Arsenal Women Arsecast Episode 82: Here comes the summer!

Welcome to a brand new episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, the number one podcast about Arsenal Women.

On this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, Tim is joined by Arseblog News match reporter Aidan Gibson. They discuss the win over Manchester City and how it feels to give Chelsea a lifeline back into the WSL title race, then there is in-depth discussion about the futures of Vivianne Miedema and Stina Blackstenius, whose current contracts expire in the summer. Tim and Aidan then talk about the other profiles of player Arsenal might need this summer, especially given their goal scoring record which has been far inferior to Chelsea and Manchester City this season. They discuss whether 25 players is too many for a season and the consistent rotation of the number 10 position and whether it needs greater clarity.

You can follow Aidan on Twitter @BeltransMole and Tim @Stillmanator

If the coach asks the players not to rush/panic then you end up with slow play until towards the end of games when the players will naturally rush. I do think this process is a hard watch and has not produced results. Last season shows that quality players can adapt so it is less about players and more the system/processes.

Thanks, Tim and Aidan. Breaking structure is just as important sometimes. Even in the big games when we are relying on our structure, we need improvisation, a joker in the pack player who will do something that no-one expects. I suspect that Viv Miedema will always have problems if she is having complications now. JE will never get everything you want – even Pep moans about his squad. Work with what you have and be happy about it. All of the midfield options 6+8+8, 10+6+6, 10+10+6, etc – we have the players to do any of those. If VP ever… Read more »

I enjoyed the podcast, but find it strange that for all the discussion of players who do or don’t fit into Eidevall’s system, there was no discussion as to whether he is the right person to take the team forward.

Doesn’t really matter. Everyone has an opinion on Jonas but the fact is he is not going anywhere soon. The guys were discussing subjects that can and most likely will happen in the close season. Who will be with us next season we don’t yet know but I am pretty sure Jonas will be like it or not!

Tim Stillman

Yes, this is it, he’s not going anywhere so it doesn’t feel worthwhile at the moment. Also I prefer to let people make up their minds on that, when it comes to the manager I have always preferred to be much more reporter than pundit, I think that’s more appropriate.

Lots to think about there. You really identified the problem we have in moving the ball quickly once we get into the opponents’ half. As with most top-class sport, the problem is in the mind. You have to have confidence in your instinct. Lauren Hemp’s goal was nothing to do with structure or pre-planning. OK, you have to have the skill to hit the ball accurately, but that should be a given for professional footballers. (How I wish Lauren was coming our way!)

This hasn’t found its way onto YouTube yet.

Given that this (and other movement) hints heavily at us signing Mariona, I’m a little worried about the age profile of our front line, especially our wingers. Mariona’s not known for being especially fast and while I’d get it more if Jonas was signing her to be primarily a 10, I don’t love the idea of having all our wingers be in their late 20s and early 30s and not succession planning a bit more in the wide areas. Really hoping that we sign her to be a 10 and someone more rapid (Brand, Jonsdottir, Dufour, someone like that) to… Read more »

I thought we had Jules Brand on our radar before but she chose to go elsewhere. Not much we can do if the player would rather be somewhere else!

Wolfsburg seem to going through a period of change. Lena Oberdorf is going Bayern, Ewa Pajor is almost certainly going, probably to Barcelona, and Dominique Janssen seems to be eyeing a return to the WSL. There were rumours that Jule Brand might also to Barca; however, she has stated that she’s going to see out her contract with the Wolfinnen until 2025. Nevertheless, I’d love to see come to Arsenal. Their other young player that I really like is Vivien Endemann. Only picked up this season from lowly SGS Essen and already has eight goals. This is all probably fantasy,… Read more »
