Southgate calls up Smith Rowe, Gabriel into Brazil squad

Gareth Southgate has handed Emile Smith Rowe his first call-up to the England senior squad with Marcus Rashford, James Ward-Prowse pulled, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw sidelined by various injuries and ailments.

The 21-year-old midfielder got the nod last night just hours after scoring Arsenal’s winner against Watford; his fourth goal of the season.

Smith Rowe has played for England at every age group since he was 15, was part of the under-17 squad became World Champions in 2017 and moves up to the seniors having made two appearances for the under-21s.

Aaron Ramsdale and Bukayo Saka are also in the mix for the matches against Albania and San Marino. A win on Friday can seal England a place at Qatar 2022.

In more good news for our players, Gabriel Magalhaes has earned his first selection for the Brazil national team who face Colombia and Argentina next week. The centre-back is another who benefits from an injury to a compatriot with Benfica’s Lucas Veríssimo sidelined.

Congratulations to both. Don’t you dare get injured.

This is both great and terrifying!

Futsboller

Yeah, it’s special for these young guys, but it is not going to help the Arsenal this season.

Bleeding gums murphy

Good news is esr won’t play so we are safe there and it’s a great experience. He was more at risk with under 21’s where he would have played. Fingers crossed for Gabriel

IamaGoober

You know what, this is great for ESR.

No doubt the exclusion from the England set up would’ve been playing on his mind, and been fairly tough to take considering the performances he has been putting in this season.

I’d say in football one of the worst feelings as a player is when you get overlooked by a manager or a coach when your tail is up and you feel like you’re playing at your best, so, I am delighted for him he is rightly included.

I just hope he comes back in one piece!

Wolsty

Agreed, being around and training with the squad will be brilliant for him, also seeing some friendly faces in Saka and Ramsdale too. With Southgate being soooo defensive minded ESR might not even play… either way hoping that all the lads away on Int. duty come back to us unscathed….COYG…

Cranky Colin

Noooooooooo🙀🙀🙀🙀!

Daveo

Seriously, I’d just rather he didn’t have to go and have to make friends with K*ne and his giant forehead and ego. But I’m not English…

Goonerink

I am English, but wholeheartedly agree.

Bleeding gums murphy

Off topic but we have not lost since we lost our most influential midfielder 😜

Daveo

Did Lokonga get injured?! What?! 😉

Unnecessarilystupid

He was playing for the u-21s anyway so it likely means he’ll play fewer minutes of competitive football. Its a net positive.

PeteyB

Congrats

John

Ian Wright said in his autobiography that going away with England was always great because you learned loads of new things and it improves you massively as a player. And if it’s good enough for Ian Wright, it’s good enough for me.

My Arse-nal

Good luck with England John!

The Peter Simpsons

Ha ha – brilliant!

David C

We don’t have Europe right now either so our lads are not really being overplayed. I wish them all luck!

Danny

Amen to that 🙏

Gandalf's Kebab

He didn’t have to deal with Harold ‘Flipper’ Kane

Daveo

Wrighty didn’t have to play with Ser Hairy of Kunt though did he?

The Beast

Well deserved!

Hope they both get loads of experience, a massive confidence boost & are wrapped in cotton wool from the second they get to their respective training camps to when they’re back home.

Maul Person

Both? You mean all three, yes?

ChickPEA

Well deserved for arguably our best two performers of the season with Ramsdale. A bright international future awaits if they keep playing this way.

jw1

So brilliant ESR may need darker shades.

Tucker

Can’t think of anyone more deserving.

I actually think this is good for us – ESR goes away with England and keeps learning, while at the same time probably playing fewer minutes than he would have done had he stayed with the U21’s and hopefully coming back fresher.

Db412

Exactly my thoughts 👌

Tucker

Also, congrats to Gabriel. Find it amazing that this is his first call up considering he’d walk into England’s set up and immediately be their best defender but it’s all he deserves for his performances this season

TeeCee

I agree, but I can’t help thinking that he’d actually walk into the England setup and sit on the bench, wondering why the fuck Maguire was playing rather than him.

Belfast Gooner

Well done to both players. What’s the current state of play with travelling back from Brazil at present. We really need Gabriel to be at Anfield for our next match.

Luton Gooner

Pretty sure players are allowed to travel there and back under special rules for international players. Think they have to quarantine when they get back for 10 days, but are allowed to leave their homes once a day to train or play.

Well Brazil have Alisson and Fabinho so that’s one excuse we can’t use against Liverpool.

Danny

Did you see Alisson yesterday?! 🤣

TeeCee

Seems he has a serious weakness. He really loses the plot if you get some big bastard to stand right on him and get in his face at set pieces.

Graeb

Just like Leno then!

Man Manny

The number of first team regulars called up for national duties gives me the jitters.
I have a strange feeling we’ll nick something from Anfield if our team is complete (I expect Partey to return).
I pray everyone comes back unscathed.

Meanwhile, a huge congratulations to E.S-R and Gabriel. This is added motivation for them to take their football to the next level. They’d want to keep their spots in the national team. Arsenal benefits.

allezkev

Well deserved by both players, I hope they both return as fit and as well as when they leave London Colney. My major concern is always their well-being under the auspices of international coaches who often play fast and loose with somebody else’s players.
Good luck to all our players, come back safe.

Ye3mmxviii

What would stop Arsenal from the challenge of the top spot in the EPL?

Daveo

Other teams

Sean

Other teams with more money

Never trusted this Southgate bloke. Now he’s called 2 of our players into the Brazil squad. Doesn’t he already have his hands full managing England?

President Eckener

Well, Smith-Rowe’s got no senior caps yet. It’s only natural for Brazil to snatch him up. This is the price England pay for dawdling on him.

chepetin

My young son was reading the Arseblog News headlines off my phone whilst I was driving and when I heard this one I wondered what he was talking about.

A Different George

My kingdom for a semi-colon.

Hopefully Karl Hein recovers from injury for the Belgium v Estonia game. That will be a fantastic experience for him who could be our #2 next season.

Ballard (Northern Ireland) and Rekik (Tunisia) also called up for their countries. As above, a good experience for Ballard if he plays against Italy.

Wonder if Arteta arranges another mid-season behind-closed-doors game (probably not against Watford).
Not many first team players left at Colney though, (Okwonko, Cedric, White, Holding, Chambers, Mari, Maitland-Niles, Lacazette, Nketiah, Martinelli) and we wouldn’t want to risk White, Laca, or AMN before Anfield.

Savage

Surely he’ll play for the U21s otherwise, so either way he’ll get that extra risk/fatigue?

Momozemio

How could we wish / dream to have the best footballer playing for the Arsenal and at the same time not accepting that they get selected by their Country for international football 😅
Congrats & all the best to them both👏

OnceAGunner...

Great news…Just don’t get injured

A Different George

England play Albania and San Marino. Brazil play Colombia and Argentina. I think Smith Rowe has a better chance of getting his first cap (with five subs allowed) than Gabriel.

Santi’s Thigh Grab

I would imagine Gabriel would start since the starter is injured.

A Different George

Maybe, but I don’t think Gabriel is number 3 on Brazil’s centre half depth chart.

Steinn

I just hope Ramsdale doesn’t become no. 1 right away…I mean no sane person would pick Jordan Pickford ahead of him but it should keep him grounded and motivated to improve to stay as no. 2 for a bit longer.

Teryima Adi

Congrats, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel. Continue to soar to greater heights.

Mpls

Wasn’t long ago -months, not years- that our squad’s International call-ups list was a fraction of this one-

While it puts more players at risk, it’s a very positive sign for the club!

Tommmy

I also remember the World Cup or euros we had the most players called up out of every team

Martin Tornberg

2006 World Cup. 15 players in different World Cup Squads: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_FIFA_World_Cup_squads

Brady’s bunch

Be nice to see Esr and Saka rip it up on either flank.

shokim

Congratulations to ESR on making his senior England debut! Although I hope he doesn’t play. Best of luck to Gabriel too.

chepetin

When ESR is driving into the box for a late winner in the World Cup Final, I hope Gabriel doesn’t put in a crunching tackle on him…

Santori

Good to see a good number of our players now attracting International call up.

Smith-Rowe and Ramsdale well deserve their England duties.

Gabriel another who has been in fine form since returning.

Mikels Arteta

Amazing that Southgate has the power to select Gabriel for the Brazil

Arif

Mentally, it’s good for him. Physically, it’s always worrying for fans.

Damilola

Congratulations to ESR.
I would say it’s about time.
Credit to Hale End as well.

Dami

I expect Benjamin White and Eddie Nketiah would join them soon.
