Havertz: Mentality helped us find the late winner

Kai Havertz spoke to Sky Sports after his late winner earned Arsenal three points in a 2-1 win over Brentford this evening.

Here’s what he had to say:

How big is this win?

Yeah, hello first of all. Yeah, massive, massive win for us. You know, we were so desperate to get these three points and they were so important to us. And I think you could see that, especially in the second half. We came in at half-time and we wanted to turn it around, we didn’t play our best first half but I think to win it that way is maybe sometimes even better.

Putting pressure on Liverpool and Man City …

Yeah, obviously it always feels nice to have three points in the bag. To be honest, I think we talked a lot about this as well in the dressing room. We just try to focus on ourselves, try to win our games because we cannot change what the other teams are doing. I think today was huge for us, 100 percent, but we tried to focus on us and now we go into the next competition again during the week and we’re looking forward to that one, and I hope it’s going to be another special night for us.

How was the dressing room at half-time?

Yeah, not nice, obviously, especially when you concede so close to the whistle. But I think we all spoke a lot to each other and we wanted to turn it around. I think they didn’t deserve to get the goal, but sometimes mistakes are part of the game. I did also a couple of mistakes that maybe lead to a goal. We are all together in there and we wanted to turn it around, we spoke to each other. I think we showed a good mentality from the first second half. We wanted to turn it around and at the end so close to the final whistle, we did it.

Another winner against Brentford …

Yeah, it’s good. Obviously the first game against them this season was also very special to me. Today may be nicer to score the score in front of the home fans. I’m glad I have the team and we are so happy to have these three points now.

What do you think is your best position?

I don’t know how many times I’ve answered this question already. I think it’s the same answer as always. I am happy to be on the pitch. I think I’m not a player who can only play on one position. Sometimes this is good, sometimes this is bad. I think it suits me quite well. I like to be anywhere all around the pitch. The last couple of games I played as a false nine. I love it in this team. I love it to play on the number eight, on the number 10, wherever you want me to go. In Germany I played as a left-back as well, so it’s all good.

A big week coming up with Porto on Tuesday.

Definitely. And I think this is the final part of the season. And, you know, we worked so hard to get into these games and actually pay for something. So, yeah, we worked so hard the whole year to get these games. And now on Tuesday to play these kind of games on such special occasions is huge for all of us. But we definitely go in there and want to turn it around and want to win this game. Then we have a break and then there’s another big game coming. I think we just need everyone now and everyone has to stick together because these weeks are very important to us.

Porto the next victim.. off you go again King Kai…. COYG…

He’s got no hair but we don’t care...

I ❤️Havertz and am happy to eat the biggest slice of humble pie.
I also ❤️ Ramsdale. What character! What saves after the error. The pat on the badge at the end was straight from his heart.
COYG!!!

Well said! 👏

We have so many brilliant players but Kai Havertz is probably our most important player ! He must be a nightmare to play against when has that Arsenal shirt on ! Was always told a footballer is judged on three things : what you do when you have the ball – what you do when your teammate has the ball – what you do when you haven’t got the ball
With Mr Havertz it’s easy to see that he excels in those 3 things !! 👏👏

Hopefulgunner

3 things = the game of football. lol

Go coach youth 👏

Wengerball

His Chelsea nightmare finally looks to be past him now. We’re seeing that Bundesliga Havertz everyone was raving about a few years ago.

That entire club has been a nightmare of its own creation for three seasons now. No wonder he stumbled out of there shell shocked.

Wengerball

Literally had some PTSD

Dr. Gooner

Well, we’re not seeing THAT Havertz because that Haverz played on the RW and was roasting people off the dribble, cutting inside on his left to score goals, like Bukayo Saka. He’s never going to be that Havertz again because he grew about 6″ since then and his body doesn’t move the same way anymore, center of gravity is now too high for that level of lateral agility. BUT what we are getting is a player with an incredibly rare blend of traits. Elite technique. Left footer. Elite size and aerial ability. Durability. Combativeness. Work ethic. Intelligence. Multiversity. Adaptability. No… Read more »

It’s as if he died and was reassembled into Robokai! Half man, half machine = 100% footballer!

Teryima Adi

Kai is the Man not Becky Lynch.😀

Greg in Seattle

And he’s a polite lad, also. “Yeah, hello first of all.” Deflecting from Ramsdale because outfield players make crucial mistakes also, just further from goal so the correlation is hazier, was a really nice touch. They’d been raving about him as a person even when he was struggling, and you can see why.

Scrubbychubby

Yeah, I noticed that. Seems a genuinely down to earth guy – a million miles from the modern footballer cliche.

Cliff Bastin

This is not a complaint but footballers say “obviously” a lot.

Michael

Not quite a waste of money now is he? All he needed was time but a noisy and unfair minority refused to show any patience. Well done Kai.
