Iwobi: A decent result but it was tough after Welbz injury

Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Sporting may have seen us extend our unbeaten run to 15 games and secure qualification to the knockout rounds of the Europa League but a drab game at the Emirates was overshadowed by a serious injury to Danny Welbeck.

The England international appears to have badly damaged his ankle and is likely facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

After the game, Iwobi spoke to BT Sport about the way the game played out.

On the result…

“We knew it was going to be tough as when we played them away it was not easy. It is a decent result but we have to keep the focus into the next games.”

On the way the game played out after Welbz’s injury…

“It is mentally challenging [playing on after a team-mate is badly injured] but sometimes it comes with the game, and Danny [Welbeck] has had a lot of injuries. We wish him the best and will keep on encouraging and motivating him to get back.”

On Sporting’s tactics…

“We have to give credit to Sporting and they were compact but we lacked a bit of composure, even from myself.”

On Jeremy Mathieu denying Aubameyang a clear goalscoring opportunity…

“It was sad as Pierre [Aubameyang] was through, but it was a smart challenge from [Jeremy] Mathieu and unfortunate for us as we weren’t able to get the goal. We will go again at Wolves which we know won’t be easy as they have started the season well.”

If anything, injury spells increase need for us to reinforce from market in January. With Auba likely to now soely focus on rotating up top with Laca (maybe a bit of Nketiah for lighter games), we need someone to rotate with if not balance threat of Iwobi on other flank. IMO Rwing is where we should bring someone in as Iwobi seems better cutting in from left side. There have been names discussed from Pavon to Pepe. Also we should look at Thauvin or Neres (albeit they may be cup tied) It will be tricky negotiating in Jan and to… Read more »

Again, nonsense from you

I might not entirely agree with Santori, but I do respect his right to have an opinion.

Just because you have the right to an opinion doesn’t mean people have to entertain you spewing the same bollocks over and over again regardless of the topic

Some people just want to hear what they want. Truth is inconvenient to them. Why is this not relevant? We are down a striker. Auba plays wide for now and may need to shift to rotate with Laca more. We only have one player who effectively can run at and engage opponents in Iwobi. If he’s knocked? Think a bit. Fortunately Arse is one of the few sites who keep an open mind on issues. Nonsense is calling only say faults of Mustafi without appreciating his benefits. Unless you are only comfortable with your own narrative, why not let others… Read more »

Is Iwobi better coming on as an impact sub like the L’pool game? He did more in those 15 mins than his last 2 starts.
There is a position in the starting 11 up for grabs but Alex, Rambo and Mhiki are not taking the bull by the horns to stamp their authority on that spot.
I would still go with Iwobi for the Wolves game but I wish at least 1 of these 3 would make themselves undroppable to the manager.

I would love it if Iwobi unleash his arsenal on wolves from the bench

Emery

Are we able to recall Nelson from loan? I doubt it tho
