Jonas Eidevall reverts to back four for Arsenal against Chelsea Women

Jonas Eidevall will start with Rafaelle, Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord, despite the fact that trio played in a different continent on Wednesday.

Manu Zinsberger starts in goal with Sabrina D’Angelo injured, Laura Wienroither, Leah Williamson, Rafaelle and Steph Catley complete the defensive line-up.

Lia Walti, Kim Little and Frida Maanum start in midfield as the Gunners revert to their usual 4231 line-up after two games against Manchester City with a back three. Katie McCabe and Caitlin Foord will flank Stina Blackstenius upfront.

Lina Hurtig misses out with injury, as do Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema.

I don’t rate Jonas as a coach. The team’s apparent success is largely momentum from Joe’s era, individual talent and industry from 3 or 4 players, psychological advantage over lesser teams and team dynamics. Jonas’ tactics are either unclear or ineffective.

As team composition changes, Arsenal women will become progressively average to mirror the level of their coach unless someone wakes up and fires him in good time.

And once again being comfortably beaten. Playing Chelsea is like groundhog day 🙁
I wonder what *technical* excuse we will get from Jonas this time 🤔

Other than not have Miedema and Mead? Because that’s the excuse the BBC have given him all game. Fact is Blackstenius and Hurtig are not good enough to be playing for Arsenal and Jonas doesn’t seem to have tactics, the team play the same way every game even when better teams it doesn’t work. I’m sure fans will once again pull out the Lyon result back when half their squad was missing but other than that one game Arsenal have been boring and predictable to watch.

When is Jonas going to wake up and get this team working? Quality players but terrible results against Chelsea. How much time can he be allowed to waste the players? We’ll lose 5 this summer as they leave out of contract wanting to win something and know they can’t do it with Arsenal under Jonas Eidvall.

We’re just never going to score another goal, are we?

Gunner4life

We had more possession, more shots on target and more chances created but still looked like we’d never get the ball in the back of the net. Jonas can pull the ‘small margins’ talk back out of his pocket but the team look like they didn’t care. I’ve seen a lot of these players have better performances for their NT’s than they did today. It’s not good enough and it has to be something in house at Arsenal. We saw the team split under Joe with half wanting him gone and the others wanting him to stay. I do wonder… Read more »

Yeah, they can’t keep using missing Viv and Beth as an excuse because we were still regularly beaten by Chelsea even before they were injured. It’s just ridiculous now, like a mental block, almost as if the ladies accept they won’t beat Chelsea. And that is daft, they are good players. more than capable of walloping Chelsea (as they did in the title-winning season) yet it’s almost like a foregone conclusion now when they play that Chelsea will win. And we have to play them again in the Conti cup final! C’mon Jonas, you need to fire this team up… Read more »

I haven’t heard one single excuse given by JE regarding absence of the Meadema duo. I agree with other comments that maybe HT was the time to be extra bold and throw on at least two of the youthful foursome with the others at 60 minutes to really go for a win

I’m so sick of Jonas and his lame excuses. He has been given enough time to implement his tactics and preferred way of playing and we still get beat by Chelsea yet again. We just miss chance upon chance. How can we win football matches when we can’t put the ball at the back of the net?

Fun Gunner

The thing is, we could have won that game 4-3. They weren’t tearing us apart, they were just a lot more efficient. We seem to have reverted to the weaknesses we had under Montemurro – low intensity, passive, one-paced – and the weakness of JE’s style – not taking care of the ball. Without the positive aspects of either style. Frida Maanum is taking/has been given too much responsibility. Laudable, but she shouldn’t be trying to score with weak shots from miles out. And let someone else take free kicks and corners sometimes. Stina’s confidence is shot. Again, you have… Read more »
