Joel Campbell made his first start of the season for Real Betis this weekend in their 1-0 home win over Valencia.
Although he didn’t score, and failed to play 90 minutes, it’s a step forward for the youngster who is having to work hard during his loan spell to make an impact in La Liga.
Thus far he’s had a chequered time: 3 substitute appearances, 1 red card (for 2 yellow card offences) and no goals, but it is one of the most technical leagues in the world and should be a good learning experience for him.
The Costa Rican youngster is determined to keep battling to make his mark though, and brushed aside talk of Arsenal as he focused on the task at hand. Speaking to the official Betis website, “I can contribute a lot more and I have to take my chances. There are 26 players fighting for a spot.
“[Arsenal] They give me space and respect the team I’m currently at. I can only think about the present, here at Betis. The team has opened doors for me, they gave me the chance to play in La Liga. I have to keep working and give the maximum for Betis.
“What happens in the future nobody knows.”
And like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell has been nominated for the ‘Golden Boy’, award given by journalists to the most promising young player in Europe.
“For a player from Costa Rica to be nominated for the Golden Boy is something nice”, said Campbell. “It serves to recognize my work, but I have to keep trying every day.”
Golden boy Campbell wouldn’t be able to help us much. We need silverware..
