Walcott: It could be our year

Theo Walcott thinks Arsenal are primed to end their ten-year wait for the Premier League title with confidence in the current squad above and beyond anything he’s experienced since joining the club in 2006.

After their swashbuckling 3-0 victory against Manchester United the Gunners have climbed to second in the Premier League table behind Manchester City and are now looking to consolidate their title credentials as they build up to the hectic Christmas period.

Claiming the Gunners have more individual quality than any of their rivals, Walcott told Sky Sports:

“It could be our year this year but we need to focus on not looking too far ahead – that is important.

“The sense in the dressing room at this moment in time, the players that are in there believe we need to be doing better, we have got the talent it is just, at times, the work ethic may not be there.

“You can sense from the Manchester United game that if we continue to play like that we can beat anyone, we really can.

“Each individual player, when you look at our opposition, we are better than anyone, it is just believing in that and getting that belief in the team.

“[Belief] is definitely showing in patches but, more so in the Premier League, it is becoming a regular occurrence.

“We just need to continue that belief. At times, that belief has not been there and, sensing it now, it is probably the strongest it has ever been since I have been at the club and that is good sign.”

Arsenal travel to Watford this evening hoping to pick up where they left off after the Interlull. Wary of his side dropping their focus after a couple of weeks apart Arsene Wenger says it’s vital his players find their focus quickly at Vicarage Road.

“The target now is to refocus on what we want to achieve,” he told his pre-game press conference on Friday.

“We play against Watford who have conceded only one goal at home and defend very well. They are a very difficult team to play against so we have to focus to get a positive result on Saturday.

“The level of champions and people who want to fight at the top is urgency. Urgency is something that keeps you alert and we know what will be expected of us.

“We have to be conscious that it will be a different game but the level of urgency is a big part of success and that is what we work on.”

Theo ‘in patches” Walcott.

Mr consistent in patches. Long may this patch endure.

Walcott and Patches eh…

Tenzo (Theo's secret lover)

People bag on Theo for sounding ‘fake’ or as if he’s ‘just saying what the fans want to hear’. All i see is an articulate, well spoken, sometimes cliche using guy who no longer says ‘you know’ all the time.

We’ve heard this kinda talk before however, so honestly, pretty and emotive words have honestly reached their sell by date. The squad need to deliver, simple as that. We need to be dominant so consistently that the quote changes from “It could be…” to “It is our year”.

I agree that he seems a really nice, friendly guy, but he loves a bit of hyperbole;
“Each individual player, when you look at our opposition, we are better than anyone”
His hamstrings are probably the only thing better than Aguero.

Tenzo (Theo's secret lover)

Dude, I cackled hard at that hamstrings line. Fuck you for making me laugh at my secret lover…

If it happens, it happens.
So hopefully it will be happened this time as well!

Elsewhere, Daniel Sturridge has picked up yet another knee injury. Makes you appreciate the time taken to ease Walcott into proceedings by Wenger.

Rip Van's Winkel

Brilliant man management by Arsene since January. Luckily for Theo, Giroud obliged by playing shit
but the rest has been down to him.
C’mon you bearded beauty.

Simon

Walcott’s on a pinkie promise now!

Reading comments on here and it really is super hard to tell that Walcott isn’t liked very much.

That was me being sarcastic.

We have a real chance of winning the epl. City is our only rival; take 4 points from them like last year (which means they drop 5), and we are well on our way. United will fall by the wayside – their squad is unbalanced. Chelsea need to be in a form they have proved incapable of this term – they have dropped 16 points already meaning that they are playing for 98 points. If the winner needs 86 pts, do you see them dropping only 12 from now till May? I don’t. Liverpool and Spurs; well will always be… Read more »

To win the league we have to take maximum points in the fixtures against the bottom half, especially on the road. We’ve done that on the run ins the last few years when fighting for the top 4, but need to start that type of mentality where every match is critical now (like we did the United match) and just pray we don’t get stuck in the Europa league or that will doom any chance we have to win the league.

Ha

Happens all the time. We build ourselves up just to fail again. For once could we just stop talking and quietly go about our business unnoticed. I think that would really make us title contenders.

The Car2n Goon

If you tell everyone you’re the best and you yourself truly believe it, then eventually everyone else will believe it. Muhammed Ali ran around trelling everyone he was the greatest and he arguably was the greatest.

“We’re by far the greatest team the world has ever seen”

Bank of friendship

This is our best chance for a title win for years.
Let’s hope theo and Co can deliver the goods.
We’ve been here before but I do believe this may be our season.
Think its ours to loose.

Ferngunner

Telling player to “stop talking” doesn’t work.

Wanggr

Maybe this is our year, maybe not, maybe you guys need to win games. And you, Theo, should score more. You’re the number 14 afterall.

Kergoon

Almost had an heart attack. Read “Walcott out for an year”

Yeah. I am getting my eyes tested first thing today.

Fatgooner

I’ll believe it when I see it. The problem with Wenger’s teams over the last decade has been that they have all lacked the grit and courage to see things through to the end. That’s why the most likely scenario this season is yet another collapse from a strong position at Christmas. And the major problem with this side is the lack of a real world-class striker; that problem should have been addressed last summer. But it wasn’t.

The best thing for Walcott to do now would be to shut his mouth and just get on with it.

Goone's Farm

You really should not be missing the opportunity to keep your thoughts for yourself.

Trez

Exactly. We’ve been down this road a couple of times. I’ll only believe it come May 2016 when we’re top of the table.

arsenal fan

If we somehow end up in the europa cup, I saw we treat it like the carling cup and blood the youngsters and play the reserves. Let’s really give the epl a go this year!
