Arteta crowned Manager of the Month, dismisses curse talk

Mikel Arteta has been crowned the Premier League’s Manager of the Month for February after leading Arsenal to four successive victories against Liverpool, West Ham, Burnley and Newcastle.

The Gunners netted 18 goals and conceded just twice as they reignited their title challenge to close the gap on rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Arteta’s side have since bagged another six-goal haul against Sheffield United and will be looking to stretch their winning run to eight matches in the league when Brentford visit the Emirates on Saturday.

“It’s a great honour obviously in this league to get recognised that way,” said Arteta in Thursday’s press conference.

“Thank you very much to the team and the staff, they are always supporting and making us better.”

He also joked that having already bagged a victory in March, and many others in the aftermath of other similar successes, any talk of the gong being cursed has been put to bed.

“I won it [the award] and then we won many games, so that superstition is gone,” he said.

This is the seventh time the Spaniard has won the award since taking the hot seat at the Emirates in December 2019.

Remarkably, only seven managers have won more monthly awards since the Premier League began in 1992, not bad for a guy whose coaching career is just getting going.

Congrats to the boss, well deserved.

But just like that again, Saka has been cheated after having a barnstorming month! The level of disrespect I see fans of other clubs according him with st*pid comparisons and downplaying his goals are honestly baffling.

RamsdaleMyHero

Agreed Saka deserved the award more than anyone else including MA.

Jeremy

Honestly these people are morons. Scientifically stupid. You can hear the one cog slowly grinding in their brain as they talk. They don’t like arsenal (or they are racist Chelsea fans) so they dismiss his quality. Fine by me. Makes it funnier when he rips their team to shreds and they have an online meltdown.

Geefive

The multiple usage of the term “bagged”, compounded with that picture….I don’t know man.

Mayor McCheese

They were firm favorites for the award.

Mkh

It was hard not to hand them the big-sized award, given how tightly focused they are.

No need to ask does sir dress on the left…

I think it goes under the radar that this is Arteta’s first managerial job. What did Mourinho, Conte, Klop, etc do in their first four seasons as professional managers? Zidane was incredible as a new manager but what Arteta is doing represents incredible talent in job. To bring this team to the level they’re playing at after clearing out the rot left by Wenger represents remarkable progress. A second title this season for Arteta’s will confirm his skill. What he’s doing is excellent at any stage of a managerial career but creating a system that has matured into this phase… Read more »

To be fair Mourinho did win some big trophies with Porto in his first 4 years. Though to be really fair Mourinho is also a complete hack who mostly relied on his sleazy charm and political manoeuvring to become in charge of teams with a lot of talent and/or resources, and then got said talent to win games for him with very basic defensive tactics, no recognisable attacking system and sheer luck. Which somehow worked… until it didnt. Because the luck ran out, and suddenly the only thing special about him is how especially depressed fans become when he manages… Read more »

Maureen Ho has always been an “Impact Manager”, a few quick results but never builds anything.

Ebo

That too! But my point was even that impact you mention relied mostly on things that have little to do with football, and the ones that did represent football at its absolute worst

Naked Cygan

Saka or any of the Arsenal players should have won the POTM for Feb. Absolutely joke to give it to the clowns at United.

Daveo

Seriously…bunch of fuckwits!
Saka 6 goals (=most by an Arsenal player in a calendar month ever), 2 assists in 5 games.
But, sure give it to Hojlund with 5 goals and 1 assist…
Fuckwits!

Arteta is gonna be some Wizard of a Manager. Man was just made to coach. You can see the passion and most importantly the intelligence

BillyKrystal

Congrats, I hope he enjoys his jumbo pringles.

A Different George

I think it might be a case of blank cd’s. Way better than the box of VCR tapes the manager of the month used to get.

TeeCee

It’s a bottle of Premier League branded plonk.

Spanner

Wenger’s best ever signing?

Ebo

Other than the best player who ever played for this club? Sure, I can see it happening. A trophy or two would be nice though before we put him concretely in front of Vieira, Campbell, Pires and co.

Doghouse

Not a great believer in gongs, some over privileged twats making their meaningless assumptions to foster their importance to award a nothingness, I’m sure our neighbours would greatly greet this award and would proudly show it in their barren trophy cabinet, like the one in Harry Kane’s House, Miki and the team around him have done well to turned the disappointing Xmas results and our form has been outstanding lately but this is the time we are truly judged, we let it slipped last season given an injury or two and not having the nerve to see it through, but… Read more »
