Gunners set to sign young keeper Schubert

According to the Independent, Arsenal are set to sign 21-year-old German Markus Schubert as an understudy to Bernd Leno.

The youngster currently plays for Bundesliga 2 side Dynamo Dresden and was first brought to our attention by the now departed Sven Mislintat and would be available on a free as he’s out of contract this summer.

Schubert kept nine clean sheets in 32 appearances last season and is viewed as a long-term prospect. It sounds as though he could be loaned out with immediate effect to gain experience of life in England, potentially to a Championship club.

With Petr Cech leaving the club at the end of this month, Deyan Iliev’s also up (according to Transfermarkt) and David Ospina likely to join Napoli on a permanent basis, we currently only have Emiliano Martinez as back up to Leno.

It’s probably just as well we’re looking to do some business between the sticks, otherwise, Mesut might be in goal when we hit the USA for pre-season.

Arseblog News Pup?

We had a new signing already. I just didn’t notice.

Mpls

Pretty amazing training work by Blogs. My German Shepherd is frightfully suspicious of anything remotely mechanical. Including brooms.

Matt

Shame we don’t still have Little Mozart.

James

A Schubert Dip in form could be Unbelievable.

Fatgooner

If he’s no good in goal then I suppose he could at least compose a new club anthem.

Anonymarse

Oh wow a signing

Anne Noyd

Yeah it’s bitter-sweet. Shubert lemon

Con

It would be the most Arsenal thing ever if our only signing this summer is a goalkeeper on a free transfer.

myrtle

then to loan him straight back out.

C.B.

6 foot tall. Would prefer him to be a lot taller.

Otto von B.

Yep, well said C. B. If the web data is true another Ospina sized GK.
Perhaps we could invent a rule “no goals from shots over head height” to compensate.

He’s a freebie though. As longs as he’s not Brahms.

iGooner

Aaand we still rely on Sven’s suggestions to recruit. Screw this board honestly.

sambo

If guarantees can be made that if he isn’t first choice on loan he can be brought back with ”immediate effect” because some loans are a circus

“otherwise, Mesut might be in goal when we hit the USA for pre-season.”
Good shout news hound. A place he could play where being a passenger most of the match is actually a good thing.

Nketibag

Well he has got a big presence on the net.

Mpls

oh my.

Deo

He does a mean waltz, I’ve heard.

Mouzie

Typical – not exactly the finished product

Do you only eat at restaurants?

Mouzie

Ah – you missed the joke, nevermind

DBMÖ10

Looks good on the YouTube comps , but who doesn’t.
Although apprehensive about any keeper below 6’3

Badaab

Underwhelming, to say the least… but if he’s going out on loan after a signature, that’s more encouraging to the other young keepers we already have at the club (Martinez, et al).

Merlin's Panini

He’s got that sort of Alex Manninger frame about him. I always liked Manninger, although he was a bit hot headed.

“Mesut might be in goal”

Hmmm, you could be on to something there News Pup

Whilst I’m happy a guy from my local club is being linked with my favorite club, I have to say I wouldn’t be happy if we signed him, even on a free. He is too short, sloppy with his distribution and prone to mistakes, especially at the near post. I watched every Dynamo match the past two seasons, about a third of them live in the stadium and he disappointed more often than not. I have defended him last season because of his age but he does not look like a super talent which is what you would need to… Read more »

I expect Martinez to be given a run as the back up keeper and fight for the number 1 spot. He has never played poorly and he had a really good half season at Reading by all accounts. Would be stupid to spend some of our budget on a new back up keeper when he is already on the books and ready to fight for the number 1 spot. Have seen plenty of our 2nd choice keepers over the years have a run in the first team. Fabianski & Manone took their chances when they came.
