Arsenal suffered their tenth league defeat of the season as they went down 2-1 against a Brighton side who made the Gunners pay for an awful first half display at the AMEX. Goals from Lewis Dunk and Glenn Murray did the damage inside 26 minutes and even though the Gunners rallied after Pierre-Emerick Aubemeyang’s strike just before the break, they couldn’t find enough cutting edge in the second half to bag an equaliser.
First half
Arsenal started strongly. Aubameyang set the tone with a darting run down the left that earned a corner, Iwobi had a shot closed down at close range, Ozil curled over and Mkhitaryan nearly drew an own goal out of Dunk who shinned a cross just over the bar.
As first seven minutes go, it was promising. Naturally, such is life with this Arsenal team, we capitulated. Even by our standards, the way the next 30 minutes played out was embarrassing.
Brighton’s first venture forward saw Mustafi deflect a cross for a corner. From the resulting set piece, Cech flapped, Duffy headed downwards and when the ball dropped loose just four yards out, Dunk smashed home. It was another awful mistake from our first choice keeper. (1-0)
Buoyed by the goal, the home side pushed for a second. They could smell blood. The pace of Colombian winger Izquierdo, up against Chambers, was a particular threat while the likes of Knockaert, Gross and Murray did simple things like close down Arsenal players who had the ball. We looked somewhat shocked that Brighton didn’t want to allow us all the time in the world to play sideways passes.
Xhaka, Ozil, Kolasinac, Iwobi and Koscielny were particularly guilty of giving the ball away. In some respects, you have to praise them for getting on the ball, our new signings were totally anonymous.
The chances came thick and fast for Brighton. Corners were a consistent problem for the Gunners. Nobody in black seemed to want to compete in the air and we were lucky that Duffy and Dunk didn’t do more damage. Cech made a couple of respectable saves but really it was a case of when, rather than if, Brighton would score again. It came on 25 minutes.
Koscielny, who looks a shadow of his former self, gave the ball away trying to find Wilshere and immediately you sensed danger. Possession was moved to Gross on the right wing and he quickly hung a cross in the air to Cech’s back post. Mustafi really should have dealt with it but fluffed his lines and there was Murray to head down under Cech. More questions have to be asked about the keeping. (2-0)
We looked done for at this point. Honestly, every player in an Arsenal shirt looked like they wanted to be a million miles away. Murray had another header, Gross tried his luck from range and Izquierdo, after beating the offside trap to collect a free-kick passed through our non-existent defence, forced Cech into a save. The flag went up, incorrectly. There was also the sight of a frustrated Jack Wilshere hacking down Knockaert to earn a booking.
That Arsenal were the next side to score came as a surprise to everyone at the AMEX. Three minutes before the break a Kolasinac cross made its way to Iwobi. He faffed a bit, found Xhaka who cleverly spotted Aubameyang to neatly flick the ball home from a couple of yards out. Having looked on the verge of tears for most of the half, the new signing managed a smile. (2-1)
Amazingly, we suddenly started to look like a team again. We might even have had an equaliser when Koscielny’s deflected header hit the post.
Second half
Arsenal looked much more of a cohesive unit after the break as we went in search of an equaliser.
Ryan in the Brighton goal collected efforts from Mkhitaryan and Iwobi before producing a fine stop to tip an Ozil drive from 20-yards just round the post. Xhaka had a claim for a penalty dismissed and Aubameyang twice came close to netting his second of the game. First, he rounded Ryan after being fed by Ozil but opted to cross then he had an effort from another cross blocked.
The game was being played at a quick tempo until an accidental clash between Schelotto and Kolasinac on 65 minutes saw the Brighton man require lengthy treatment. He was eventually subbed off.
The delay helped the home side regroup and killed our budding momentum. Indeed, it was the Seagulls who came closest to the next goal as Izquierdo’s shot, after a strong run, flashed just wide.
Desperate to inject some energy, Wenger sent on Welbeck for Iwobi on 74 minutes and six minutes later sent on Bellerin and Nketiah for Chambers and Mkhitaryan. The desired effect was not forthcoming. Murray had the ball in the Arsenal net only for Izquierdo to be flagged offside for his part in the build-up.
For all our intent, there was little quality in the final third. Clear-cut chances were few and far before the fourth official signalled seven minutes of stoppage time. Even then Arsenal toiled. Aubameyang might have snatched an equaliser but he couldn’t get enough power on his shot on the turn after Nketiah had headed down a Kolasinac cross.
In truth, an equaliser would have been very harsh on the home side who picked up their first points of the season against a top-six club. The way Arsenal are going at the moment, we won’t be a top-six club for long. Burnley, five points behind us, pose a serious threat. How far we’ve fallen. How very far.
#WengerOut. Those words amply sum up what is absolutely important for Arsenal. The defense is so sh!t that its not funny. Arsenal are no longer a big club and are really a joke right now. Look, we responded very well today to how we responded very well on Thuraday when we were respondonding to Sunday response to previous Thursday. You can clearly see the progress in our performance, today we played on higher physical and psychological level than two weeks ago with Ostersund and that’s the right perspective. I’d rather we had a fortuitous run in the Europa League similar to the one that took us to the final of the Champions League all those years ago….and still let Arsene go even if we win it (which is very likely just a pipe dream based on our current run of form). My wanting Arsene to go (maybe even the whole board while we are at it?) does not diminish my desire for my team to return back to winning ways and to the top where we belong, sooner rather than later.
I would love us to win the Europa League, though it seems unlikely on this form but I fear it would mean Wenger definitely sees his contract out until 2019. That would be depressing.
What’s annoying is that we are always playing catchup almost every game because of our atrocious defending and always conceding goals first. In the 2nd half the game was there to be won, but why in the world do they persist with sideways and backwards passing even in the dying minutes when you should take chances by putting the ball in the box and creating some chaos for the opposition? The downward slide goes on…how sad for this great club of ours 🙁
Brighton goalie had nothing to do almost all game, so sad to watch.

i agree to certain extent. the players have to take some degree of blame, but i see what the ox is doing at Liverpool, the bloke gets better by the week and it convinces more that these players are just not being coached right.
Nail on the head Voldermort. Still no sign of Jack signing on, Ramsey likewise. Theo happy to go, Ox turned down a better financial offer to jump ship and now Bellerin linked with a move. All this pointing out the desire these players have to get out while they can.
Wenger brought every single player on the pitch (except the home-grown and youth-team players) to the club. The last proper midfielder he signed before Xhaka was Cazorla in 2013, and he was signed as an attacking player. Wenger has let two transfer windows pass without upgrading our defense.
We’re going through probably a worse slump now than the one we had a year ago, just with a 6-7 different players. There’s one element that remains constant through that. If you can’t see it at this stage, you never will.
Why should they worry – they’re still being paid obscene amounts of money every week. Until they have a manager who makes life tough for them, they’ll carry on. Defensive coaching, indeed any sort of coaching, in basics is required.
Wenger signed them, Wenger picked them, Wenger coached them, Wenger watched them – he has to be responsible. We’ve all worked for bosses we didn’t respect and consciously or subconsciously worked in a way that saw them suffer.

The worst part of the Alonso challenge was him not checking on Bellerin and running away to celebrate.
Kolasinac had the good sense to immediately check on the player and apologise as he was leaving the field. He deserved the leniency he got.

Some of you guys have not played the game and it shows. Lowering your center of gravity to stabilise yourself as you go into a challenge is not foul play. Both players made the same motion, and the ref correctly judged that although it was a foul by Kolasinac, it was not worthy of a 2nd yellow.

Sorry, but Kola’s “challenge” was absurd and very dangerous. He gave a fellow pro a concussion for no reason and should have been sent off, whether or not he intended to shoulder him in the face. Yes we need toughness but there is a limit and Arsenal should never play Pulisian tactics. We need a coach who can teach tactics though.

The first half was as bad as I think they’ve ever been, we were lucky not to be 4 or 5 down. I can handle players playing badly but when it looks like there feeling sorry for themselves and not putting in 100% then that’s tougher to take. Ozil’s body language when things are not going well is terrible and I’m not convinced we can play both him and Mkhitaryn at the same time – too similar. I have stopped watching more Arsenal fixture this season than any other. The play is slow, disjointed, and individualistic. The manager looks resigned to a season without picking up another point home or away. Bould and Lehman must be suffering from apoplectic fits to watch this paper thin defense flap, dive, and wither against every variety of opposition. Long gone are the days of meaningful possession play and accurate passing. Arsenal appear to be meandering down the same rabbit hole as the Rams and Nuggets, is that a fair assessment?
I haven’t ever been a follower of the NBA or NFL so take anything I mention with a grain of salt. That being said, the bizarre and often draconian rules and regulations which are present in both these leagues produce owners and ownership groups who are constantly involved in dubious, slimy, and or shady business practices. Profits are king, the fan experience is much lower down the list. Thanks for the insight. Here in Australia, the draft system exists for our bonkers game of Australian Rules Football. The same problems exist, and persist though. The cashed – up clubs with large fanbases and rogue owners find their way around the rules.
For what it’s worth, I’m (loosely speaking) a NY Jets fan, and aside from a brief spike in the mid – eighties (The Sack Exchange defensive line, Ken O’Brien / Freeman McNeil / Al Toon on offense), we’ve been absolute plop since Joe Namath won the Jets a Superbowl in the late sixties.
Meanwhile, the much more fashionable Giants have won stuff…so I get your point entirely.
