Arsenal Women Arsecast Episode 74: Mid-season Review

Welcome to a brand new episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, the number one podcast about Arsenal Women.

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim talks to Houston Dynamo’s lead Video Analyst and Arsenal Women fan Carl Carpenter. There’s is a small bit of discussion about the North London derby defeat (because nobody needs a deep dive on that!) then Tim and Carl go through each area of the team to review the first half of the season, including, the attack adapting to Alessia Russo upfront, the new midfield emerging underneath Little and Walti, McCabe as an inverting full-back and how a new-look defence has settled down, as well as some goalkeeper chat too. Carl and Tim also discuss how Arsenal can better deal with deep block defences.

Thank you Tim, good job as always but this time I was expecting a criticism more incisive, especially in the striker controversy, why not introduce Alessia slowly and build the relationships in a steady way without compromise the result of the matches, last year we won more points only with Stina the actual best scorer. We are helping Lionesses in developing a prolific strikerI reckon is a fair question. Then the controversy about the goalies performance, I’m agree they are not the only cause of droping points but the statistics are not good at all. Merry Christmas to everyone and… Read more »

In broad agreement with much of what was discussed, however: I am not a fan of Zinsberger because I think her distribution is too slow and poor. If the only alternative is Mary Earps then stick with Zinsberger. Earps is an overrated, gobby northerner. For a goalkeeper who is supposed to be “The best in the world” (Debateable) she makes too many routine errors. In defence I am afraid that Maritz is not a great fit, her default position is to pass backwards. We need a dynamic full back not one so cautious and error prone. Finally, highest praise for… Read more »

Yeah I understand the desire for an upgrade but, honestly, I don’t think there are too many top GKs about. I don’t think Zinsberger is as out of line with top GKs as people think. Stick the highlights on in other games / leagues and you’ll see other team’s GKs make a lot more errors than you realise.

From my perspective I feel Goalkeeping is one area where the gulf between mens game and women’s is really obvious, and I don’t see that it should be the case.
Maybe average height plays a part, and perhaps young girls are discouraged from diving around in the mud? But I see in other “boys sports” women excelling. Just based on speed of reactions, ability to jump etc, I kinda thought excellency in GK would be very achievable for women.

That’s a fair point to make, and there are reasons for the disparity, It’s only very recently (last five years, maybe? Tim will know!) that there has been any dedicated or specialised coaching for female keepers at all. Old school GKs more or less taught themselves. I think that’s the biggest factor. Also GK is not the most glamorous position but it’s likely that with Mary Earps’ popularity, more little girls will want to train as GKs from the start, as opposed to just ending up in that position. Interestingly, Rachel Brown-Finnis says that nowadays when young women/girls are being… Read more »

Thank you – lots of points to mull over. I thought the similarities with Jürgen Klopp’s early Liverpool sides was interesting. I watched the PL 0-0 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United and was struck by how similar it was to the WSL North-London derby: domination by one side who couldn’t score because of hurried poor decision making in the final third, not looking for the best pass and too many inaccurate, speculative shots. I don’t believe such a performance makes Klopp a bad manager, and so I don’t want to write off Jonas too soon either. One other point,… Read more »

What you say about D van Domselaar and Leitzig I second very strongly. It’s a reminder not to get seduced by big names/hype.
