In the spotlight that surrounds the signing of Mesut Özil, our poor new goalkeeper is hardly getting a look in.
Perhaps that’s normal, perhaps it’s because he looks like Manuel Almunia’s long lost brother, but Emiliano Viviano is now a Gooner and he’s glad to be here.
The former Palermo and Fiorentina man said it was an easy choice to come to Arsenal once he knew we were interested, and that he’s looking forward to competing for a place in the team with Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski.
Speaking to the official site, he said, “I am proud to be here and I want to say thank you to the boss. It feels good, it is a dream for me.
“It is easy to choose Arsenal, it is one of the best clubs in the world. It is a club with a fantastic story, with a boss who is one of the best in Europe and for me it is a dream.”
Ostensibly signed as back-up for both Szczesny and Fabianski, Viviano hopes to bring some competition to the squad and to play a part in Arsenal’s season.
“I think it is a good thing that there are other great goalkeepers here. It is a positive fight. We are at work every day together and I am sure there will be great friendship.
“I know Fabianski has been a little bit unlucky last year with some injuries. I always see Szczesny play and he is a good goalkeeper, a great goalkeeper. I will work hard with them.”
He seems like a nice chap, trying his best to speak English in the full interview which you can watch right here. Any competition is good competition, so let’s hope this works out.

I like the look of him, and I like how he wanted to speak English, to connect better with the fans.
I was going to say that the fact he is confident enough to speak English means he must be a confident goalkeeper, but perhaps I’m reading too much into this.
