Arsenal confirm Vivianne Miedema ACL rupture

Arsenal have confirmed that Vivianne Miedema ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during Thursday’s 1-0 defeat to Lyon at Emirates Stadium.

Miedema landed awkwardly on the turf during first half stoppage time and left the pitch in a leg brace in tears, from there, the prognosis seemed pretty obvious.

An Arsenal statement read, “Viv will undergo surgery in the coming days and will unfortunately be ruled out for an extended period of time. A more detailed timescale will be established once the operation is complete.”

Miedema’s injury comes three weeks after Beth Mead sustained the same injury during a home defeat to Manchester United. It means that Arsenal’s two top scorers from last season are out for the season and the World Cup too.

All the best for a speedy recovery, Viv!

Very sad for Viv and team. Let’s hope for better fortune moving forward.

Beth Mead now up for BBC Personality of the Year! Get voting on the day!

The way she went down and didn’t move made me sick. Get well soon, Viv.

Bongogooner

Get well you two. Was looking forward to see the two vs zurich…

We knew, didn’t we? Let’s hope Viv recovers fully and follows Meado’s lead by committing her future to the Gunners!
It’s looking like it could be a busy January on the transfer market!
Can we have Chloe Kelly back please? Lauren Hemp would be nice too now the City force has faded just a bit!

On the topic of ex-players, we seem to be parting ways with the door firmly closed for any return (except beattie). Talking about players who leave us to play for other english clubs.
i have also always wondered why most of the ex-players seem to dissociate themselves from us? Not kelly smith, alex scott and faye white.. more Looking at the likes of karen carney, ellen white, katie chapman who played for other english teams..
So not too hopeful about getting chloe kelly back.

Both Kelly and Hemp signed new contracts at end of last season. City prioritized those two just as Stanway, Weir, and Bronze decided they were leaving

Hemp and Kelly signed new contracts at beginning of summer around the time that Weir, Stanway and Bronze decided to leave. Don’t see them moving any time soon

Huge blow. We can keep arguing whether the busy schedules contributes to injuries, but in this case it’s also a huge portion of bad luck. She missed the ball and with force like that, you are likely to injure yourself when you hit air like that. I can’t imagine the difficulty going through something like this. Having to motive yourself when your whole body, your vessel that provides you with so much, fails you like that.

I hope we get Debinha and Marta to join in January. Debinha would certainly fill a good part of the Viv/Meado gap while Marta will be looking to play into World Cup form and could be very useful.

Daveo

Both world class strikers with the same injury within the weeks. And as someone who has done this… This is shite! Good news is this is great surgery and there usually stent lingering problems anymore after full recovery (6-12 months)

Poor, poor Viv. Unwell for the Euros and now missing the World Cup.
I don’t know what we’re going to do without her at AWFC.

Get well soon, Viv! This is devastating, so soon after Meado’s injury. Come back stronger.

Merlin’s Panini

Brutal. Considering this was her extended year it would be such a shame for someone who is, to many, a club legend to have that be her final game. I hope, if she wants it, she gets another year.
Here’s hoping for a full and speedy recovery from one of the worst injuries you can get as a footballer.

Dirk

All the best with the recovery
