Mikel Arteta has urged Aaron Ramsdale to keep doing what he’s doing after his summer signing produced a man of the match performance against Leicester to help Arsenal to a 2-0 win.
Not for the first time since he came into the side in September, the goalkeeper was in inspired form between the sticks, on this occasion denying James Maddison with a stop that led ex-Manchester United stopper Peter Schmeichel to declare it the “best save I’ve seen for years.”
Best save I’ve seen for years by Ramsdale👏👏👏
— Peter Schmeichel (@Pschmeichel1) October 30, 2021
In real-time, Arteta thought the effort was destined for the net.
“I have just seen a picture, I haven’t seen the video footage but my reaction there when I saw the ball leaving Maddison’s foot, I said, ‘Goal’,” he said.
“So I don’t know how it happened, it was incredible – and the moment and the timing of it as well was crucial.”
When Ramsdale was initially linked with a move to the Emirates, it’s fair to say most supporters were underwhelmed by his credentials. Since signing on the dotted line, he’s barely put a foot wrong and has quickly established himself as a terrace favourite.
“We invest money in talent and people we believe can be great for the future of the club,” said Arteta.
“We made that decision based on that and Aaron has had some really encouraging performances, and today he had some incredible saves to maintain the clean sheet and he needs to continue to do that.
“In football you have to play 50 games for 20 years, and this is only the start.
He added: “I think he has settled in a group that is very welcoming that has young energy and with humble senior players that accommodate you straight away.
“Then Aaron’s character, he’s full of energy, he can transmit that energy and that passion and they have great chemistry between them.”
In a recent interview, Ramsdale outlined his ambition to become England’s number one by the time of the next World Cup. Setting big goals is something Arteta has no problem with.
“I think when you dream big, it is always positive,” said the Spaniard.
“Keep your feet in the earth, there are people who make those decisions but he needs to be doing what he’s doing every day.
“Train the way he trains, look after himself the way he does, have that mentality he has, and good performances. The rest will come.”
I’d prefer him to be jumping….
The footwork on that save (and others) cannot be understated. He’s a gem.
I’ve been woken at 5.15 this morning by my son assuming it’s time to start the party. My daughter was up most the night with a horrible cold. I’m really tired, a bit pissy and downing coffee like it’s life giving nectar. But I’m still fucking really happy!! Thanks Arsenal! Just thought I’d share that. Just about to watch MOTD and then can’t wait to listen to all the glowing podcasts over the next few days, starting with Le Grove this morning. If anyone doesn’t listen, it’s a really, really good one. Finds some space between the lines of AFTV… Read more »
Love his attitude to games he’s been one hell of a buy ! He just has that presence which seems to get the best out of the defence Leno is a hell of a keeper but Ramsdale just looks complete ! That save man !!!
That save…
Ramsdale is God.
God is Ramsdale
Tottenham is shit.
No, he’s not.
Unbelievable he was, one of the several shrewd signings we made this summer, the future does look bright, given the age profiles of the squad, and if we keep making these types of signings to strengthen the squad, we should be back up top of the table where we rightfully belong, jostling for top 5, sonner than we dare think , fingers crossed because I hesitate to get carried away, but the signs are good,no doubt. COYG!
10 games into the season, we are 5 points behind Liverpool and only 3 points behind City. We’re not fighting for the title of course, just wanted to offer some perspective. If we forget about the first 3 weeks of the season, which were a complete mess on so many levels, we have shown some very promising performances and stability. I think we can all agree that the top 3 spots are reserved for Chelsea, Liverpool and City, but I’m definitely hopeful that we can mount a decent fight for the 4th place. Solid top 6 remains the target for… Read more »
We finally have a balance across the pitch that doesn’t just predictably squeeze the ball into the left side at the halfway line. In this formation Tomi can venture forward and attack. It was strange hearing people say after 3 games he couldn’t do much if anything in attack, but it seems that it was mostly just our left side dominance. Balance the midfield and the flanks and he’s bloody useful supporting Saka down the right. Once again the most refreshing thing is just having an Arsenal team that is loveable across the whole pitch. I genuinely love all these… Read more »
Hard to see a spot for granit in the current side
After first game without Xhaka some were saying now that shows you how important he is to the team. I think we are playing at a level now that shows we are a different team when we are not governed by his style of play. Wish him well in his recovery.
The difference to the current team is not just the lack of Xhaka. Only time we played with Xhaka in the new set up with White, Gabriel, Tomiyasu, and Ramsdale behind a Partey-Xhaka axis is against Spurs and we did very well. My feeling is that he will be picked when he is available and there will be games that are suited without Xhaka and others with him.
Fully agree, this has been my issue with Xhaka being so key to our team for so long. So much of our imbalance stemmed from making him a key cog in the formation and minimising his weaknesses. We don’t have to do that now because the Konga-Partey is so mobile and they complement each other perfectly. One jaunts forward the other covers in behind (and vice versa). Partey is no longer a mostly off-ball player who’s role was to support the fulcrum (deeper left dominant Xhaka) to change the pace and try to advance the tempo through the lines and… Read more »
The thing I love about Ramsdale is the way that opposition players seem to show him respect. Not just at set pieces but also when he has the ball at his feet. While his playing style is modern, his personality feels very old-school.
Except Johnny Evans who tried to leave one on him, the twat.
Arteta needs to say something about the officiating. We’ve missed several opportunities to play against 10 men already this season, and it looks better to mention it after a win.
The Auba/Evans… Zaha/Laporte.
Exactly what I was coming here to complain about. Laporte get sent off just more hours after Evan’s got yellow for something similar. The officiating in this league is a joke, and it irks that we get to be embroiled in so much of the muck every season!
And Evans should have been on a yellow for the cheap shot on Ramsdale. Not good enough from the refs.
The pace of the fouled attacker has to be put into consideration in such situations, regardless of the distance from goal. Some cunty commentators were arguing that Auba was a distance off from goal. But there was no way Evans would have made up ground had Auba turned him. So, a red all day
Unfortunately – but not surprisingly – the match officials have brought the technology down to their poor level, which is saying something.
Agree, laporte made the same challenge as Evans, albeit closer to goal. The referee didn’t hesitate to send of laporte. There’s no doubt luiz or xhaka, or indeed any of our players would have been off.
Fuck Jonny Evans, bug eyed motherfucker. All pissy because he wanted to prove to himself he made the right choice by turning us down. He didn’t, and he’s not half the defender that White or Gabi are. Go cry in the showers you alien giraffe.
Certainly his completely intentional foul of Ramsdale deserved at least a yellow. His grabbing of Aubameyang, only a couple of minutes later, would have sent him off, even if wasn’t deemed worthy of a red card (which it was).
Haha! Nice.
Spurz just conceded a 3rd. altogether now, Totten*am get battered….
Literally everywhere they go, even if they don’t go anywhere, they get battered.
This Tuesday is the 5,000th day since they won a trophy.
Tottenham get battered everywhere they go… Everywhere they go 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Utd aren’t a good side, 4th is there for the taking. The spuds look like they could be in trouble. Nuno 6/4 favourite to be next manager fired. A good day all round.
Alien Giraffe 🤣
you go and pay what looks like a ridiculous amount of money for a relegated 23 yo goalkeeper and play him straight away ahead of your stablished no 1 keeper. and you keep playing him despite losing the first three matches. big balls from arteta and the coaching team, they truly deserve nothing but support. and i hope they get it the next time we lose three matches in a row again.
Leno was in goal for the 1st 3 losses. Ramsdale is unbeaten atm.
ah, wrote it while having a pint. that’s my excuse, thank you for clarifying!
Absolutely agree.
Blogs wrote that the Ramsdale signing would be on Arteta’s head if it didn’t work out. I think we can all now see how astute that decision was and what a truly brilliant signing Arteta and Edu made.
This kid looks destined to be the New England no#1.
Almost!
Honestly, who would have thought Ramsdale would end up the key transfer addition? Not me.
Or rather keep your feet in the air Aaron – we like it that way more.
Best keeper of the Emirates era in my books. Wojciech coming second, then a toss between Leno and Martinez for third.
Ramsdale Leno Martinez Szczesny Cech Ospina Fabianski Almunia Hard to place Martinez and Ramsdale cos they didn’t/haven’t actually play/ed that much for us. Gave Leno the edge over Martinez for that reason, and Ramsdale over Leno because of optimism. No chance was Szczesny better than Leno despite his Arsenal DNA. His positioning, anticipation, balance and footwork are impeccable, and because of that makes a lot of saves look easier than they are – especially close range ones. I think a lot of people underrate him for that reason. And also because of the slightly weird love in some still have… Read more »
This is such a good keeper review.
Only thing I’d say is we need to see Ramsdale over the season, bit early to call it, though 100% believe he can keep it up. He has been awesome. Agree Leno very talented too.
Jens Lehmann?
Its Jens Seamen..
Is that a New Age thing?
He’s been an absolute bargain for £30 million.
And an even bigger bargain at £24m
Yeah, but £23/4 million (varies per source) was the initial fee, which could rise to £30 million with add-ons.
I figure he’s going to meet all the targets playing like this, so he’ll have cost £30 million in the end.
Love Ramsdale, in fact i Love so many Arsenal players, i feel like i am being unfaithful! The future is bright…..
Keep doing what you doing Spider-Man /Magneto. Let’s keep the momentum going boys. Better days ahead
I was fortunate enough to be at match when we battered the spuds. AR was impressive on that day, not only with his performance but his passion. This lad will be a legend for his country and hopefully for the Arsenal for the rest of his career. Doob doob doob doob Aaron Ramsdale.
Nice onr
Excellent lad. If he keeps it up, England number one. I mentioned him before the summer and that we would be stupid not to get him. He was coming up with great stops even with an abject Sheffield outfit in relegation… but that was part of it… 1)He was getting a lot of play time and practise (Developing not at our expense) 2)He wasn’t going to second guess or rely on a non existent defense (like ours can be too). No nonsense, he is simply use to doing it all on his own sweeping everything in frnt of him when… Read more »
I’d love it if Arsenal have England’s number one again.
Great character.
