Joel Campbell looks set to extend his stay at Real Betis with the Spanish club confident Arsenal will sanction another loan for the Costa Rican international.
While far from prolific for the Verdiblancos last season his 25 starts and 8 appearances off the bench saw him become a staple of Pepe Mel’s first team squad.
“Campbell is almost certainly at Betis [next season],” Mel told Marca TV yesterday when asked if another deal was close.
Without a work permit the 20-year-old remains unable to play in the UK so another deal with Betis makes perfect sense. That being said, for all the experience he’s gaining it does look as though he’s in danger of being perma-loaned in Spain like Wellington and the now departed Pedro Botelho.
With Yaya Sanogo, also 20, being tipped to challenge for a first team squad you can’t help but wonder whether Campbell will ever get his chance at the Emirates.
In further loan-related news, Crewe Alexandra have underlined their eagerness to sign Chuks Aneke on another temporary deal.
The England under-19 international scored six goals and made five assists during a very fruitful spell with the Railwaymen last term and has, along with Newcastle’s Brad Inmen, another offer on the table.
“The situation is on-going with Brad and Chuks,” Crewe boss Steve Davis told the club’s official website.
“I spoke to them both before they went away and have spoken with their agents as well. I have made my feelings clear about them both; we would like to bring them here.
“They were both outstanding for us last season and made big impacts. I’m sure people will have taken notice about how well they did for us last season.”

He needs 3 years in Europe to qualify for a citizenship, I think, so that could be part of it too.

Non-EU citizens still need to get work permits from individual countries.

Our first team squad had 24 players. Now it is minus Squillaci and Arshavin. That’s 21 players plus Diaby. With just three centrebacks (BFG, Kos, TV5) it’s obvious another is going to arrive. JD20 is unlikely to slot back in or even stay. With multiple weaknesses in midfield (numbers, injuries, age) … again we could see two new players here. And with all the talk about Villa (last year and this), Jovetic, etc., I’d expect an established new forward arrival in addition to Sanogo. If Sagna gets a new contract (or if he just stays, I guess) then I don’t think we’ll see another CB coming in, Miquel and Sagna will be back-up imo.
I agree with pre-season being important for a few youngsters, I think there’s a spot to compete for, unless we bring in two big attacking names, which is unlikely.

That’s 8 players for 3 positions. I’d say one more BIG signing there would be more than enough and that CB and another out and out striker would be what we need to focus on.
The one rumour that I really like is Paul Pogba … someone who I think could well be as good as Patrick.
But since I worry at bit, there are other factors that might concern me over a season.
Jack’s ankle, Arteta’s age, Rosicky’s availability, Ramsey’s form, Alex’s consistency, Coquelin’s class, Diaby’s recovery.
Clement Grenier is another player I like. Who’d be ideal as an understudy to Rosicky or even Santi. But, like with most players these days, consistency is the key. And Grenier is just 22.
Not exactly relevant here but I’d love to see Eisfeld given a game or two. He’s played for us once and he looked great, I know injuries kept it at 1 in the League Cup but I think the guy deserves a chance.

I think paying Squilacci and co for nothing have been a bigger waste of money, I doubt that Campbell had cost too much overall. We could at least use the Squid if we wanted to, not that we did. But here we have a player thats worth nothing to us and he might not have world class wages but I doubt Betis are paying them and there were a couple of other teams interested in him when we signed him so he will make decent money (whatever decent means in football). In my opinion, the plan was probably always:
Plan A) Try and get a work permit in the U.K. or
Plan B) Having failed that, loan them out.
I doubt there’s much going wrong. The permit application process is not fully predictable and there’s always a chance it will fail. But you can’t scupper a deal for a player you’re interested in just because the permit process might fail, especially when there is a readily available Plan B.

am i the only person who feels wages should be dramaticly lowered and bonuses dramaticly increased, i.e drop basic wages by 20k a week for over 50k a week players and add a 10k a week bonus to this wage after a set number of assists/ goals/ ‘good games’ and another 10k after this initial number is doubled, certainly help us save money on the out of form, and provoke players to play better

So everybody is assuming that his development stopped when he went to Real Betis? I doubt that very much. We are not the only club capable of training players, and I doubt he was placed with Real Betis by lottery or a random pin in a map.
I still have fairly high hopes for this kid… He has scored some truly gorgeous goals in his career. Hopefully I speak for most of us wishing him the best of luck for next year… wherever he ends up.

Yes a million is nothing when he is a regular in the spanish top flight when considering his resale value. He is young and progressing meaning his value is appreciating. You can only say that he has been a waste of money if we do not recuperate the money spent on him during his contract. If you break even on the player he has not been a waste of money. He is an investment.
My understanding is that we expected to get a permit when we signed him, as he was already an international but the application was denied. If he spends one more year in Spain, he will qualify for Spanish nationality and then won’t need a permit to play in England. I think he looks like a good prospect and I hope we see him in an Arsenal shirt one day.

I was disappointed with the Chavski pic, as it features players covered in some sort of blue shit. Unfortunately they don’t have John Terry in there and I hate to miss out on seeing John Terry covered in any sort of shit.
The Home shirt looks far more reminiscent of a United shirt than a liverpool shirt with those collar/cuff stripes. That will hurt if we are kind enough to keep pointing it out to them through the season.

Campbell is a future wing in the making, but one who can cut inside and also finish. He’s fast like Miyaichi, but he’s also got better technique.
