Arsenal announce Cozier-Duberry and Walters departures

Arsenal have announced the departures of defender Reuell Walters and forward Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Walters joined the Gunners Academy having spent some unfortunate years with Sp*rs, and although he made the bench on a number of occasions, he never got to make his full debut for the club.

Similarly, Cozier-Duberry featured as a potential substitute for a couple of EFL Cup and Champions League games, but leaves without having featured for the first team in a competitive fixture.

We wish them the best of luck wherever they end up next.

Not once has Arteta started a teenager in the prem. even when we were finishing 8th and potless.
There is no incentive for them at Arsenal

Alex Elkin

Don’t think that’s true. Saka was a teenager starting under Arteta. Martinelli also played in the prem as a teenager under Arteta, but not sure if he started while still a teen in prem or only in cup/Europa games. The bar is higher now, and unfortunately every gane counts against 115fc. That said, I think Nwaneri will get there, though maybe not for another year or two for a start.

Only here to see Eboue

You’re missing the point. Saka and Martinelli were still teenagers, but they were already established first team players by the time Arteta arrived. It was Unai that gave them a chance and handed them their big break, same with ESR. Arteta is yet to do that with a single youngster and it’s undoubtedly the reason why so many top talents are choosing to leave. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s justified or not, the facts are the facts.

Eric Blair

We already have one of the youngest teams in the league, and in order to overhaul 115fc you want our team to get even younger?

ALBangbang

When should he have started them? What games was it ok to throw in some untested teenagers in for? We haven’t even had conducive cup draws in the last few years to start them in. Let alone the prem.

Modha

This, as sad as it is, players are let go by clubs ALL the time. I trust Edu and Arteta. If they offered contracts, they offered them at the value they believe the players are worth. I can’t believe that people have seen the progress we’ve made under their stewardship and are still critical. We were able to play youth in the past because we couldn’t AFFORD to sign players. The stadium stymied us. We now have money and are more successful, and I don’t think throwing on Ruell Walters for 5 mins at the end of a game is… Read more »

Leemillion

I don’t think it’s unfair to be critical considering we are terrible at selling. Look at the values Chelsea have just gotten for 3 young players, including one they got from us for nothing and didn’t even play.

The others are almost definitely bending the rules. Maybe the guys at Chelsea, Liverpool etc. are absolute negotiating geniuses relative to our guys. More likely it’s nonsense like this — https://shorturl.at/Oj7dh (Yahoo Sports: “Premier League issue warning to clubs over exploiting ‘PSR loophole’ in transfer deals”).

Leemillion

Some, yes.
Omari, Lewis Hall, Maatsen I don’t think are.
Omari did well at Ipswich, Hall was wanted by Newcastle and played on loan there and Maatsen is a CL finalist.

thw14

Our guys have also put up numbers, and don’t seem to draw these insane bids. I don’t buy that our team is less intelligent than any assembled by Todd Boehly, who would lose a negotiation to a well-trained cockatoo. There is massive fraud going on with these ‘valuations’ and our choice is to either play the game or push back against it.

Bobbert

Given the clubs involved in these deals (and that 2 of them are in part owned by the same person), I’d say this is undoubtedly fraud.

So you’d rather have had Cedric come on in the 85th minute of a dead rubber Carling cup game?? Because that’s what what was happening

Dr. Gooner

Yes I personally would rather give those minutes to Cedric, who deserved them more on merit and had a chance to win a medal with us as a result.

The Beast

1) Not actually true.
2) Have we gotten to the point where there’s so little to complain about that some of us are nostalgic for the days our squad was so shit we relied on teenagers to play a major part in the 1st team?

Eric Blair

Hutchinson left us for Chelsea, how many starts did they give him? Now he’s leaving them. I don’t think your point stands up to scrutiny.

Dr. Gooner

He had a really good season at Ipswich who secured promotion and can thus afford him. It just worked out really well for them.

Howard

Well, they like buying youth players like Viera for 35m from Mendes ( Edu’s friend) without giving their own youth players chances even when we are leading in many goals, 5, 6 etc. Arteta preferred to bring on ‘washed’ out El Neny and Cedric rather than Reuel and Ethan. Word on the street now is ” you have no chance as a youth at Arsenal” Chelsea has done great. They got Omari and are selling him for 22m and Arsenal will get peanut from the sale. They gave Auba for free and Barca sold him back to Chelsea for 12m.… Read more »

A different George

I think the mess Edu has made in buying and Arteta in managing are the probably explanations for why Arsenal have played so poorly the past two seasons.

allezkev

Couldn’t agree more, it’s a shambles, imagine any manager being foolish enough to focus on challenging for the title rather than giving debuts to 18 and 19 year olds?

The Beast

Chelsea have done great. Not like that other west London club that spunked over a billion in 2 seasons to maintain their mid-table spot. What were their names again?

Leemillion

We really need to get on top of these things. I don’t think it’s on Arteta to play them, it’s on Edu to secure them and loan them out. Then we sell up or integrate into the first team. It’s such a concern.

TheLimpBar

You can’t keep all your youth players. Just a fact of life

Greg in Seattle

Agree. Nor should you make empty promises about playing time when we are not in a place to provide it, as we want to compete for all cups. See: Reiss Nelson

Nwaneri is clearly the only one they rate as something special, and I’m ok with accepting that fact. Keep looking for the gems like Martinelli in the meanwhile.

Sam

Would these players have become top players at Arsenal? Probably not. Top players would have broken through by that age. However, I feel like it could be a repeat of the Omari Hutchinson situation. Giving them a few minutes here or there would have kept them happy and developed them, then we could have sold them for decent money later

Bobbert

A fair number of these players listen to agents and family and find out the grass isn’t always greener.

He’s got no hair but we don’t care...

Saddened more by Cozier-Duberry going. What will be interesting is to see whether they go somewhere disgusting like Chelsea. That will raise obvious questions.

Bobbert

To people crying about arteta’s mismanagement of youth players, I would remind you all that it is partly the responsibility of the player to force themselves into contention through performances at youth level and during training with the first team.

Dr. Gooner

If they are good enough, they will play. It’s mostly that the academy hasn’t produced any real talent since Saka. Nwaneri is next and Arteta already gave him his debut last season when he wasn’t even 16 yet.

Ziich

Seeing as teenagers in market are going for 30-40 million with no senior appearances for their parents team, seeing young players with potential leave for nothing hurts a little

Dr. Gooner

Newcastle, Chelsea and Villa are selling players to each other just to stay within FFP regulations and for future favors. It’s all very inbred and disgusting. The deals don’t reflect fair market value at all but rather they are vehicles for financial manipulation to stay compliant with the rules. You buy my 18 year old for 25 million, I buy yours for the same, and we can both post a big profit. It’s simple exploitation of loopholes for existing rules.

Dr. Gooner

The anger is misplaced. A manager will play a youngster if he’s good enough, but only the top 1% at best will make that cut, even less at a world top 5 club. An academy at such a club however should produce a consistent stream of top flight ready talent, which Hale End hasn’t done. We get the odd gem ever 10 years or so but that’s not enough. It’s not on Arteta to pay kids who aren’t ready. It’s on the academy to manufacture more talent that is ready, and to sell them at the right time so we… Read more »
