A terrible mistake by Bernd Leno gifted Everton a 1-0 win against Arsenal at the Emirates on a night when Gunners supporters gathered in their thousands outside the ground to protest against the Kroenke ownership.
With his teammates dominating proceedings, the German fumbled Richarlison’s shot into his own net with 14 minutes remaining to put another dagger in Mikel Arteta’s hopes of qualifying for Europa via the Premier League.
Pre-game
In the absence of Alex Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah got the nod to start in attack. The England under-21 international had Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Nicolas Pepe in support meaning Gabriel Martinelli took up a place on the bench. Thomas Partey and Dani Ceballos anchored midfield allowing Granit Xhaka to continue his role at left-back. Bernd Leno was restored between the sticks having been rested against Fulham. Martin Odegaard, back from an ankle problem, was a welcome addition to the bench.
First Half
Thanks to a police helicopter buzzing overhead and chants filtering through from the anti-Kroenke protest outside the Emirates, there was a frisson of excitement in the air as the game kicked off. Within minutes, a cacophony of fireworks added to the atmosphere. It turned out to be the most exciting moment of a drab opening 45 minutes.
Both sides looked organised off the ball and tidy on it but a cutting edge was sorely missing. Calvert-Lewin, back from injury, added a physicality to the Everton frontline but Holding, Chambers and Pablo Mari did well to keep him quiet.
Half chances were the best either side could muster before the break. Saka tested Pickford with a low drive, Nketiah tried to cause mischief with a high press and Partey stole balls deep in the Toffees half but without an established goal threat, we did look a bit toothless. Much of Arsenal’s play involved trying to free Nicolas Pepe but Seamus Coleman wasn’t unduly hassled.
At the other end, a couple of Partey fouls, first on Richarlison and then on Rodriguez, set-up free-kicks in dangerous areas for the visitors. Sigurdsson clipped the bar with the first and the second, by Digne, was cleared with ease.
It was tight and tense but, ultimately, it wasn’t hard to see why both sides are currently labouring outside the European positions.
Second Half
Everton sent a warning inside two minutes of the restart as Sigurdsson met a Coleman pullback only for Holding to produce a fine block to stop the net rippling.
Five minutes later, it looked as though the Gunners had won a penalty. Richarlison stuck out a lazy leg to fell Ceballos and VAR confirmed the contact. Except, in the build-up, the technology somehow still found a reason to deny us the spot-kick. Pepe’s shoulder was adjudged offside by a millimetre and the decision was reversed.
Arsenal continued to search for the opener. Holgate came close to putting past his own keeper when he deflected a Chambers cross into the side netting. Soon after, Pepe and Saka both played further dangerous crosses into the box but they escaped anyone in red.
Pepe’s presence continued to be a nuisance to Everton and the Ivorian drew a booking from Holgate who went straight through him. VAR even checked to see if it was worthy of a red. From the replay Chambers bounced a volley just wide after connecting with Saka’s set piece.
The pressure kept mounting. Ceballos tried his luck from range forcing Pickford to claw away for a corner. Partey followed suit but his effort, as they so often are, was wild and way off target. Clearly frustrated that his side couldn’t make their dominance pay, Arteta prepared Martinelli and Odegaard to come on. Pepe and Nketiah made way.
Everton had barely been in our half for 30 minutes but thanks to a ridiculous mistake by Bernd Leno they took the lead on 76 minutes. A ball over the top allowed Richarlison to chase into space, he skipped past Xhaka and crossed low into the six-yard box. The German was under no pressure whatsoever but somehow allowed the ball to squirm through his legs and into the goal. It was a disastrous piece of keeping. (1-0)
Arteta chucked Willian on as a last throw of the dice but the visitors sapped the tempo out of the game, sat deep, added Yerry Mina’s height to the backline and held firm through four minutes of stoppage time despite Martinelli testing Pickford with a late effort.
We probably didn’t deserve to lose tonight but a seventh home league defeat of the season underlines where we are as a side. Attention now turns to the Europa League. It would be good if we could deny Unai Emery the chance to heap further misery on us.

VAR for when the ref sends off one player or instead of the other, or someone punches someone in the face, or the player is a metre offside. Otherwise, it really can’t go on like this. They should get 3 looks at it in real speed. If it still isn’t “obvious” then the refs decision stands. I think it has it’s uses but the people who have come up with the rules and the interpreters are plonkers.

I still think it’s about making the right decisions. But there’s a thing called Metrology which governs accuracy in measurements.
You can’t simply compare the lines to the exact pixels when the frame rate is so low that’s impossible to stop at the precise instant of the pass, throwing the error margin to the tens of centimetres.
VAR as used by the PL is an abhorrence of both science and engineering. Not to mention no one celebrates anything anymore.

My recommendation for VAR offsides would be a time limit and no lines – call the still image with no lines and the naked eye. If it’s obvious, lines aren’t necessary.
It’s really very simple. VAR needs to be there to overturn “clear and obvious errors” only otherwise original decision should stand.
If you’re getting rulers out to measure 1mm offsides then you’ve lost the point of VAR entirely. It should only be there to prevent howlers from occuring.
When they put in VAR they silently killed the concept of being “in line”. Before, when they would show a freeze frame of a close decision no one was drawing lines on it. It was essentially built into the rules that the border between being onside and offside was a little fuzzy. For VAR to actually work they need to somehow return to that understanding.

It was obvious because was extremely commanding in the box, Emi could catch crosses, unlike Leno, and instantly the defence became more settled and secure, as a fan watching, I became more settled and secure, more confident. Every single game (in the PrL) we seem to gift the opposition a goal. It is getting farcical at this point.
But even if we look past the goal, it was yet another game were we seem unable to create anything resembling big chances. Our passing is hopelessly slow and almost always either sideways og backwards.

Some of our play was good and some bad. We dominated the game and should have won. Toothless at the front and to make it worse the most punchable player in the league scored. I’m happy with our approach play but we need to start putting our chances away. Are we missing Xhaka in midfield? Really want this season to end.

Emery had the huge luck of having Auba on fire, saving game after game. That % stat does not reflect that luck. THe 20-ish games run was not on Emery but on some players having a great moment. MA is not doing great but comparison is pointless. Emery was giraffeshit.
Anyone needing to break any type of stat will do so against Arsenal. Heard the first one before K.O knew we would lose after that. The fans outside were obviously so loud the lads couldn’t concentrate on the game.
I don’t know what to say. Leno made a blunder and there is no excusing that. I don’t even know why I want to refrain from criticizing him much. It was surely an easy save for a GK at this level. The worrying thing isn’t that I watched that game with the same level of emotional investment that I would fin is was Burnley against West Brom. What a shit show. A complete malaise. I really don’t understand how they (the players) are so careless or just don’t seem up for it, like they agreed bonuses if they made Europe, it just makes me wonder just what the issue is. No more bad apples (e.g. Ozil) to blame anymore, we just look devoid of a plan, like why the f**k do we as a team cross the ball so much when we have no players good in the air?
Completely agree although I don’t think Ozil was a bad apple. At least he was capable of the spectacular – the problem I saw he was surrounded by the distinctly ordinary. There is just no direction or depth. This time last week we were buzzing after tonking those racist bastards. We’re such an embarrassment, probably the worst run club in terms of potential in the league. Having to watch our GK run in panic to their box in the last minutes, two successive games in a row, at home, made me laugh so hard at how hopeless and ridiculous we are. I do think he may go in the summer if we (as is likely) lose to Emery in the EL.
I thought I would be more angry than I am. A single error or a single dodgy VAR decision on their own is tolerable, they just seem to stack up against us. Do we just always seem to let it happen?

I was already sufficiently at stage three last August…
The team put in a whole hearted effort. They had Everton on their back heals several times, but the end product was missing (not the least because of good defending). Maybe Martinelli should have started ahead of Nketieh. Maybe Ødegaard should have come on earlier. Not an awful performance from Arsenal, but a bitter result.
We are pretty terrible but Arteta has cost us at least 10 points this year with his bad squad selections and substitutions. For me, he gets until next January to show huge improvements. We are at 30 year lows in many categories. Also, we made an error selling Martinez. Leno is a good keeper that makes great saves but is second best to Emi in quickly getting rid of the ball, long ball distribution and commanding his area. We are going to regret that sale for years to come.
One more thing….fuck VAR 1000000 percent. It is being horribly misused in the Premier League. Either get rid of it or get rid of the idiots running it.
He needs to go at the end of the season. We won’t get past Villarreal.

Willian is better than Ozil….we aren’t comparing peak versions of either of them. Both are different degrees of awful in their current form. Man you take every opportunity to beat the club with the Ozil stick but in reality, the club were correct in seeing him off. The mistake they made was giving him a new deal.

How no one at Arsenal identified our upturn in form, defensive stability and Fa cup win at the end of last season had a lot to do with Emi. I know Leno was injured but ruthlessness like being replaced like that breeds competition. Its that type of ruthlessness in the footballing areas that have been lost while behind the scenes just spins out of control and lurches from one extreme to another.
Sadly all true. Aubameyang hitting top form got us the FA Cup but Emi saved our bacon many times and perhaps more importantly sparked alot of attacks with his fast, accurate and decisive ball distribution. It’s like playing with an extra attacker. Ederson at City is a perfect example of this.
