Lucas Torreira told Robert Pires that if he scored in the North London derby, he’d take his shirt off in celebration.
The Uruguayan got his first Arsenal goal in the 4-2 win, scoring just 2 minutes after Alexandre Lacazette had put the Gunners ahead in the second half.
As promised, he whipped off his top and was duly booked but we’re almost certain he couldn’t care one bit about that as the 22 year loved his contribution to a famous victory in his first derby.
|During the week we had been talking a lot, during the training sessions,” he said, “and I told Robert Pires that if I scored a goal I would take the shirt off.
“Surely he will remember it, because one of the days during the week I told him that. And well, when I scored a lot of things passed through my head.
“A lot of happiness. So much sacrifice, so much work. And it’s good that all of this was reflected in the pitch.”
He also paid tribute to the supporters with whom he is becoming a firm favourite with his high quality midfield displays.
“Arsenal is a great club, with great fans,” he said.
“The matches are always packed, with fantastic atmosphere. The fans have dedicated a song for me and it’s incredible, because I am only here for a little while and they already have such an affection for me.”
He also said he tries to “give his life for the shirt”
Think I’ve got a new favourite!
Shirt before Self
Just love this fella, we are blessed to have him
Ermmm, keep it on next time.. Yellow cards just cost us Xhaka
I hear what you are saying.
But it would be much better if the football powers that be simply got rid of the stupid rule that players removing a shirt whilst celebrating a goal automatically get a booking.
Score against the Sp*rs you can even remove the shorts for all I care
a few years back, a guy at my amateur club scored, and for his celebration, dropped his shorts and yelled ‘you can’t book me for taking my pants off!’
I would imagine he got booked anyway.
We´ve been lacking passion – thus the empty seats at Emirates last season. And now we got passion and attitude and you´re not happy…
I read somewhere that Pires was asked to stop joining in training sessions and was rather sad, glad that doesn’t seem to have been true!
‘I told Robert Pires that if I scored a goal I would take the shirt off.’
I think Arseblog has a rival, given his love for Pires. He’ll have to think what he can do to appeal to Robert.
he comes from Uruguay, hes only 5 foot high…
“Anything that moves tends to get tackled by Torreira”

EPL signing of the year! Let’s smoke United on Wed!!!
How can you not love this bloke?
We’ve really got to look after this lad, at only 22 he’s got such a high ceiling, but the way he plays we can’t expect him to put in 50+ performances a season. Sven Mislintat has played a blinder picking up Terreira+Guendouzi for £33,000,000, there was a time when I trusted Arsene implicitly in the transfer market, but that faith completely diminished in the second half of his time here, but since Sven came in, our transfer business has been much better. Sokratis for £16 Mill was a great bit of business, if only Kroenke would speculate a little to… Read more »
So, I was one of those urging caution about over-hyping Torreira when he first played. He’s gotten better. And better. And still better. He was great against Bournmouth. He was great yesterday. I think maybe he is great.

The DM position (with an actual DM with actual DM traits) is my favorite position in modern football. I knew that LT was going to be my new Arsenal favorite even before he started for us…
This guy is a legend in the making.
I still do not understand why AW did not find a midfield pairing to replace PV and EP after they left the club. It was the beginning of his demise and the baron years. It looks very much like Torreria and Xhaka just might become something similar and what we have been crying out for.
Torreira was fantastic. BUT I think it would be extremely churlish to think its just him. We were good yesterday because the team worked hard together. AND midfield is not just Torreira. Granit has also exponentially improved this season. He wore the captain’s armband yesterday and led the team in a mature performance. He sets the tempo from deep and switches our point of attack very quickly. Also worth mentioning Holding (even if he slid in on Son) made some very good cross field balls to find Bellerin who controlled them very well for us. Spurts were chasing shadows with… Read more »
I wish the wee man painted “Mike Dean is a C#@t” on his chest at half time.
We need one more option in central midfield besides Granit, Torreira and Gouendouzi.
Maybe Willock but Elneny is average. AMN’s final position still undecided, likely auditioning for one of the fullback roles.
What we lack is a box to box player with height and power.
Come summer, we should seriously consider options in market if we want to seriously rotate and press on 4 fronts following season.
I wouldn’t say no to a bit of Doucoure from Watford.
Definitely going to get next years jersey with Torreira on the back. Hoping next years Adidas jersey is a banger.
