Arsene Wenger says that sticking with a back four is a possibility as he continues to try and get his team to be more efficient up front.
Taking a man out of the defence and using a replacement further forward should make us more dangerous, but as yesterday’s 1-0 win over Newcastle demonstrated, there’s still work to be done in that regard.
Asked about the formation, and whether he’d stay with what is his preferred set-up at the back, the manager told the official site, “It’s possible, yes.
“I think we were mobile at the back, built the game up well and it gives us one more player to go forward.
“When you don’t score as much as you want, sometimes you look at every single thing and that is why I went for it.”
The Gunners had 23 attempts but only one one goal to show for it. What a goal it was too, and Wenger admitted his relief as his team hung on to take the win.
“I knew before the game that this is a tricky one because we play three games in six days and that we have not rotated a lot,” he said.
“So I thought it could be a tricky one, but as well the three points tonight are a relief for the team and overall we deserved it.”
does anyone notice Wenger that with three at the back and fluent options forward Arsenal created almost twice as clear cut chances as with back four? obviously not, this is just pure bullshit
We need that efficiency, if we had even a fraction of other teams (eg Burnley) we would be a lot closer to the top. I say keep the back four.
Burnley is clearly getting lucky. They will regress to the mean soon.
going on about ozil,s goal wont hide the fact that we are so shit, the players just don’t have a clue, just how wenger wants them to play, he cant make his mind up, he has lost the plot, back three back four, players out of position, he should just GO NOW don’t wait till the end of the season, forget top four, we wont get there, we should be looking over our shoulders not forward
After 10+ years of this kind of comment demanding Wenger go now, and 10+ years of Wenger saying he always honors his contract, I think the writing is on the wall.
We might be a lot of things, but Sp*rs we aren’t
Wenger can’t take us forward. Period. And how does top 4 matter anyway.. it has come down to enjoying the good games, and not caring about the bad ones..
I think this is this truth I didn’t realize I believed.
Does that mean we might see Walcott in the league again?thumbs up if you miss him
I miss Walcott like I miss getting strep throat.
In 4-2-3-1 yes, he should be brought back into contention. Better finisher than Danny, who’s struggling at the moment.
Theo’s very efficient in that right wing role. Still a frustrating player who has a tendency to go missing, but he’ll rack up the goals and assists.
Sanchez on the left is also a bit of a bummer. Outstanding player, but with his constant cutting back and dribbling across the edge of the box it totally takes the fluency out of our attacks. So many of our counters and quick breaks just die as soon as the ball gets to him.
Danny has been struggling to score all his career long. Van Gaal made it clear he was sold for that reason. We cannot afford having wingers who do not score. Iwobi doesn’t score, Welbeck almost never scores, Ozil isn’t prolific, even Ramsey isn’t prolific.
Welbeck and Iwobi are not wingers. Welbeck is a forward who is deployed wide in our system, but I think he would do better in a traditional second striker role off a CF. Iwobi is an attacking midfielder who is deployed wide as we seek to include him in a side that also includes Ozil in the ‘number ten’ role.
I’d make the argument that since Arshavin left, we haven’t had a traditional winger in the side. Theo Walcott is close, but not a true winger either.
Andrei Arshavin was never a traditional winger pal. Number 10/ playmaker
Walcott is still around- we’ve just chosen to deploy him in a new role: as coffee lady.
We had over 100 shoots in last 4 premier league game and scored 3 goal.
