Report: Swansea to sign Charlie Patino on loan

According to Fabrizio Romano, Charlie Patino is on the verge of joining Swansea on a season-long loan.

The news comes as something of a surprise after The Athletic reported in May that Arsenal would be open to selling the 19-year-old should a suitable offer be forthcoming.

It’s unclear whether the decision to loan the midfielder for a second consecutive season means the club have changed their mind or if interested parties haven’t been able to stump up the necessary cash.

Hailed as one of Arsenal’s most-promising academy talents prior to his senior debut, Patino didn’t waste time making a strong first impression on fans when he came off the bench to score in the 5-1 League Cup win over Sunderland in December 2021.

He went on to start the FA Cup third round defeat to Nottingham Forest the following month but hasn’t featured since.

Last season, Patino made 36 appearances in all competitions for Blackpool – scoring three goals and providing four assists – but wasn’t able to prevent their relegation to League One.

A move to Swansea marks a return to the Championship and another chance to impress potential suitors. He remains under contract at Emirates Stadium until 2025.

I thought he did quite well on loan (anyone know from regular Blackpool fans); surprised a championship club didn’t come in for him

Bobbyp

Swansea are in the Championship!

Johnny 4 Hats

Yeah, I’m surprised too. But I quite like this.

If Elneny and Jorginho leave next summer as expected and Patino shines at Swansea, he can fight for a place at Arenal in 2024.

Best of luck Charlie. I bet the Swansea fans absolutely love him.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

Why not Nice, Brest Le Havre, Lens in Ligue 1?

I wouldn’t say no to Nice Brest.

Johnny 4 Hats

Nice breasts?

Yeah. I would’ve gone on loan there for defo.

Johnny 4 Hats

Great minds NAM.

And on exactly the same minute!

We’re just dogs.

Nice Brest Le Havre is a great name for an adult film star though.

Luton Gooner

I’m confused by this comment…Swansea are in the Championship. Or did you mean surprised not more Championship clubs were in for him?

Johnny 4 Hats

I think he meant on a permanent deal.

But yeah, I had to check as I thought there was a chance the swans had been relegated to league one.

NotSince61

Yes not more championship clubs were willing to buy him. There’s been very little interest it seems

Spanish Gooner

Pure speculation on my part but I’d guess Patino will have only wanted a permanent move to a lower Prem club (or La Liga equivalent) and nobody has come in for him.

Dropping down a league on a 4/5 year deal would be a huge risk for his career (Kristian Bielik for example), and in 2024 “20 y/o Arsenal player with two years Championship experience and one year on his contract” sounds a lot better than for e.g. “20 y/o West Brom first team player with 4 years remaining”

baz00r

Is he EPL quality at the moment? I doubt he will get minutes in a lower EPL team struggling to fight relegation.

Spanish Gooner

If he’s good enough to get first XI Championship minutes he’s good enough to get sub / cup minutes for somebody like Forest, but they probably won’t give that opportunity to a player they don’t own outright at the expense of their own youth graduates.

baz00r

Defeats the purpose though, we are loaning him out to give her more minutes, not to be a 85th minute sub, he can get that at Arsenal.

Kris

Not sure the issue for Bielik was moving down a division, more the 2 ACL injuries he sustained at Derby. Still only 25 and playing regularly for Poland though, wouldn’t rule out the prem in the next few years.

BsinGooner

Wish him all the best!

ClockEnder

“2003 born talent”

Smart way to keep Arsenal fans from getting into a heated debate!

D.J.

Yeah, but when was he conceived?

Spanish Gooner

I think signing Havertz is a real positive for Patino. There’s going to be a place in the squad for a 6ft left-footed technician every single game, which is exactly what Patino is. If he blows up the championship I can really see him being second choice left 8 from next season

Chuckles

Hmm. I would not have guessed he was 6’. Good size in this league for a CM. Hope he comes back, wins a place and makes proud. Up the academy!!

Heavenly Chapecoense

Season starting, yes sir! This is the time I always staunchly believe we will win everything: the league, the FA Cup, a european competition until one is gone and we are out of two other competitions in one week. All that is Arsenal and fun (including complaining about the annual end-of-season collapse). Say what you want, this is the experience I have passion for.

I really hope we win the League Cup this season. 31 years of hurt.

dr Strange

Patino should go to Cardiff and team up with Ramsey. He would learn a lot from him and make a good team in CM.

Nainsley Aitland Miles

According to Ornstein, Aaron Ramsey has tonight signed for Burnley for £14m!

(He wrote Aaron instead of Jacob).

GoonerRon

It is Aaron Ramsey, just a different one to our old player.

Nainsley Aitland Miles

My mistake, you’re absolutely spot on.

A Different George

He’s Jacob’s brother.

Arsemouth

This is great! If he proves himself, there’s certainly space for him at CM given that Partey, Jorginho and Elneny (maybe all 3) are likely to move in the coming seasons.

BigKiwi

Can we agree that Arteta doesn’t do youth development?

bob

We have one of the youngest squads in the league and have improved year after year, so no, we can’t agree on that.

Wanyama IV

Bukayo Saka.

Don’t see the need to explain myself

BigKiwi

Saka made first team debut before Arteta took over. Happy to hear which other young Arsenal academy products have been brought through by Arteta.

Gunner1971

Give me strength. On the one hand I see Arsenal fans crying about our standards and how Arteta should have us winning all the big trophies against the behemoths out there otherwise he should get the sack, on the other hand you want him to bring through loads of academy players. Youth development is only one factor for academy players, the major one is TALENT.

Wanyama IV

He doesn’t become the monster RW he is at the moment without Arteta.

That’s not debatable

Wanyama IV

English might not be my first language, but,if we’re talking “youth development”, then I’d have a credible argument to make that you’ve spent the last three years with your head stuck in the sand tbh.

Gunner1971

Also go and read interviews of young Arsenal players and Man City stars when they were young and what they think of Arteta’s influence on their development.
