Great discussion. On pace in the CBs- i think patten and lotte will be the future pairing. Both are quite quick and tall. Leah can then push into defensive midfield. On rotation- pleasantly surprised to see the two youngsters come on against Reading. I think this readiness to sub youngsters in with the match in the bag will help. On UWCL- if we can step up the intensity and physicality, we should compete with the top teams. Good pt on VAR. Anyway, men’s football issues cant be solved by VAR as long as there is still inconsistent interpretations of rules.… Read more »

Thanks for answering my question again. I’ll forgive you for trying to pronounce my name correctly, Tim 😉 I especially agree with what you said about finishing games instead of keeping up pressure and how we seem to think of this as more of an issue than the players and staff. The nr of times I read that we slacked off in the second half, or that we seemed out of it in the second half. People seem to be very concerned that it’s a sign we can’t keep up high energy or finish strong. Most of these games we’re… Read more »

I think that’s a great point overall, but personally what I meant was not being as concentrated. I think we were meant to swap effort for control and I didn’t feel we quite managed it. We seemed a bit reactive at times.

Fun Gunner

Talking about the Reading game, that was.

Great podcast – thanks, Tim and Alex.

Injuries will decide whether we win one trophy or multiple trophies. I would love to see us recruit from another WSL team in January, even on loan, (*cough – Man City – cough*) because we will need the extra players. We are short of two outfield players IMO. It’s great that JE is actually using our kids in a meaningful way but we need a couple of senior players.

I suspect I know who you mean but personally the only players I would want from City that have not already played for the Gunners is Ellie Roebuck (but we don’t really need another goalkeeper), and Lauren Hemp. Everyone else they can keep!

Caroline Weir would be a fabulous addition!

Peter Story Teller

Yes she is good but is a previous Gunner so got excluded from my list!
Funnily enough I thought she was older than 26 she seems to have been around for a long time!

I was thinking of any two of Weir, Beckie and (lol) Mace… Maybe not realistic, I know, but they’re all versatile players. I don’t think Man City has got the best out of Beckie. Feel free to school me!

Tim Stillman

We could definitely do with another midfielder and I think that probably will happen in January.

Xuan

I would be glad if we continue to take on a pragmatic approach in terms of recruitment. Better to have depth and competition.

A really fascinating discussion – and I found myself agreeing with everything! I particularly think that a spine of Manu, Leah, Lia, Kim and Viv is becoming apparent. I’m really happy to be in our little bubble of women’s football, positive,
friendly and informed. (Off topic, but thinking if pronunciation of names, I’ve just been listening to “Marieke” by Jacques Brel.)

Interesting chat as always. Before I Iistened to the Podcast I had a re-run of the first game of title season pop up on YouTube ( the 5-0 dubbing of Liverpool, Viv hatrick) which I of course had to watch. Six of the starting eleven that day played against Chelski was my first observation; sorry, no, Leah was injured. It was the punditry chat that actually caught my attention , “Arsenal’s starting eleven is brilliant and as good as Chelsea and City but their squad is too light to win the title”….despite the injuries that piled up by some miracle… Read more »

As Tim has pointed out before, with the exception of Chelsea we have been no worse off than many other WSL teams. The problem with winning trophies has always been our underperformance against City and Chelsea with Joe in charge and with so few games in the league you cannot afford to be giving 6, 9 or 12 points away. I am enthused by the impact Jonas, and the players he has brought in, has had so far and we stood firm against Chelsea and got a result. Is this a honeymoon or a new era? I guess we’ll find… Read more »
