Jill Roord First Arsenal Player to Score at Women’s World Cup

New Gunners signing Jill Roord became the first Arsenal player to get on the score sheet at this year’s Women’s World Cup. Roord started on the bench against New Zealand on Tuesday, but came on as a second half substitute to rescue the three points for European champions Netherlands.

Her new Arsenal teammates Danielle van de Donk and Vivianne Miedema also started the game, but it took the Dutch until the 92nd minute for Roord to score a close range header and snatch a last gasp win. Roord signed for the club this summer from Bayern Munich.

Roord told BBC Sport that she was delighted to break her goal drought for her country and to take the three points, “I don’t want to think about how long it’s been, but it’s a relief that I scored a goal and it’s such an important game.

“I don’t know what went wrong today, we weren’t quite there and maybe it was something to do with being nervous. We had a lot of chances and we should have scored long before my goal but we can play much better.”

The Arsenal interest continues in France on Friday, as Jen Beattie, Kim Little and Lisa Evans’ Scotland take on Japan at 2pm, while Beth Mead and Leah Williamson’s England play Argentina at 8pm UK.

If you’re interested in keeping more up to date with the Women’s World Cup in general, I put together a twitter follow list, which you can read below. Be sure to add @shekicks and Katja Kragelund to it as well. We will have another Arsenal Women Arsecast for you during the tournament too, with co-host Pippa Monique who is in France covering the World Cup.

Scrappy goal at a time where the Dutch looked like they wouldn’t score. Looking forward to seeing more of her.
