Overmars: Arsenal link not exciting yet

Marc Overmars has been tipped in recent days to return to the club to fill the role of Sporting Director.

The former Gunner has been linked with a job that doesn’t yet exist but is perhaps seen as part of Ivan Gazidis’s promised ‘Catalyst for change’.

The 44 year old has been working for Ajax in that position, and according to Football London he’s aware of the Arsenal interest.

“I think there is a list with some names and I might be on it,” he said. “But it’s not that exciting yet.

“I know the club pretty well, I have always kept in touch with Arsenal. So in that respect it is not surprising, because I’ve had a few good years.”

“I had certain ambitions as a player, and I have those as a director of football, but right now we’re focused on Ajax. I just signed here for four years.”

Of course contracts can be bought out, and as one of the only former Arsenal players doing this kind of job, it’s no wonder his name has been brought forward.

However, he hasn’t always been a popular figure among Ajax fans, with doubts over his effectiveness when it comes to transfers, and considering our issues there, the last thing we need to do is add another layer of indecisiveness.

It all sounds a bit like talk anyway, so let’s see where it ends up.

Davey Dein

legend, wrecker of old trafford, and fastest gunner of all time

I just hope he takes over as our first director of football…

And bring kluivert jnr with you 😉

We used to have a perfectly decent guy in the position, even if it wasn’t called exactly that – David Dein.

Who took the money and ran

Thw14,,true,, it has gone a bit Pete tong since Mr dein left

Although I do want ex players to come back at any capacity, if we’re creating a new role like director of football, we want someone that has a proven record of being successful and is someone that can actually challenge Wenger. I’d give this role the most experienced and impressive candidate out there, then bring back ex players like Dennis Berkamp as a coach. It seems Overmars is settled at Ajax and that may also be the case with Berkamp, but let’s bring back players that were proven leaders who love the club and can be a positive influence on… Read more »

Heavenly Chapecoense

Overmars was a bit nasty as a player. The only guy Henry accused of intentionaly giving him bad passes. Hope he is loved by players if he comes.

I say dissociate with anything Wenger

Le Jim

Like our stadium, three Premier League titles, 6 FA Cups, the Invincibles and our entire squad?

Kolo Tourette\'s

Overmars, great player, also nice to hear he stays in touch with the club.
Hope he contributes to Arsenal in the near future.

Arsene Wenger

Are you sure he hasn’t been popular? I asked Ajax fans directly what they think of Overmars:

The replies are positive.

sounds a lot like wengers formative years when he used to buy players smartly. having someone like that at board level would be really good

Just saying but Sevilla just parted ways with one of the best sporting director in the game Monchi.. He is rumoured to go to Roma but nothing has been agreed. If the club is really ambitious and in regards to the mess its in ; Monchi should be the option A at any cost!

Things aren t going that smoothe for him at Ajax so no thanks; we ve got enough with Wenger right now.

As long as there is Wenger, there is only one Arsene Wenger.

Ickenham Gooner

Would happily take Overnars as DoF and Bergkamp as Academy boss. Hopefully also the opportunity to find a formal role for Pires too.

Obviously need a new manager but no former players are potnential candidates but I support getting former players involved with the club.

Patrick Vieira will be my choice any day!
