Welbeck comeback brought forward by three months

In unusually positive injury news, Arsene Wenger has revealed that Danny Welbeck should return to action earlier than expected.

The England striker damaged his meniscus against Man City last May, and it was feared he could face up to a year out of the game as he recovered. However, it now appears as if his absence – while still lengthy – won’t be as long as that.

“so we gained two or three months on the last medical check,” said the manager. “It could have been April.

“The good news is that they had to go in and check how his knee is healing, and if the inflammation is healing. It is healing even better than expected so we think he will be back in the New Year.

“It gives him a lift because it motivates him to accelerate the process a little bit because when you don’t know what is going on inside the knee, you are a bit uncertain. Now he knows, he can go and work hard, so that is very good news.”

Let’s hope that is the case, because Welbeck is one of the good guys, and is a very useful member of the squad. We know there’s a cynical angle you could take with this story in the current climate, but we’re not going there.

Good news is rare enough, so fingers crossed this all works out well for him.

In the post match interview after the new year when we lose and Welbeck limps off 60 minutes in.

“When you rush players back, blah blah blah, same old same old, blah”

I really am a grumpy bastard in relation to Arsenal at the moment.

High berry

I’m reminded of an old saying my granddad used to come out with from time to time when talking about business people. He’d say “they piss up your back and tell you it’s raining. ” COYG.

Clock-End Mike

Some people are never happy 🙂

janine

give arsenal fans a reason to be happy at moment

lol

This is brilliant. He will be back just in time when Giroud starts misfiring. We are winning the league, lads.

ChrisM

Wait, I take my whining back, THIS!!

janine

ha ha love it im with u ?

Flambalam

Kewl. But still buy a striker Arsene.

sanku

but he is unable find top top quality

Anonymarse

This is certainly good news but won’t be chuffed if we don’t sign anybody.

Jay Song

LANS!!

On a serious note, please please spend some money!!!!

JArghS

Ok, I will.
Might buy a cheese and pickle sandwich.

Chinaman

A WC one??

Iwobi Wan Kenobi

I suppose that depends on the quality of the pickle, you know, we are not prepared to spend £8 on an average meal deal, we are working hard to find a gourmet sandwich in the (Shoreditch) market but, you know, sandwiches are expensive as the other hipsters have a lot of money and will pay over the odds for anything with ‘authentic’ added to it’s name so we’ll see on that front.

sanku

just microwave the week old one lying the fridge and it will be LANS – Like a new sandwich ,

Cornelius P. Snuffington III

Don’t forget to factor in the resale value of the sandwich.

Sg_gooner

This is how you get wet poo on the poometer… You know diarrhea and food poisoning…

Rossi88

Arsenal- Why spend £8 on a sandwich when you can make your own, homemade for like £2. You can still make a top top quality sandwich at home. And when you eat it, you know that a lot of hard work and effort went into it, and will appreciate more.

City, Chelsea & Utd- I don’t have no time for making it, I’m hungry now!

Merlin's Panini

These comments are why I love it here.

Rage

Arsenals thought process. Hungry need a sandwich. Let’s go to the shop.

But what about the bread we bought last week that might go bad. Let’s think about this before we spend money.

Think too long and shop closes. Margarine sandwich it is. Nobody wants a margerine sandwich.

sanku

maybe we sit outside shop backdoor,
and during closing time ask,
for any unsold “quality” sandwich,

Lee

Margarine sarnie and Wenger’s transfer policy. Genius.

JArghS

UPDATE: tried to buy a sandwich in a little French delicatessen, however once they realised I was English, they tried to charge me four, five maybe ten times what it’s worth.
I am working hard to secure a sandwich before the end of my lunch break, but you know there are many people looking for sandwiches at the moment.

Third Plebeian

Why should he spend money? Welbeck is coming back earlier than expected!

That’s Wenger. Always looking for an excuse not to spend money.

Wele

Convenient.

Matt

PR?

Shinzamoby

obviously damage control for two transfer windows(summer and january 2018)because he’s not going to sign a forward

Toure Motors

Jesus so predictable. I’m expecting the negative announcement once the January transfer window closes. As always with arsenal, its the expectation that kills you

Tim

Way more than just the expectation that kills me about Arsenal.. 12 heart breaks in 12 years. Substitute the heartbreak of Ceac joining Chelski with Barca if you’d like. 2004: Wayne Bridge knocked the Invincible Arsenal out of the Champs League semi final 2006: Arsenal lose to Barcelona in the Champions League final 2006: Arsenal leave Highbury 2007: Henry joins Barcelona 2007: Eduardo breaks his leg, we throw away the game and the league 2008: Arsenal 1-5 Tottenham 2009: Lose Champs League Semi to Man Utd at the Emirates 2011: Man Utd 8-2 Arsenal 2011: Arsenal lose to Birmingham in… Read more »

Bob Davis

I really wished we signed Fabregras when we had the chance. A missed opportunity.

JArghS

Very happy for Danny.
There’s something about him that’s very likeable and I’m gutted he hasn’t featured for us all that much.

Crash Fistfight

Agree on the likeability of Danny. That bit where he says “What ya doin’? Subscribe” on Arsenal’s youtube videos always brings a smile to my face for some reason.

Third Plebeian

Likable, but not exactly prolific. As usual, Arsenal’s players get exponentially better the longer they’re out injured.

Smits Mckey

That goal against Leicester City was pretty sweet. Hadn’t he just come back from injury, too? Don’t have such a short memory, eh? Not good for the mental health.

Third Plebeian

Look, I’m not denying he scores goals once in a while, but he’s not prolific. I stand by that. As much as he offers us much-needed depth, he’s not an improvement on what we currently have.

Chris

this is preparation for the ‘we haven’t signed a striker because Danny will be back in December press release ‘ He won’t be back until March and We will not make any other significant signings. You can tell from the Wengerspeake. So sit back, relax and avoid anything football related

SB

Unlike the last many years, I don’t have Sky sports this year and I’m considering cancelling BT Sport as well.

Going to follow all the action right here.

Das pauly bear

Ah jasus sure that will be like a new signing

ani

so, no need to buy any striker.. new striker chapter closed..

sanku

its not as bad as having to play arshavin upfront..
oh wait we have sanogo…

Dial square

I had absolute faith that we would sign a striker in this transter window…..until I heard Arsene saying Wellbeck will be fit sooner than expected.

Jorin

Hold on there. I don’t want to be a cynic, and this is obviously great news if true. But could it be just the kind of PR machinery fuelled media spin from Arsenal to calm down fans who are quite vocal about wanting a new striker.

This ultimately gives the club a reason to not buy a striker. I really like Welbeck, but I just feel the timing of this news from the club is suspicious.

emob

Yes, with good reason. The PR department has been very conscious of in their efforts of appeasing the fans with their “leaks” through Ornstein and the interviews of Gazidis and Wenger. (It’s jsut that they’re pretty bad at their job). So it’s hard to take both the Gabriel and Danny annoncements seriously.

Bergkamp 3:16

I couldn’t agree more. I would even go as far as saying it’s a message to the clubs from whom we may be eyeing their strikers, almost quelling our ‘desperation’ in the attempt to get a better deal. These days it’s very hard to believe what they churn out from within the club. A fit Welbeck is a welcome addition but doesn’t excuse the fact we need a new striker.

sanku

is it to tell other clubs we are not desperate for striker so that they lower their prices ?

ac

If Gabriel and Welbeck weren’t injured, Arsene wouldn’t even consider another signing. I would put my house on it.

enoupee

Yeah. Great news. It’s pitty he’s gonna have a 3 months setback, so..

Frank

Just in time for the january transfer window. How convenient 😉 But I like Welbeck, could become a complete forward, but need to work on his finishing.

Anyway I think we usually play better and look more dangerous with Welbeck up top. It’s just seems more dynamic and fluent in attack.

However spend 150mill on Lewandowski and let get this title challenge back on track. We are literally saving ourselves broke right now.

sanku

unlikely, I guess its clear we had no target other than vardy

Kaine

Sometimes I just want to explode in anger at the scenario in arsenal then I remember that there is a 90% chance this is Wenger last season and I calm down a wee bit. Whatever happens this season, first or last, what is plain for all to see is that diminishing returns has set in. It’s a fact of life. In my 19yrs as a fan I have known only Wenger, he has become too predictable to fans and other clubs. That’s plain to see on the pitch. We do need to change a lot at the club, and it’s… Read more »

sanku

too soon bro :p
wait for a self destructive meltdown as we lose to relegation threatened clubs
then re-post it

Petit's Handbag

Just Bullshit, sorry I don’t believe a word of this. This is a message to try appease fans who won’t be getting a new forward because he failed for the fourth Summer in a row of delivering one. Not good enough and I’m sure 95% of Arsenal fans agree.

emob

Very convenient, isn’t it?

Bob Davis

The timing of it suggests so. Looks like we won’t be signing a forward. This could be the season where we finish outside of the top 4.

Delford Magaya

The idea for Wenger is not to buy a striker, he does that every year, I have never ever seen an arrogant coach in my life, he full of bullshit. Every year he has so many excuse and he do not even feel shy of his attitude. He is so pathetic in his thinking.

Hereford gooner

I expect a further update the day after the transfer window closes that will reaffirm that his knee has now exploded and the resulting shrapnel has injured jack wilshire for 9 years

Fabulous

Still shouldn’t stop our striker search. Especially if you factor in the amount of time for Welbeck to gain fitness again.

Jim Gordon

Wengerspeak for , we won’t bother with another striker then, sure welbecks back in new year.

Simon

That’s such great news, now we don’t need to sign a striker. ?

TH

Just fucking imagine falling for this shit again.

None of us are dumb enough to swallow it, right?

Indian Gooner

Please don’t rush him back and get him injured yet again. And don’t tell me this is yet another ploy by Arsene to distract us with this piece of information and get away without signing a striker. I remember him doing the same thing last season while Welbeck was injured. Please Arsene, that would get way too ugly this time around if you are going to be doing the same thing.
Leave after this season with as much respect as possible because you deserve it.
Please don’t make it ugly for everyone involved with Arsenal with all your tantrums.

Indian Gooner

The worst part is, we all watch and love this sport because it gives us happiness.
But whatever is happening with Arsenal at the moment is just getting on my nerves and I am getting to a point where I could literally loose it.
Best way out for me from this torture I believe is to get myself somehow distracted from watching the PL this season if it is going to continue this way.

ScotchEggsRules

Good news for us and Danny. He’s a likeable lad.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe I’m the only one who believes Wenger will see this as an excuse to not buy.

ProGunnersLobby

Hope this is not posturing by Wenger for Arsenal to seem less desperate in transfer negotiations. In anycase, you can’t expect Welbeck to come back from a lengthy injury and start banging goals in. He is still effectively out for the season

Mark

I am afraid this news will make Wenger think that we don’t need a new striker now.

Lord Bendtner

Now if Mertrsackers comeback could also be preponed (yes, it is a word), then we are looking at a full squad going into this season. And lets not forget the Coq can play CB and the Joel can play ST. So we seem to be overwhelmed in all the positions.

‘whispers SOS under breath’

Ox Sans Box

Your wordplay just gave me a poner.

heihaci

will be rushed back and injured again

heihaci

I like Wele but i wish he was less injury prone and more clinical

Alexstratz

The optimist in me says releasing this info is strategy to lower the price of whatever striker we may be chasing. The pessimist says Wenger is counting on Welbeck as a new signing.

Jonny Bravo

Excellent timing! Just a pity they weren’t as forthright or transparent when his injury was covered up until after the window was closed last year.

goldjosef

A ploy by Arsene not to get a striker this summer. I’m sure he’ll simply tell us in January that there’s a setback.

Injury Crisis FC

I think the Premier League is a ponzi scheme

Possession

Ok….we’re not adding to the squad unless Real want to oust Benzema on the last day of the transfer window or something similar.

How about spending at least some money on making the bars inside the stadium for the plebs like myself at least in some way appealing. They are so drab, unappealing and more akin to the inside of an aircraft hanger. Will give Ivan and Dick something to do…..

Crash Fistfight

Have they sorted out the rusty speakers hanging from the stadium roof yet?

Tot

By buying early and investing in the squad pre euros we could have bought both lacazzette and mustafi in at the less figures quoted now. As later on the higuain and pogba deals seemed to inflate prices two fold….so we could have got both deals done for £60 mill.. Now wenger the poor sod is all over the place not knowing who to buy or even a shortlist seems so much like a cowboy job and typical wenger summer dithering.. wer as now lacazzette and mustafi would have both been settled and comfortable in the squad full of confidence and… Read more »

Kafkush

I can’t help but feel this is a lie. I’ve lost faith in the statements they make and the timing is just too suspicious.
Welbeck is a good guy. He won’t score us the goals to win the league though. Not this year.

craszy gunner

Its another con arsene is looking for a way to avoid spending money on a striker and again trying to manage expectation from fans!..

Stop always trying to manage the fans and spend more time managing the team and maybe we may get some success

Just watch what will happen in november he will have another setback ..then a minor setback in february and then finally make a comeback around april!

Where have we heard that before…same ole tricks..

Hunter

This story is unlikely enough as it is but the fact that Wenger is the one who said it tells me it’s bullshit.

Gd10

Any excuse not to spend money aye Arsenal.

You just know if wenger, gazidis and kronke go to a bar they don’t even get a drink as they all expect each other to pay for them.

Bob Davis

Every time one of them pulls a bank note the Queen blinks!

JollyTwatbag

Im struggling to believe anything the club says after last years injury update right after the window closed(re.Welbeck,Wilshere). I used to love my club and backed them all the way. Now i want to punch them in the face. Right in the fucking face.

Ritch

…and while we wait for Arsene to sign a big name before the close of transfer window, he has just signed a player in the January transfer window… Such a trick…

dan

it shows just how poisoned the relationship is between the club and the fans that so many people on here suspect that this story is just spin to justify not buying another striker

Jimbo1

This would only have been good news had it happened after the end of the transfer window. Wenger will now try to make do till Welbeck is back and avoid splashing out on a new striker. Wenger out!

DCHGooner

Leave it to Arsenal fans to take good news like this and spin it into a negative. It genuinely sounds as if most of you would have preferred Welbeck’s recovery to have been delayed just to push Wenger into buying a striker.

I, for one, and happy for Danny.

siserio

If you’re a true arsenal fan, you’ll read between the lines. We’ve been tricked one time, too many and I’m sure this is equally a trick.I’m not getting deceived again.

George

I don’t want to hear. Not a bit.

We never get the length of time out correct and I just don’t want to hear it in this case as if it will happen or is reason to put other stuff on hold, etc.

Even if he came back then, got fit and played, someone else will have gone down in the meantime.

Do not want to hear it.
