Arsenal Women confirm signing of Canada goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo

Arsenal Women have confirmed the signing of Canadian international goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo from Vittsjo in Sweden. The 29-year-old has spent the last three years in Sweden having previously played for North Carolina Courage and Western New York Flash.

D’Angelo has 12 caps for Canada and was a bronze medalist with her country at the 2016 Olympics, she was also part of their 2019 World Cup squad.

D’Angelo will come to provide competition to firm first-choice Manu Zinsberger, whose contract expires in the summer. She won the National Women’s Soccer League crown in 2016, before moving in 2017 to North Carolina Courage, where she won consecutive NWSL Shields in 2017 and 2018 in addition to her second NWSL title in 2018.

“It feels amazing – it’s an honour to be here and I’m so excited to get started with the team,” said Sabrina. “This is an incredibly exciting time for Arsenal Women and I want to help the team to win trophies and achieve success for our wonderful supporters.”

Head Coach Jonas Eidevall added: “We’re delighted to have signed Sabrina. She is a top goalkeeper with plenty of experience in both Europe and North America and we’re confident that she will be a strong addition to our squad.”

Head of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley said: “Sabrina is an excellent goalkeeper and a great character so we are very pleased to have brought her to Arsenal. She has a proven track record with experience at both club and international level and we look forward to seeing her in action soon.”

I hope Manu stays but this seems like we are planning for life without her.

Salvador Berzunza

and is the smartest way, I reckon.

Looks like a positive signing and provides good competition to Zinsberger, who I’m not sure about. Great shot stopper, not so great on crosses….

What does this mean for Kaylan?

Matt

Very good question. It’s hard to see all 3 of our current goalkeepers being at the club at the start of next season.

Chapeau

I wondered too and thought it seemed strange he wasn’t mentioned at all in the article. But it seems Manu may be the one quietly slipping out the picture.

Loago

can’t wait for Sabrinacast

Gary

Eidevall is such a confused man.
What’s the point of adding another GK when we obviously need to strengthen other areas of the squad?
This man should be sacked if we are serious about winning any trophy this season.
His poor decisions keeps on drawing us backwards.
Hand this fine team over to a coach like Emma Hayes, and watch us become a big threat in Europe…

Tim Stillman

The fact that Zinsberger’s contract is up in the summer and D’Angelo’s most recent contract expired in November meant the deal had to happen now or not at all. Arsenal have also brought in three players, have called one back from loan and are adding one more. I think four outfield players in a window is quite a lot!

Tim Stillman

Three outfield players, that is. It will be four by the end of the window and they’re all attacking players.

2 of the signings this window are young as well. If we can develop and keep them it could yield dividends over many seasons

Jamie Ryan

Yes, sack the manager of a team near the top of the league and progressing in Europe.

Peter Story Teller

Looks to me like Manu has had a quiet word and told Jonas she’ll not be staying after the summer. Two new keepers in a matter of months and we still have a “young prospect” out on loan who cannot even buy her way into a game it seems!

Fun Gunner

Good age. I hope we get to actually see her.

If Sabrina is in to replace Manu I think that’s a great move, to my mind, Manu has always been a bit on the suspect side. Manu has improved since first appearing but she’s still prone to errors that should not happen.
