According to L’Equipe, Ligue 1 side Evian made an attempt to bring Sebastian Squillaci to the club this January but were unable to do a deal because of the player’s wages.
Although he has just 6 months left on his current Arsenal deal, and admitted himself he could leave during the transfer window, it seems salary at Arsenal is not commensurate with a move to a club with such limited financial resources.
Speaking earlier this month, the former French international said, “Marseille, Nice, Monaco, Bastia or Ajaccio are clubs that speak to me. I am 32 years old. I still have two or three good seasons left. On the French Riviera or elsewhere. I will choose depending on the opportunities that arise.”
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has ruled out any further departures from the squad … unless new players come in. In an interview with Arsenal Player he was asked if anyone was likely to leave, and he said, “At the moment no. We have a good squad, a balanced one. At the moment nobody can go out, unless we buy somebody.
“At the moment our focus is to keep everybody. In every position we have two players. Three is too many and one is not enough.”
Two’s company, three’s a crowd and poor Ollie Giroud is left to play with himself.

I am really tired of this. How long do we keep blaming Stan and Ivan??..Its crystal clear that money is there to spend. If Arsene thinks that the current lot is good enough then he has completely lost it in my opinion and should just leave. I am greatful for what he has done but right now his stubbornness is costing us.

Well, in this case I doubt Evian could have afforded Squillaci even if he earned £30,000 a week. The other thing to note is that at the time he arrived, nobody could have anticipated how useless he would be. He was an experienced defender with international experience and a solid record. Didn’t have the benefit of hindsight.
None of that is to say that there aren’t problems in the wage distribution, though.

Agreed. Even the best managers (and I still rate Wenger as one of the best) need to have some kind of pressure to perform and advance from those above them. You don’t want all-out spats between board and manager, but neither do you want the present situation where everybody’s going through the motions and ther’s no tension in the relationship at all. The result is that as long as the money keeps coming in, the owner and executive team leaves as much to Wenger as they think they can get away with, and inertia sets in. Are you seriously trying to say you think Aaron Ramsey has ‘developed’ into a winger? It’s plain to see he doesnt have the pace, fitness, crossing ability or defensive capabilities to play there. Wenger has a team of players that many of them seem to be playing out of position. Arteta is not a defensive midfielder. Even if Evian offered minimum wage that’s better than nothing and arsenal should loan him out making up the rest of his wage. We’re not a fucking charity but we’re handing out wages to people to provide some company at training and make the squad look a decent size come photo time. It’s a bad debt, write it off and move on. nothing personal against these guys but its time to get real here.

In fairness to Arsene, he can’t really come out and say, “You know, our squad is a bit shit, and we desperately need to bring in 4-5 competent football players.”
No, really him and the board should come out and say that in respect to all the fans whose hard earned money they’ve stolen in the last 7 years, because clearly the lack of investment in the making a the best squad of players they could build is beyond a joke now.
Why can’t he? Other managers would come out and say it. Wenger is all about protecting his players but a bit of solid criticism might do them some good. He’s too much a father-figure to a lot of them and that’s great with the youngsters but many of them are blooded internationals. Or, like Theo, not really that young (he’s been a first-teamer for a while and with his contract saga, doesn’t seem too innocent to me).
I’m a big Wenger fan but he has to shake up his policy. He seems jaded and tired by it all now.

If this is a good and balanced squad , we wouldn’t be scrambling around 6th place with 4 pts up to 4th and being knockd out by L2 teams. This team need to be strenghten and I can’t understand why a smart man as Arsene fail to see this, he has the money so thats not the problem.
To be totally honest, when I looked at our squad before the season began, I thought the squad, player for player, was as good as any in the league. With Abou “like a new signing” Diaby and Wilshere coming back I definately felt our squad had improved from the players we had available last season (those players along with Pod, Santi and Giroud were more than enough compensation for the loss of THEM 2, in my opinion). A man as smart as Wenger would spend 20million on a top-notch talent just to please the fans. The only reason he’s looking for bargains is AFC. At 65 years of age any man would like being respected by 60k supporters, rather than getting booed off the pitch every second week.

I must confess to a mild form of self-diagnosed schizophrenia with Arsenal these days. I lurch between head in hands ‘am I the only one?’ disbelief to reluctant acceptance of a moderately successful but comparatively (relative to our previous achievements) disappointing existence. I really have nothing more profound to offer and perhaps that’s the worst thing of all.
Still a couple of weeks to go yet. You never know!
