Report: Baggies eye Debuchy

According to L’Equipe, West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Mathieu Debuchy this January.

The France international, 32, has spoken repeatedly of his desire to leave Arsenal and feels his form in the Europa League and Carabao Cup could facilitate a deal after repeated fitness struggles.

Debuchy’s wages – thought to be around £70,000 a week – have proved an obstacle too far for suitors in recent years with French club Nice pulling out of a deal in the summer. He remains under contract at the Emirates until June 2019.

In November, Arsene Wenger said he felt Debuchy could challenge Arsenal’s centre-backs for a regular starting position. It hasn’t played out that way though. If a suitable offer was made, there’s no doubt we’d let the player move on.

I heard Arsenal are interested in Evans (Yeah, again). Maybe we could give them Debuchy plus 5-10m and get evans

La Defense

The Bouch! Love this guy. Sad it didn’t work out.

Chinaman

We’ve got no backup for Bellerin so unless we’re signing someone there’s no point in letting the player go in this window.

Russ

Swap for Jonny Evans?

GraeB

Good call but still need a right back or wing back unless we train Theo defending (or Hector crossing!)

Santori

Why do we want a less than average 30yr old again?

Shades of Squillaci.

Godfrey Twatsloch

Unless there’s a suitable replacement we should hang on to him until the end of the season.

Daft Aider

A suitable replacement?,
what about a lamp post?

Spanish Gooner

We should absolutely not be letting him go unless there is a RB coming in. It’s that simple

Charma

Can I drive him to the hawthorns please ? We will discuss the transfer fee later !

Godfrey Twatsloch

Do you have a decent ride? I’m sure he doesn’t travel in any old banger.

Mpls

Sure – just don’t come back without an equal or better backup for Bellerin!

Godfrey Twatsloch

There’s a player there called Gibbs who is meant to be alright.

Maul Person

Gibbous plays RB / RWB…?!

Ayleym

The clear out continues…. any solid rumours of anyone coming in?

I can see this being another disappointing window

Godfrey Twatsloch

So far a young Greek buck who has showed promise in a league somewhere abroad and he’s straight out on loan.

Ayleym

So it looks like leaving will be
Debuchy
Walcott
Sanchez
Ozil (possibly)
Then with the summer clear out.
Gibbs
Oxlade
Paulista
Schezny

Well at least we’ve signed kolasinac and Lacazette to cover this. Not like we needed any new players anyway.

Atom

It really only makes sense if you believe this is Wenger’s last year and we are clearing the decks for a major rebuild under a new manager

Godfrey Twatsloch

My hopes are that we replace Sanchez with Lemar and that Özil stays. Fanciful perhaps but a boy can dream, can’t he?

John Bagdatopoulos

As a Greek Gooner i could add that Mavropanos’ team Pas Giannina could be labelled as the Greek Burnley. As a Greek wish him the very best in England, as a Gooner i want more quality adds in my club!!

Godfrey Twatsloch

As a non Greek Gooner I hope the loan spell turns him into the best defender of his generation.

TeeCee

They can have him for 20 quid and an official club statement that Mike Dean is a cunt.

Mark

You have to wonder if he will ever play in the league this season with a golden opportunity vs Chelsea to play him at RCB, but Wenger went with Chambers instead (whom had a nightmare of match).

Vonnie

He’s had some bad luck with assaults and injuries, but it seems that every time he’s fit he’s in the news saying he wants to leave. If a half decent offer comes in I think we should get him off the wages, he’s not contributing much and I don’t think we’d miss him. We need to get someone to back up and challenge Hector, but I don’t think Debuchy is the man.

Mpls

I’m not saying we should go and renew his contract, but he’s taking the cup games off Hector’s schedule and apparently we don’t have anyone in the youth reserves ready to step up on that side yet.

For me that’s plenty of reason to say we’d miss him and to hold on til the end of the season.

Kaze

Does he? In all the cup games I have seen (and its not all we played, I admit that, so I may be wrong) he played CB which has hardly anything to do with Hector.
With Wenger’s appearant faith in Chambers and Holding, we have 6 CBs (counting Nacho in there as well) therefore I doubt we need Debuchy at all.
I pity him because his injuries clearly had an impact on his time with us but the way he is rather crying than fighting makes me want him out as fast as possible.

Ashish Chandra

He is a better CB or RB than Chambers..

LuisBoaMuerte

I’m not a massive fan but he’s a solid 6 or 7 out of ten full back and can provide decent backup if not competition to Bellerin. Pretty important seeing as we have no one else capable and we’ll be playing 2x/week with the Europa League and domestic cups.

If we were a real club we’d sell him and bring in something who wants to be here + has a long-term future – but I’m not confident of that.

Mpls

The hardest part of the equation is finding someone good enough who’s willing to risk coming here knowing he’s competing with Hector and possibly sitting the sub bench a lot if he can’t earn the starts.

Or if he does, Hector might be off to Barca and the problem starts all over again.

With specialized positions like fullbacks and wingbacks it’s not so easy to keep them all happy. That’s probably why you end up with situations like Riess Nelson, and Ox (before he wandered off and got lost) playing wingback.

Santori

Possibly one of the worst buys.

Not entirely a quality issue but he had untimely injuries but his attitude when coming back also slightly suspect.

I think the solution for backup/alternate for Bellerin is to move Maitland Niles right.

Monreal can back up Kolasinac but we would move to a back 4 which means we will need a better player to pair with Mustafi or Koscielny since both Chambers and Holding look clearly half baked

Santori

Two penalties against us.

Debuchy skinned by Trarore for the second.

Great work.

Sean Juba

Don’t let the door hit your arse on the way out….
