s input next season, and next summer we should see a broader reconfiguration of… Read more »

Mayor McCheese

My God, this is just so…sensible!

Mpls

You’re right. I think Futsboller must have made a wrong turn somewhere. Could someone please help with proper directions?

Double98

The boss obviously has no interest in taking him on a free to everton…

oh its so weird to think of wenger in someone else’s long duvet zippy coat…

Uhtred

Obviously I don’t know anything about what happens behind the scenes but I just don’t see him going to another English club.

Damo Dinkum

If he did he’d probably try to sit out matches against Arsenal, as if he was on loan. I don’t think Everton would go for that.

Martin

You surely don’t believe he will become manager at Everton?

Pedant

You surely don’t believe that anyone in the world believes he will go to Everton?

afan

why not, usmanov is there and with his money, who knows what could happen

Martin

Usmanov is not there and he is the second major shareholder at Arsenal. Can you really see Arsene Wenger going to another English team?

Tas Gunner

Trolls are usually blind to facts

ramgooner

Even if he did go to Everton he wouldn’t take Jack with him on a free. Arsene’s got some class.
I personally have no issues with him moving to Everton. I would be so happy if he does a fantastic job there and finishes above Sp*rs, Chelski Liverpool, United and City.

I’ll be rooting for Everton to finish in the top 4 and us for the league title(obviously).

Laughing Stock

I know how things can go with Jack but I thought he was looking like his 2011 self on Sunday. That little drift across the opponent and quick burst to get between the lines, it’s the first time I’ve seen it for years.

lari03

It is defined as end product and it is welcome.

Alex

My God, he’s done one good action during the year! Yahou!

loose_cannon

Everyone was saying he needed to change his game to prevent more injuries, but when he did he lost the bit about him that made him so special. He’s still a good player without it but not a starter, glad he’s showing what he can do again.

the only sam is nelson

Good – let’s hope we don’t end up selling him for peanuts when he’s 28 and enjoying the peak of his powers as his contract enters its last 12 months, though… That would be Allardyce/Allegri/Anceloti/Arteta/Comte/Dyche/etc etc OUT! material

Pachvasilion

Peak of his powers? LOL! More like “last of his powers” as we struggle to even get 8 figures in the transfer market for an oft-injured has-been who struggles to get into the side even when healthy and is on a wage packet so big that no interested club will be able to get him to agree to give it up for more playing time. Kinda like what happened with Theo Walcott and his laughable 130K+ a week wage packet that we were stuck with for the better part of this last decade. Except Fat Sam and Everton were stupid… Read more »

baz00r

Walcott wasn’t that bad. At least he could score goals. I would take Walcott over Iwobi any day of the week.

Charles

Hard Truth, but lots of folks won’t feel comfortable accepting that fact (especially our English folks). Walcott, Wilshire and Welback (to some extent) are mostly over hyped and overrated by the English media. They are not in the class where they’re being currently placed. Wilshire makes a lot of mistakes and losses the ball a lot in the middle of the pack more often than not (same thing Sanchez was accused of a lot in the English media), thereby bringing unnecessary pressure on our defence. Bottom line is that the club should have let him go to make space and… Read more »

Pachvasilion

Damn it. DAMN IT!!!! We REALLY didn’t need to sign this guy. Especially not if he’s going to get 100K plus guaranteed a week or whatever. Why are we keen to sign an inconsistent, injury-prone, unreliable central attacking midfielder who does not fit into the squad’s best 11? And most importantly, why oh WHY are we doing this before the new manager comes in? If the new manager does not fancy him or does not feel he fits his system, then guess what? We’re stuck paying 100K+ a week to a player who has little resale value, no interest in… Read more »

Danny

Sit down fella, have a cup of tea. It’s not your 100k a week, and some people would consider this good business. Personally I’ll be chuffed to nuts if he signs, I think he’s a fucking marvellous player, and free from this contract palava, with two nearly full seasons under his belt I reckon he’ll be back to his best before long.

baz00r

Calm down princess. We can always sell him next year for I don’t know, not for free?! There are a lot of games in the season, EPL, FA Cup, EFL and Europa. Nobody said he is going to be a starter in the main competitions. You would have to go a long way to find a better squad player, he was our best player in the first half of the season.

Remember we aren’t City and aren’t bankrolled by an entire country. We can’t have world class players playing in the second tier competitions.

SharpasFc

I’m with you, people forget that we need depth to our squad…the lack of it was shown in competitions such as the FA Cup this year.

Atom

have to wonder to what extent this deal was done simply to get the fans on board with new management “team”

Charles

Making decisions based on sentiments has been Arsenal’s barn prior to now. They should allow him to move on.period!

Danny

I think pachvisilion might be having his period.

Pachvasilion

Nope, just fed up with the mediocrity and insistence on making the same mistakes over and over again.

And bringing back the same old people who failed to keep making those mistakes over and over again.

Chicagogooner9

This is fantastic news. My only concern now is what does the future hold for Ramsey? Hope Rambo extends his as well.

Pachvasilion

Oh GOD no. That’s the LAST thing we need: To keep all those players who have been here and are directly responsible for our collapsed to mediocrity and the Europa League. We need to overhaul and rebuild the squad, and make it fit better with our best players. Ramsey and Wilshere do not play well with Ozil. Ozil is our best attacking midfielder. He needs a DM, wingers, and wide players to help him balance the squad and perform to best capability. He doesn’t need 3-4 CM types who all look to run down the middle, can’t get wide, and… Read more »

Ozzil

We sell Ozil and build a team around Ramsey.

Ozil is the most overpaid deadweight in the history of football.

Capn Crunch

I have a feeling we’ll name him captain, as an additional incentive to get him to stay. And I’m totally down for that, he’s got the experience and was the youngest ever Welsh captain.

Twatsloch

To me Ramsey is similar to Wilshire. He can stay or he can go. No massive impact on us either way. Both of them are replaceable.

ColouredArsene

In light of our current financial (if reports on money for transfers are to be believed) and managerial situation, you must be really silly be believe that.

Godfrey Twatsloch

41 thumbs down and counting but give both of them a familiar slump and it’s knives out again.

Eric

Obviously has never reached his full potential (and maybe he never will), but I’m very happy to see him re-sign. One of my favorite players in the current squad. If nothing else, it’s important to have someone on the pitch who really cares about the club.

Kwame Ampadu Down

Really good news. I’ve been completely baffled by those on here lately who couldn’t care less if he left. Our squad needs a large overhaul as it is so letting Jack go on a free (and having to buy to replace him) makes no sense at all.

Pachvasilion

And that overhaul could use that extra roster spot and the 100K+ in wages that we will be spending to keep Wilshere. Wages and a roster spot that could instead have gone to a DM or a wide attacker. Not yet another central attacking midfield type who’s best qualities and preferred playstyle clash and are wasted on a team that starts the best pure No. 10 currently in the world (Mesut Ozil). THAT is why people could (and should) not care less if he left. Not to mention him leaving would be another step in moving on from the failures… Read more »

Kwame Ampadu Down

Roster spot ? Think you’ve got the wrong sport mate. Might explain the anger issues.

Pachvasilion

We have 25 roster spots, or squad spots, whatever you want to call them. We literally cannot register any more players to play than that (unless people get sold or whatever).

How about you try actually carrying on with a conversation rather than being a nitpicking smartass for once?

Merlin's Panini

Good lad. Pleased to hear it if it really happens. He’s had a decent season. Will be looking for more from him next season (particularly more goals). Hope he gets the World Cup spot he desperately wants.

shokim

Atta boy! I think Jack signing is a no brainer when you think of some of the team mates calibre he’s playing with. I feel there’s a good camaraderie among this bunch of players right now. Moreover he has a young settled family in London and his wife is due anytime…

Vonnie

What on earth has his wife’s pregnancy got to do with anything?. Jack is an unreliable player who could easily be replaced with better. He doesn’t merit a salary increase because he’s like Theo, talks the talk but doesn’t put in the performance often enough. Waste of money in my opinion, and I can’t think of many teammates who are worse than him, to be honest. Oh, I forgot about his pashun, silly me.

shokim

Remember Giroud? He was reluctant to leave London after having had a new baby. Just a Guess at this point anyway.

V h

Great! We lose a player coming into his prime with the potential to be world class in Ramsey but we keep a world class sulk in Jack.

He is World class in losing possession though.

baz00r

How do you know we are losing Ramsey? You must have inside information…..

Tas Gunner

Pretty common sense if you ask me.sell or lose for free next summer.and its not inside information.ramsey himself talked about going abroad, specifically spain/barca a couple season back.with no ucl and 10 years of service,he will more than likely seek one last hurrah and a change of scenery.

Martin

I haven’t heard that Ramsey is leaving.

TeeCee

Neither has anyone else, apart from the bloke who writes the bullshit transfer rumours column that’s syndicated to all newspapers.

Tas Gunner

Shhh..its the open season on ozil.change your scale according to the weather man! jack is our capitano.no hate!

Twatsloch

Maybe he and his agent realised that demand elsewhere is limited and the deal on offer at Arsenal is better than anywhere else. I think he’ll be useful to us. Not vital but useful.

Tas Gunner

No.Arsenal realised jack is better than ozil,de bruyne and pogba combined and real is set to offer 100m for his service this summer, thats why we panicked and offered the new deal.why don’t you see the bigger picture that so many long term,”true” gunner fans will tell u that they see.believe in that…

Godfrey Twatsloch

I see it Tas, now finally I see it!

Kwame Ampadu Down

‘Maybe he and his agent realised that demand elsewhere is limited and the deal on offer at Arsenal is better than anywhere else. ‘

Are we still talking about Jack ? Or Ozil ? Or Ospina ?

Godfrey Twatsloch

Take a wild guess, Your Smugness.

Kwame Ampadu Down

No need to be so angry sir. Was just a joke…and not particularly aimed at you truth be told….just pointing out your comment (which is probably true) could easily apply to quite a few of our squad…

Romford Pele

Whatever your opinion on Jack, its makes sense to retain a squad that will provide options for the incoming manager

afan

that’s great news, make him captain as well, and I hope he keeps HIS number ten shirt

Alex

Oh, yeah, we know you hate Özil… And don’t worry, dear Jack will keep his n°10 and the good next manager will go on putting Özil on the wings to accomodate the Marvel of England.

Tas Gunner

yeap.Give a statue as well eh afan? after all, ozil never sang “spurs is shit” thats what counts.

Stuart

I’m taking this as a positive sign that Wilshere is feeling confident that he can get regular game time by performing at a level that justifies inclusion in the starting 11. If injury gets in the way of that, then the club isn’t paying a super-high salary to a player who can’t play. Performance-incentivised salaries are not unheard of in other professions – no reason it can’t work in football.

Aamir

Good news. Now just need to sign up Ramsey. Plus one good Defensive midfielder.
Wilsh and Rambo are both too injury prone.

Martin

Neither have been this season

Alex

Everybody focused on Özil forget that Ramsey has played one game out of two these past months.

afan

so is OZIL, but at least they don’t pick and choose what games they play in

Tas Gunner

wenger played him and sanchez in every game even until late december.afterwards when it became clear our league chances are hopeless, wenger started resting him for low-key games in the league. So,what the fuck is “him choosing and picking when to play” about this? whats the main reason of your blind hatred against him AFAN?i’m genuinely curious.

Mr.pMr

Give him the arm band to help get it over the line

Goonero

As it’s so heavily implied, what about Arsene leaving has made Wilshere more amenable to staying?

Atom

it’s likely a combination of Jack realizing he has no strong alternatives in the PL (none of the top 5 want him other than to simply make up the quotas – and he’s mainly being linked with Everton & Wolves) and the club simply wanting to get the fans on board by keeping a fan favorite = strengthened his hand in negotiations. Jack’s main value to the club right now is that he’s home grown and the fans love him. He’s a decent squad player but he wouldn’t be starting for any of the top 5.

Martin

Linked with nobody as he’s never been on the transfer list or asked to leave

Atom

So you actually believe that Jack’s agent is waiting until his contract expires to have contact with other clubs to gauge their interest in him? I find it really hard to believe an adult football fan is actually that naïve.

Martin

I didn’t say that. I just said you cannot be linked with other clubs if you are not on the transfer list and in any case he hasn’t asked for a transfer. CNnot an adult football fan understand that?

Atom

his contract is running out. of course he’s finding out what his options are – just like literally every other player in his situation would do & I’m sure Arsenal does as well. You have a very naïve view of how the world actually works as you comment on this site over and over that anyone under contract surely can’t have discussed moving with another team beforehand

Zatara

He’s definitely been playing better, but I haven’t liked his chippy attitude when he gets tired. He makes stupid fouls when he gets frustrated. Mostly I was just curious if he left, would Ozil finally take the 10.

arsenal74

A midfield trio of Xhaka-Ozil-Wilshere, all three so slow and heavily left footed (and thus so predictable) will struggle any day of the week. Not the kind of signing we were hoping for. Wilshere is a squad player these days, sad but true.

Drew

What the fuck? Ozil isn’t slow! Where did you get that idea? He is always in space so doesn’t need to turn the speed on but he’s rapid enough when he needs to be.

Alex

Slow, lazy, not working for the team, diva, not good in great games.. you don’t know the trash press headlines? Oh, no, you watch the games. Yeah, some here don’t but they prefer reading the press.

Hantal

I suspect we’re pushing for Wiltshire because we think Ramsey’s going. Personally I’d rather let Wiltshire go regardless and let his squad place go to a youngster- hes inconsistent and his numbers aren’t better than a youngster would bring over a season

Drew

I hear Wiltshire is nice this time of year.

hustlesix

I used to take the P out of Ramsey all day long. Mr Backheel to nowhere etc.

But now I’m genuinely perturbed at the thought of us offering Jack a big contract and Ramsey basically asking for double those wages…because…he kinda can justify it in comparison to Jack. Again, not that much of a fan of Ramsey but he’s worth a hell of a lot more than lil Jacky boy.

In short -I hope his signing doesn’t have a knock-on-affect

Surrey Gooner

I personally think its a good bit of business. We don’t lose him on a free, If he stays fit he will only get better as his confidence in his body’s ability to handle playing regularly increases. People seem to forget how good he can be (like those who bitched about Ramsey). yes there is a risk but that has been softened with the structure of the new deal.
Really hope he goes from strength to strength cause he loves Arsenal.

shaka

whine whine whine whine

i am a pukka arsenal supporter now.

whine whine whine whine

am i doing this supporting thing okay?

whine whine whine whine

Kwame Ampadu Down

Poor shaka. He doesn’t like people whining so he reacts by whining about their whining without realising that his own whining is actually whining too and therefore he’s adding to the total level of whining that he says he hates and therefore he probably hates himself so he should do some whining about that too…but then he won’t realise that this to9 is whining and then aaaaggghhhhhhhhhhh……

Ozenal

Maybe whats delaying things is the size of Jack’s release clause? And now the club has softened its stance after he has made so many appearances this season.

David Hillier's luggage

Usefully player to keep hold on, particularly as we’re short on numbers in central midfield. Please don’t make him captain though, he hasn’t really taken command or led by example when given the armband, and on a practical level he doesn’t half mumble in interviews.

santori

This will be good news. Jack replicates some of what Santi use to give us. In fact it takes BOTH Jack and Granit to do so. Granit provides the long range passing accuracy that can switch our play and release us quicker on transitions. Jack provides the ability to carry the ball through feet up field. With the current midfield we have : Granit sitting deep, Elneny as an alternative. Jack linking, Iwobi looks also able to provide the same service. Ramsey, Ozil or Mhkitaryan who are more pass and play vision players. Then the forwards. I think We won’t… Read more »

santori

The other thing about Jack is the fight in him.

He knows what it means to put on the shirt.

We need that midfield terrier to give a bit of bite, every game means something to him.

May make a good captain for the club if he can keep consistent.

KingKolo

Although I wouldn’t cry too many tears if he left this is a good resigning. He may have a great season next season. Who knows? Either way there are plenty of Prem clubs out there who will pay 20m + for Jack at any point in the next three years…

Tas Gunner

Ozil benefited from arsenal.none would’ve given him 350k,that’s true, same way it’s also true clubs would’ve given him around 280k and least 20m signing on fee easily.so if u think we are doing him the favor, think again.the influence and impact of him staying with us far exceeds the 90 minutes weekly kickabout.appreciate what u have.we already are hated by most of the media.last thing we need is infighting even with wenger gone.

Thierry Bergkamp

So Jack just wanted confirmation that Arsene wouldn’t be around, before he committed his best years to the club.

Matt P

He can be a good squad player but there’s no way he is first team quality
