A.C. Monza have completed the permanent signing of Pablo Mari from Arsenal in a deal worth €7 million.
The Gunners agreed to an obligation-to-buy clause in the Spaniard’s loan agreement last summer which has been triggered now that the Biancorossi have avoided relegation.
The defender initially joined the Gunners on loan from Flamengo in January 2020 – the first signing of the Mikel Arteta era – and completed a permanent move the following summer.

Having played for four clubs in four years, he arrived hoping to put down roots in London but struggled with injuries and fell down the pecking order when Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White were recruited.
An impressive six-month spell with Udinese in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign brought him to the attention of a raft of Serie A clubs and he eventually opted to join newly-promoted Monza.
In their first season in Italy’s top flight, they sat comfortably in mid-table with the Spaniard playing the majority of matches.
His form has been all the more impressive considering he was the victim of an unprovoked attack in October that saw him require surgery on a stab wound.
In total, Pablo played 22 times for Arsenal scoring one goal. We wish him all the best for the future.

Sorry! Nothing against him personally. Horrible stuff with the stabbing, glad he recovered, pleased we made some money on the transfer and wish him the best for his career.
But his level is Monza, not Arsenal, and I’m pleased we don’t have to do average anymore.
When Arteta let him go, he stated that his case was different from other loanees because he believed in his quality but felt he needed game time, something like that. He had some bad games with us but a lot of games where he was very solid, as well.

How much were you expecting?! Besides, there was an obligation to buy in his loan agreement. Fee long since decided, and his good form this season would therefore have no bearing on it.

No idea what we paid for this guy (probably way too much given the regime of the day) but I remember a recent time when we couldn’t even give away our duds so 7 million doesn’t sound bad. Shame it didn’t work out at Arsenal but all the best for the future, Pablo!
We paid 6.8m pound for him 3 years back. Getting back 6. Paid him 85k per week.

Wish him well. That attack was horrific. Glad that he was able to fully recover and that he has found a place that works for him and his family.
And 1 goal in 22 appearances is a better goal ratio than Richarlison managed last season.
That video of him and Mikel having different tactical opinions on whatever scenario they were recreating, has always made me feel he’s the type to stay in football.

What an incredible defender you have to be to get to this level , let alone get to the level, be attacked and then recover to be even better
For his sheer “hotness” alone, we should have squeezed Monza for another 7 million euros.
Best of luck to Pablo. A very likeable guy. Initially he looked like he could be Mertesacker 2.0. He started off well but that rough patch he had really seemed to knock his confidence. Great to see he picked it up again in Serie A, even after that horrific stabbing. His attributes are well suited to Italy. He deserves all the happiness in the world.
This is a guy who took a very unusual path–not many European players go to Brazil. He did well there, and that gave him a route to a big team like Arsenal, at least during a transitional period for us. The end result, a fine career as a professional in a top European league. Good for him.
While he was average at Arsenal, let’s not forget that his performances were probably skewed by playing next to mustafi. No one looks good next to mustafi….
