Arsenal academy cull takes exit total to 15

Arsenal have confirmed that 10 young professionals will not be offered new deals when their contracts expire next month.

Just over a week ago Arseblog News’ resident academy expert @JeorgeBird reported that the club were preparing a ruthless cull with familiar names such as Sanchez Watt, Conor Henderson and James Shea amongst those set to depart.

It’s now been revealed that as of 1 July the aforementioned trio, as well as Jernade Meade, Reice Charles-Cook, Sead Hajrovic, Philip Roberts, Nigel Neita, Samir Bihmoutine and Josh Rees will now be free to look for new clubs.

The likes of Kyle Ebecilio (FC Twente), Elton Monteiro (Club Brugge), Martin Angha (FC Nuremberg), Jordan Wynter (Bristol City) and Craig Eastmond (Colchesta Unizzle) have all also packed their bags in recent weeks.

It can only be presumed that having cut the academy squad by 15 players that Arsenal will make acquisitions at youth level with the club committed to fielding strong sides not only in the high-profile NextGen Series but also the regular under-21 and under-18 leagues.

Obligatory don’t look back in Angha message here

GeeFive

*Sigh* If they could only do this with the deadwood in the first team squad……

ickenham gooner

Wow.

I like the ruthless streak but are we going to need 15 replacements to have appropriate youth squads or is there capacity for some early promotion.

Overall, I see this as positive and if we get a few very decent youth signings in key positions could bode well for a few years time when our experienced first team signings are nearing the end. Best of both worlds.

Loving the new found ruthlessness acquired by our very own AFC

They didn’t have Arsenal DNA

Chamakh, Denilson, Park, Santos, Bendtner, Djourou, Arshavin, Squillaci…

Just needs someone to drop the hammer and yell “SOLD!” after reading out that list

diaby in the list as well

Maybe this will be the nail in the coffin in terms of Arsene’s methodology of attempting to promote from within as apposed to buying quality, experienced players. I sincerely hope so. I’m not sure if it’s through financial restriction or his desire to built a utopian football club but we have seen some pretty bloody shite players sitting on our bench as a back up plan since arriving at the Emirates.

I think it’s time we all started realising that Jack is not an every few years prodigy, it’s more like he’s a once every generation footballer.

Apostolos

I think there’s a lot of changes going on at Arsenal but I don’t think we’ll start to go away from promoting youth players completely. Besides there’s Wilshere but also Gibbs, and a few other players who even though came from different teams have grown up in Arsenal’s youth system Szecz/Chamberlain/Walcott/Ramsey/& even Jenkinson to an extent. And of all the players that left I didn’t think many of them really had a chance to make the team anyways. I hope Akpom/Isaac Hayden & Gnabry/Bellerin still make the first team , although I think all four have the talent and drive… Read more »

I agree that it’s wonderful and important for football clubs to bring through exciting new talent. I don’t feel you’re being completely accurate as to the players you mentioned and their growing up in our youth system. Szcz I will give you but all the others were bought and went pretty much into our first team squad in their first season. They are all products of other teams academies. I have a lot of hope for our current crop but maybe with investment into more established players we can take the pressure off them with previous youth players have felt,… Read more »

Dont forget Thomas Eisfield

Players have to come somewhere. if they can come from our academy, rather than someone else’s academy, all the better.

Remember, we’ve had loads of kids in between the ages of 16-18 (can only recruit from the vicinity for under-16s) that have gone on and played for our first team. To say that the methodology needs to be ditched wholesale is extremely short-sighted.

bard

Also, think of it this way: Jack Wilshere will not have become what he is today, if we didn’t have a full youth academy for him to train and play with.

Jagger

I would rather Wenger keep his current philosophy of creating a core team of home schooled talent (recruited from other academies or promoted from our own academy) and spend money on carefully selected players who fit into our team and complement it. If you look at the long term successful teams over the past half century or so: Liverpool, AC. Milan, Ajax, and more recently Barcelona and Man U, they all have in common the fact that there was a core of of players from their youth set up, who grew up living and breathing the club. Then you would… Read more »

Gee

Hardly new found ruthlessness is it? They release youth players every year its just that this year players like Watt, Eastmond & Henderson have finally come to the end of their contracts which, lets face it, must have been huge! Eastmond was appearing in CC 4 years ago!! Lord knows what long term he got.

It will take another year yet to finally cull all of the other bloated contracts

Windsorgoon

Barcelona seem to do fairly well from academy products. There’s no reason why, given time, we cannot have similarly successful players coming from ours. It may be that not all of them make it at the arsenal, but some may command decent transfer fees. Growing from within is a great way for this club to improve itself (while still buying quality I might add)’ but we won’t have instant success, in the same way spending 300 million over the next to years wouldn’t.

Aamir

Now to clear out 10 “first team” players from the books.

Savage

We already have our new reserve team in place.

Santos will be learning defence, Chamakh will be learning finishing, and Bendtner will be learning running.

Chrispy

Haha. Quality!

Louie

Well there’s only certain amount of spaces before the next batch of youngsters come through. Difficult to make the grade when you have to be a ‘international level’ player in your teens to make it at the Arsenal.

James

“I have seen a security hologram… of Arsene Skywalker… killing Younglings.”

Le_Dooner

Is there anyway we can scrap some of the youth teams and have an Arsenal ‘B’ team like they have in Spain? It would mean young players could play week in week out in competitive matches, rather than half empty stadiums on Monday nights. I realize they’d have to start on the bottom tier of English football, but who knows in 5 years they could be a strong League One team. Experience and Success gained, and the best can transfer to the ‘A’ team. Just a thought.

MERTESCIELNY

That idea has been floated about quite a bit by England’s bigger teams but I think FA is worried that It will cause an unbridgeable gap between the EPL elite and the rest of England, much like the situation in Spain where barça and real have used it to their advantage, strengthening their setup but by having such a formidable system weakening all the other teams

gunner4life

the likes of man city and chelsea would love that wouldnt they

Rufusstan

We should love this idea. The only reason a lot of these kids are being culled is that they have hit 21 and the club have nowhere left to play them except the first team squad.

Most of these players wont be near their best for another 3-4 years at least, but we have to get rid of them before they get to that point. With an Arsenal ‘B’ team, you’d have a few more years to keep them. If at 24-25, they still don’t cut it, then you know they are not good enough.

Craig

The only one that really surprises me is Meade. I thought in that CL game he played in her looked pretty sharp. Hope him and the rest of the guys go on to have great futures at other clubs. Most will do pretty well at Championship level

Woolwich Peripatetic

Meade is a good youth level LB but he’s got Gibbs and Nacho to compete with, neither of whom is going anywhere in the near future.

Those clowns advocating ditching the academy are totally clueless. Our’s costs us less than ten million a year IIRC and if we had to buy the players it generates as a finished article we’d be spunking out MCFC amounts, money we simply don’t have.

BIGarse

Thats a lot of garbage, arsenal is a dirty place

Fatgooner

Shame about Watt: he looked like a good prospect to me.

Subject change: I’m surprised that Arseblog News didn’t do a feature on the remarks made by Thiery Henry last night on Sky News. He critised the players for celebrating so much after they had only finished fourth. His very words were, “There is only one champions and that is Manchester United.”

He was disappointed that we were not challenging for the title any more.

I totally agree with him.

Bonjour

By the way, there are loads of other news items other than Arsenal’s 4th place trophy that will probably make you just as disappointed. The economic crisis shows no sign of recovery, climate change is causing more extreme weather, armed conflicts in Syria and drug wars in Mexico, there is ever-growing inequality and demographic crises around the world.

Everybody hurts… everybody cries..

Podolski

I don’t 🙂

Fatgooner

I don’t give a shit about global warming, the Middle East or Mexico. But I love my Arsenal.

Dr Baptiste

Ah, the classic context quote. Here’s what Thierry and the interview said… The former team-mates of Henry, now with the New York Red Bulls, have been criticised in some quarters for their celebrations after a win at Newcastle that ensured they would finish fourth in the table. However Henry, who won two titles while at Arsenal, hopes that the Gunners were celebrating qualifying for Europe’s elite competition at the expense of north London rivals Tottenham. “Putting Tottenham out of the top four, and I really do hope that’s what they were celebrating about, that’s the only thing you can celebrate,”… Read more »

Donut Maestro

Thank you for the contextual dose of some realism to counter phantasmic convenience.

Rational gooner

They wouldn’t have celebrated if they finished 3rd.
But in Fatgooner’s defence this does qualify as ammunation to attack Arsene & the players.

Hey Fatgooner why are you always moaning & complaining. We’re all tiered of it, the same old stuff, change your script up a bit, and do it less often.

Joeos

From what I have seen of them, most should go on to have careers at a lower level. The exiting prospects who could develop into first team players are Miquel, Bellerin, Eisfeld, Gnabry, Toral, Olsson and Akpom.

Joeos

exiting, missing c after the x.

nii amartey amarteifio

strange intepretation u choose to give to that interview.

RadCarrot

Mmm, I think it’s more to do with our massive, massive wages and FFP coming in to play, which includes hefty penalties for clubs going over their wage budgets.

I think that the club will have to do a lot more culling before the summer is out if they want to hit their targets. Good luck to all who are leaving, though. Shame about Meade, he was quality, but I can understand he wants first team football.

Rufusstan

Cost for these guys is just not a problem, you’d get more then 10 of them for one Denilson

Omasi WC

A whooooooping 15 léft how many Remains then.

davonz

Culling kids who are paid One thousand quid a week is lame. Its the dick heads on 50,000 quid a week who are the problem. Chamak, Bendtner, Park, Denilson, Santos, Diaby etc we need to get rid of. If we are gonna be ruthless we should sign players on a pay for play and performance rated pay scale. No play no pay. Play well get paid well, play shit get paid shit. Take out your own injury insurance too. Apply that to the Manager and coaching staff, no trophies no salary. Thats ruthless. Don’t like it, fuck off somewhere else.

slugboy

Soe peoples understanding of contracts is mindblowing low.

If someone has say a 4 year contract on say 50k per week and you decide to terminate it, you still have to pay the money. If that person has a year left to run you pay compensation of 52x 50 =2.5m. if you did that for say 7 players we are down 17.5m without even kicking a ball.

The secret is not to put duds on such high pay in the first place.

Mrmedia

Southampton can do it – Theo, the Ox, the caveman who I hope is sold to Real Madrid, they have been churning them out. There is no reason we can’t just trot down and buy their entire youth squad and save ourselves the hassle of growing them ourselves. Besides, I know the school and P.E. teachers for Jack and Arsenal had Jack spotted age 9! He was part time at school from 11 years old getting coaching from Arsenal in his early teens. That’s the way to do it.

Frrrred

I stepped on a cornflake, now i’m a cereal killer.

Percy Dalton

Good luck to all the lads who’ve been released. Hope they go on to build good careers

Frrrred

At the end of the day that’s what the youth system is about. There who cut it and those who don’t. These 10 obviously have the potential but not of arsenal quality hence the colchesters, nuremberg, fc twente moves.

It’s now recruiting time and so the process shall continue….
