Report: Lazio still in the hunt for Torreira deal

Lucas Torreira is currently training alone in Spain as he looks to work his way back to London from Uruguay without having to quarantine.

The midfielder’s homeland remains on the UK government’s travel red list so, despite his international commitments ending several weeks ago, he’s not taken part in any of Arsenal’s pre-season preparations.

The Gunners seem happy enough with the situation, presumably because Mikel Arteta has written off the player, but we still need to find him a new home.

According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Lazio, whose interest first surfaced in June, remains an option.

The Serie A side are the latest in a long list of Italian suitors – AC Milan, Fiorentina and Torino have all sniffed around in the last couple of years – and are confident a year-long loan deal with an option to buy is possible.

Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare apparently wanted Torreira when he was at Sampdoria and the 25-year-old is aware of the interest and open to playing for Maurizio Sarri.

In the aftermath of his mother’s passing, Torreira spoke openly about his desire to return to South America and his preference to play for Boca Juniors. It’s a dream that seems unlikely due to financial reasons.

He’s a decent player, shouldn’t be difficult to find him a permanent home and bring a bit of cash in.

El Mintero

Obviously is difficult. Nobody wants him!

loose_cannon

Italian teams are such teases omg! 😂

Vaibhav

Nope, they are broke

John

I still rate Torreira as a deep-lying midfielder. Better than Elneny and Xhaka though a different player in some respects. It’s a pity his stock tanked when Emery played him out of position much further forward. He has never been the same man since.

Jarghs

Agree 100%. Really hoped he could have been reintegrated into the squad, but it seems like that ship has sailed.

razu

these broke ass Italians at it again

Gunnermite

XhakTor Wil be an upgrade over XhakNeny if we were left the choice between the two.

UzesGooner

Definitely. As we’re keeping Xhaka we need to get rid of Elneny….preferably to then replace him with Zakaria

Daveo

IMO none of those three should be preferenced ahead of lokonga. Its not 2019, time to move forward with the exciting young midfield talent we just brought in. What a joke to spend all summer basically knowing xhaka is going to Roma only to pull the plug, tell us he’s so integral to the team, and seemingly re up him for 4 more years. It’s almost like we’re being mocked with the temptation of change and doing something different only for management to run scared back to the safety of stability.

Teta's cult of personality

Indeed. This club isn’t getting itself back to being a top 4 club without taking more risk in midfield. And for that to happen, we need to actually play the midfielders who take risk.

I can’t believe we’re about to get a sixth year of Xhaka and Elneny in this team. Some presidents and prime ministers don’t even last that long in office.

madara

wouldn’t it be TorrAka or Xhakeirra? I also prefer torreira to elneny as a xhaka partner.

Freddie08

Great defensive and possession orientated player when operating at the base of a midfield 3. Just doesn’t fit in Arteta’s (or Emery’s) 4-2-3-1. Hoping for his sake he finds himself a club that better appreciates and utilises his skillset.

Daveo

Torreira doesn’t fit, willock doesn’t fit, martinelli doesn’t fit (arteta stated as much in reference to playing with tierney), pepe barely fits (watching willian start over him was sickening), holding doesn’t fit (he’s essentially been replaced), saliba clearly doesn’t fit. That’s a lot of very talented players that “don’t really fit”. There’s an alarming trend here.

Teta's cult of personality

Don’t mind Mikel. He’s just had too much of that Diet Pep(si) to drink. I’m sure when the gaseous fluids subside he’ll realise he’s no longer in Manchester.

Freddie08

100% agree. There are certainly questions as to why Arsenal recruited a manager who seems to wants to play a high press 4-2-3-1 system with extensive crossing, when that approach doesn’t seem to suit a significant number of Arsenal’s squad. If Arsenal want to persist with Arteta, it is going to take a number of years for Arsenal to turnover the squad to suit his system, and in the meantime the product on the field it might not be so pretty.

A Different George

Torreira, Willock, and Holding, whatever you think of them as people, aren’t good enough to start for a Champions League-level team. Playing Willian made sense for about three matches, and I cannot help wondering if something else was involved in continuing so long. Pepe is playing regularly now. I have zero idea about what’s going on with Saliba, and neither do you. So, basically, you would play Martinelli more. Even if I agree, that’s not “an alarming trend.” That’s more “Ateta sucks and I will use any fact to support that opinion.”

SarcasmB0t

Aubameyang doesn’t fit either, neither does Leno. Lacazette theoretically fits, but he’s the definition of a player not “good enough to start for a Champions League-level team.” A better question is, who does Arteta’s style fit? Tierney, certainly, and ESR, and Saka – although playing as a left wingback in Elneny’s back three seemed to suit him too, and he didn’t have any issues playing in Gareth Southgate’s system. Partey has a more proactive role than he did at Atletico, and the jury is still out on how well he can do it. The system does suit Granit Xhaka, though.… Read more »

Lazio, Los Angeles, Lost Planet – I don’t care, I just hope this guy finds a new home soon. One where he’ll get an opportunity to play, and we’ll get an opportunity to make back some money next season.

Hulahoops Baptista

2 year loan with spaghetti bolognaise option delivered in installments over the next 10 years offer incoming!

TeeCee

Are we talking fresh spagbol for each instalment, or will the later ones have green fur on them?

Hulahoops Baptista

Difficult to decide which will is more powerful: Serie A’s cheapness, or Italian food pride. Likely conclusion: 2 year loan option with obligation to deliever installments of spaghetti bolognaise over a 10 year period pending agreed acceptance of the precluding option by all named parties. Acceptance of option at this gateway juncture will trigger a 6 month deliberation period to negotiate acceptance criteria for the quality and/or volume of spaghetti bolognaise. Any changes to the scope of this payment must be managed by Lazio’s change request process, which aims to deliever a verdict in line with Lazio’s “Covid recovery master… Read more »

K9ine

He can do a better job than Niles if we can’t move him in. Our MF options are already too light. And we don’t seem to have enough money to buy.

Henkamp

What a terrible transfer window this has turned into. Can’t move players on, can’t bring anyone in. Going to be an interesting season ahead. Not excited to see the Chavs and Citeh dominating this league.

iGooner

Same thing different seasons for as long as I can remember tbh

Iyke

I believe that it last chance for Edu and Arteta because they always shifting their best players to buy wood, Lucas Torreira is still a better player to compare with Arsenal squad, why most of players they reject make good progress outside because Arteta is working on system he can’t compete with,
Well his time is ticking out soon.

Hakuna Matata

I don’t think torreira was that successful at atl madrid

kasgood

I expect Edu to go when the window ends, all those photos of him on holiday when this is the 1 part of the season’ he should be busy. He’s taking the piss, maybe he knows the end is nigh.

Arteta-tinted Glasses

Hope at least these guys have some cash.

Damo

Given the choice I’d have him over Elneny
