Lacazette free of protective boot

50

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has shared a video of Alex Lacazette training in the gym without the protective boot he sported yesterday evening after picking up an ankle knock in the Emirates Cup.

The France international had to be subbed off early in the first half on Sunday but did allay fears of a serious problem when he faced reporters on his way out of the ground.

Aubameyang shared a short clip on Instagram in which Laca and Shkodran Mustafi are seen doing an arm workout with those weird ‘battle rope’ things.

It remains to be seen whether Emery, who also said the injury wasn’t serious in his post-game press conference, takes the striker to France for Wednesday’s clash with Angers. If there is any doubt at all about his fitness, you’d imagine he’ll be rested.

Arsenal’s first game of the new Premier League season is against Newcastle in 14 days time.

Yes, our problem will be scoring enough goals to compensate for those that we’re sure to concede with some of our defenders.

Wow, you must be that guy SANTORI in disguise.
Or the reincarnation of the FatGooner himself!

Give it a break.

Really? You mean our defense aren’t that great? I, like everyone else in this community, hadn’t noticed. Thanks for pointing that out for me. A real original point.

Santori is here.

No need for disguises.

I speak fairly, I’m sure many others feel somewhat similar to me.

I don’t have the habit (Unlike some people) of falling into the media line or lazy thinking which ends up with simplistic scape goating of certain players, ignoring the overall issues and distracting from the real problems.

I don’t fall for those traps.

Mustafi isn’t the best defender by a mile but he isn’t as poor as most prefer to make him out to be.

Nor is Torreira as solid as some would deem to suggest.

But what is the real problem in defense? It wasn’t Mustafi at fault for first Lyon goal.

Chambers and Sokratis were both poorly positioned to defend the cross.

No one prefers to mention this.

Mustafi was slow to cover against Dembele for second goal but Sokratis equally culpable (and we know Mustafi is carrying a muscle strain)

He put in a well timed tackle later to deny the same Dembele bearing in on goal in the box. The detractors will of course blame him for ‘going to ground’ and being ‘reckless’ but what had it been Sokratis, they would be all having a good wank.

Also Mustafi was very proactive moving the ball forward and pushing the ball ahead of the defenders to make space. Of course if it were Saliba analysis, people would be creaming themselves but since its Mustafi, they prefer to convenient ignore that.

Again this is not to excuse Mustafi for poor concentration more an indictment of fans that like to put certain players faults under heavy microscope whilst not seeing the trees and conveniently ignoring the faults of their favorite players.

True. There’s nothing wrong in stating the obvious.

Santori
Santori

There’s nothing wrong in having a more nuanced view that presents the whole picture either.

Mustafi was not there when we lost 3 goals to Wolves or 4 to Chelsea in the finals.

So what was the reason? You will shift your criticism to Granit or Ozil I suppose.

Sokratis and Chambers were both poorly positioned to defend against Lyon’s first goal. We had 4 in the box none picked up Dembele.

How’s that for stating the obvious?

Goonerjag
Goonerjag

He’s not shit – he’s just not good enough right now to play for Arsenal at the level that is required. All of us should remind ourselves now and again that our players read what’s written about them and even throwaway comments can fuck up their confidence even more.

Goonsquad
Goonsquad

He has become the focus for a lot of frustration, not without reason, but I assume we do still have defensive coaches somewhere. The flaws in his game aren’t so bad or frequent that they can’t be addressed. I’d prefer to see him fixed than binned. That being said, if we get Rugani on loan for the season I’ll be delighted.

We look much better with one striker. If Pepe joins we should play Nelson-Auba-Pepe and Laca from the bench.

Flash

Just the opposite imo.
Laca was exceptional in the US as a creator.
What if – we’d try him a little bit behind Auba and Pepe in a 3-4-3 formation?!
Lightening fast attacks but also a five man (stable) defence with Kolasinac, Bellerin as wingbacks…

Many people disagree with you because they love Lacazette as I do, but you have right we look better with one striker and 2 wingers

Aubameyang at left wing, Laca in the middle, Pepe on the right is my incredibly unique insight here.

Laca a bit behind might be a thing. He’s a big man, and even though the “Target Man” has gone out of style, it would make a lot of sense. Or, you know, all our great players are offensive players, and we need to fit them in somewhere 🙂 Perhaps the cure for all our defensive woes could be to play without any…

Mayor McCheese

You think Laca is a big man? Clearly you’ve seen more of him than I have!

A big (long)name maybe. ALEXANDRE LACAZETTE.
Damn, Auba would still beat him.

Laca is 1.75m tall.. Hardly the imposing target man! He is however fantastic with the ball at his feet and has great vision.

Laca/auba/pepe (no particular order) in a fluent front 3 could be devastating.

Wait so we have probably one of the best strike partnerships today, a pretty much full on bromance who score goals for fun, and you want to break them up? Right..

So, what are those rope exercises for? Arm/shoulder strength? (Not obvious why that would be part of a football workout.)

What you want is that explosive forearm strength for sneaky swipes to the balls of defenders during corners.

1) Dreaming. We won’t get two wingers. Its either or.

2) Torreira if you noticed has not been preferred over Granit in deep role and that’s for a reason. Maybe this season he will step up more but he wasn’t the full answer last season.

3) We will rotate players into different formations therefore there is no definitive starters. We need variation.

4) We will likely NOT get Tierney if we want a new Cback. Emery if you noticed spells out clearly midfield, winger and Cback.

5) I think unless we get someone of the level of Umtiti, Sokratis is a starter for me. Not sure if Pape Cisse is strong enough a recommendation.

6) Subs. Saka prob in peripheral competitions at best if not better to loan out. Too young.

7) Jenkinson and Elneny , selling them depends if buyers see enough quality in them for the price. This is ditto Mustafi.

8) Mhkitaryan is a decent player but if we have enough cover (Cebellos, Ozil and IMO Smith-Rowe) then we should try and sell him to make some funds.

9) Again Granit is going nowhere. He is important at the moment and frankly he is much improved. Issues still there but we are talking about a player who is on the upward trend. Plus midfield is still shaky and Cebellos is not long term.

10) I would not loan Nelson. We need cover for wide areas even with Iwobi and new player (singular). Plus we have to keep the other two on their toes and Nelson looks full of fresh ideas.

11) I’d be tempted not to loan Smith-Rowe but he has time on his hands. Depends on the loan. If he is not playing much on a loan, he may as well be contributing first team.

12) Cback I think we frankly need Raul to try and pry Umtiti. BUT that will be difficult. The pair as mentioned at RB Liepzig (Upamecano or koyate) look interesting. They’ve amassed over 50 games each and the German team was frugal to say the least all season with 29 goals conceded ONLY.

Which begs the question why did we have to spend 27m on another future Cback with risk to loss down the line should he not deliver and of course no impact currently.

I feel we were intent on leaning on Koscielny yet again for one season too far.

The other player (prob unlikely if we are getting Pepe) is Adama Soumano the captain at Lille OSC. Again another very stingy team at the back and a solid 27yr old with good physical strength and mobility.

I think we jumped the gun a little TBH with Saliba.

Santori
Santori

I would add on Chambers you also have to consider the aspirations of the players.

If he gets a good offer, he may likely go bc at 24yrs + he wants to feature regularly now. So you may think we should use him as reserve only but he may beg to differ.

That goes for Bielik. Although in Bielik’s case he is still amazingly only 21yrs and on contract so we could attempt to hold him one more season on loan if we do not think an offer is strong enough.

BUT with Mavropanos and Bielik perculating, you again do have to wonder why we would risk 27m on another young defender.

If anything we have far too many options at the back without having a full package solution for the position.

Holding will of course be seriously looked at to step up but risk is the issue.

One or two injuries to key players, one or two poor moments and our confidence saps very quickly, our game goes to pots.

We need IMO someone solid at the back to hold it together (not new, we all know that). BUT market is tight for this player so price may be high which is why all these ‘alternative (half) solutions’

Its amazing how quickly our game unravels once something goes wrong be it a dodgy red card or a top asset getting injured or an unlucky goal conceded at the wrong time.

Suddenly we look shaky at the back and bereft of ideas going forward.

Concentration is one aspect but maybe also leadership to steady the ship.

I’m not sure I prefer Laca as a captain bc generally you would prefer someone closer to the backline who can see the play ahead to help organise particularly during defensive phases of the game or in transition.

I think Sokratis (if he doesn’t engage in needless Greco-Roman feel me ups) is a candidate.

Granit has some aspects of his game he still needs to improve but he is a much better player than many would want to give him credit for and frankly at this point of time, he is still the lynchpin for the midfield. Again issue with him is concentration but that goes frankly for the whole team. We lack fully sustained effort.

Thereafter I’d say Leno is new (as for the matter Sokratis) but no reason to say he can’t take a leadership role one season in and Monreal maybe a good senior voice for back up (Hopefully in the Bacary Sagna mold)

BUT we need a bit of leadership and gumption to keep heads from dropping.

A welcome relief. Rest his ankle, get his conditioning up, and make sure he’s 100% for the real matches.

https://www.arsenal.com/news/emery-responds-transfer-speculation

As he mentions (Unai) : One winger, one midfield, one cback

We have the midfield (temporary albeit) – Cebellos

We prob have the winger – Pepe

So unless Saliba is it (which I hope not), we may have a Cback.

No Lback. As I mentioned, if Koscielny is doing us a favour (too many people quick to judge and cast blame), it means the club needs a better solution than Saliba (distraction) and Koscielny one more season.

It is an either or IMO and Cback is now likely priority bc of Koscielny so no Tierney. We need to put all the money remaining into the best Cback we can get, not more half measures.

If we have 40m base budget plus 20-25m on player sales, likely budget is around 60-65m

We’ve spent 14m on Pepe (if over 5 years at 72m), likely we are paying for Saliba as well (more than 4m prob closer to 7m) and we are paying maybe 4m for Cebellos loan.

So that’s about say 25m out of 65-65m which leaves us around 35-40m for the Cback. There is no room for anyone-else if we want to bring in good quality with minimum risk.

Sounds totally unrealistic to me but if it’s true this would be my favourite transfer window ever.
Then I’ll wake up and we’ll have given him a contract extension and re-signed Yaya Sanogo.
