Report: Juve closing in on Ramsey deal

According to various reports, Juventus are looking like Aaron Ramsey’s most likely destination when he becomes a free agent in the summer.

The 27-year-old will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from 1 January and is understood to be weighing up his options with a view to making a decision sooner rather than later. AC Milan, Inter and Bayern Munich have also been tipped as suitors.

Arsenal had initially wanted the Wales international to extend his contract at the Emirates but following the departures of Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis, the club changed their mind.

It’s not clear what role Unai Emery played in the decision, but the Spaniard has been more than happy to mould his midfield around new boys Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka, who signed a new deal in the summer.

That Rambo, who was made one of the club’s vice-captains in August, was asking for wages on a par with January signings Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang probably didn’t help his cause.

While Arsenal would be forgiven for trying to cash in on the three-time FA Cup winner when the transfer window in nine days time, the player has made it clear he’s willing to see out the season in London.

If Ramsey does make his way to Turin, he’ll be following in the footsteps of Liam Brady and Patrick Vieira and to a lesser extent, Armand Traore, Nicklas Bendtner (both on loan) and Stephy Mavididi.

If true I’m very happy for him and the fact that he’s not joining a prem rival.

The whole thing is still odd though. Seems as if we’ve fluffed about £40m of potential transfer kitty for no apparent reason. Which is either a very decent winger or half a world class centre back.

Irrational Gunner

Spot on for paragraph 2. We let him dawdle in signing a new contract well past a sell by date, and now here we are. Have the feeling that “player power” in negotiations will become a relic of the past at Arsenal.

Bob's Mexican Cousin

Maybe a message to other players trying to hold the club for ransom on their last year?

Lack of Perspective

Holding will be world class and is 2mil.

Lord Bendnter

Does the contract include “must pass to Ronaldo” as a clause?

Faisal Narrage

Only if it’s a look-away backheel.

TOGooner

Juventus would probably be a great decision for Ramsey. Risky by Arsenal letting him go like that. I think he will absolutely thrive there. Although, if Mikh and Ozil don’t step up in the second half of this season, this play by our transfer guys will seem rather stupid

Badaab

Doubt the ‘transfer guys’ had much say in this considering the cash layout that Ramsey is reported to have asked for- its likely been decided by KSE.

ebouerules

What is it rumoured that he asked for?

Danger Mouse

The same wages as Mhkitarian. Ramsey’s a far better player in my book. Think it’s a shame he’s going. A bit like when Schezney was allowed to leave, I can’t help but think this is a mistake particularly if Rambo was happy in the end to stay.

Malaysian Gooner

You can’t look at it from a stance of who is better, Mkhi or Ramsey. In reality, neither probably fit what Emery is looking for. You have to compare his 180k per week demand with what his replacement’s wages would be.

Ramsey will likely not be the only high earner to leave the club this summer to fund Emery’s overhaul. Ozil and Mkhi will likely also leave along with those out of contract (Cech, Monreal, Welbeck Lichtsteiner). Although I personally hope Monreal and Cech extend their contracts.

Faisal Narrage

Why would it have been decided by KSE and not by the likes of our Head of Football and Head of Commercial? You know, the people hired to make such a decision?

Deano

Best of luck to him. Shouldn’t allow a player to their contract down anywhere less than 18 months remaining. Hopefully now Ivan has gone that will be the last time.

Giuseppe Hovno

Fair enough, I wish the best to him, shame we can’t cash in on him but he’s done his part this season so far. Onwards and upwards for Unai Emery’s The Arsenal! I feel great things lie ahead for us

Hurensohn

Sounds like Ramsey just reminding everyone his contract is running down to me. Can’t see him going to Italy.

Laca-Sead

Agreed. Especially not Juventus. Milan maybe

santori

As I mentioned before, the best option for us is to keep Ramsey and Ozil and sell Mhkitaryan. The Armenian has been OK and a decent player but what not we needed for the team last January and into this season. Mslintat and company panicked with the imminent departure of Alexis and Ozil looming last year. Instead of going in for Mahrez before City came in to raise his price late on in window, we managed to put off (a lower offer admittedly) for the same City who later needed a winger, and lay ourselves prey to the only bidder… Read more »

Goonerink

A well thought out and articulated point.
HOWEVER, your fundamental basis is flawed.
Ramsey is a box to box attacking midfielder.
Ozil is a playmaking attacking midfielder.
Mhki is a play making wide midfielder.

Granted they share roles/positions, but they don’t offer us the same things.

Martin

You are forgetting Szczesny too

Amusa

You will always be an Arsenal hero if not a Legend!
Even though 2 FA cup winning goals and one of them against Chelsea makes him a Legend in my eyes.
Farewell Rambo this makes me sad.

Cagooner

Me too. But not done deal yet. Many a slip twixt cup and lip…..

Shank

How about a move Burnley, where Sean can teach him to kick people for a living

Mayor McCheese

THINK OF THE CHILDREN

Anonymarse

Sean Duche is the new Tony Pulis

TeeCee

Well, apart from the fact he looks more like an inflamed scrotum than an insane goblin of course.

Cagooner

You mean “ Sean Duche, the new Tony Pubis”. ?

santori

May play Ramsey against BHA. Elneny was messy (as predictable) against Burnley getting fleeced several times. Of course, he can do no wrong to some fans , the same lot who like to pick holes at say Mustafi and then stay quiet when the German was no where to blame for the two recent defeats. Potentially we could have Ramsey in a deeper role with Guendouzi and then have Torreira come on and push Ramsey further forward (in his better role) if need be. If we go triangle with either Auba or Laca on apex, then Iwobi and Mhki will… Read more »

I hope Laca doesn’t channel his anger into red cards.

If you were the Arsenal manager the press conferences would go on forever and eventually all the journalists would just leave the room and you would be talking to nobody.

Papasliim

Bad line up

Andre

Best of luck to him. And well done for staying classy and professional during what was an awkward turn of events.

Rich

He’s alongside Bellerin+Torreira as my current favourite player, but if we’re certain about not offering him a new deal? Then I’d rather we sold him in Jan, even if that meant him joining a rival

SharpasFc

You know you don’t mean that! Ramsey absolutely needs to go abroad. He may be inconsistent but he’s a really good player. I could imagine him playing with the likes of Ronaldo and Dybala.

Devlin

Juve seem to be looking for young central midfielders. The y also took Emre Can from Liverpool on a free transfer last season, this season they are looking likely to repeat the same trick. Ramsey could have a role to play because they have most positions covered except for Matuidi’s role. He will have to cover for Cristiano’s lack of defensive effort on the left, but he will also have freedom to run into the box freely because he will have two midfielders covering for him when he does. He will not play as much though, or get paid what… Read more »

Irrational Gunner

Would Bayern Munich be a better choice for him if they called? Seems like they could use more attacking thorough the middle and the league seems more wide open than Serie A.

Michael Bolton Wanderers

Bad business by us, but wish him all the best. If he goes abroad of course

David C

If you were completely neutral, you’d have to say that Ramsey is: fantastic on his day, inconsistent, and injury prone.

I will miss him and am thankful for the memories, but I trust in our transfer dudes to find a replacement.

Fatgooner

It’ll be sad to see him go but let’s be honest: it’s not a disaster. At the moment Ramsey is a useful squad player but no more. I can’t see him making a big splash in Italy or anywhere else for that matter. He was definitely not worth the 250k a week he was demanding. And we’re not exactly short of attacking midfielders. I wish him well but he’ll soon be forgotten. Apart from the Spuds win it was a very good weekend. We overcame a feisty Burnley side in a lively lunchtime match yesterday. Then the Chavs suffered a… Read more »

Benriz

I agree, Fats. I’ll always like the guy and who could forget those FA cup goals!? But, it’s not really the end of the world that he’s going if you look at the rest of the squad and it has been a good weekend. We can make top 4, maybe even better, but defending has to tighten up. Can we do that with current personnel? I’m honestly not sure and I’m not hugely confident in the likelihood of any signings. That’s the main thing I’m anxious about right now.

BigStick

I’d rather we moved Mkhi on and kept Ramsey. I know Aaron is always an injury worry, but he’s been a great servant of the club and almost always comes up big for us in huge games. When he’s in top form, he’s easily up there with some of the greatest players around. I know that isn’t a popular opinion, but I think it’s accurate.

Dholio

Let’s be honest. An upgrade on both Rambo & Mkhi would be most welcome

Fatgooner

Dead right. Mkhitaryan has been a poor signing. Apparently, he’s on very good money but the performances have been very average. I wouldn’t mind seeing him moved on in the summer. We can do much better than him.

Hi-brid

Sad to read this, but good luck to him.

KongoKim

not that he’s not useful but wish he’d be gone already. Fucking drama sagas.

never get trust inna relationship….thanks arsene!

Nick

I’ll drive him to the airport. Good riddance, mate.

Berlingoon

I’d drive supporters like you to the airport.

baz00r

Just share an Uber

Xman

Ramsey being allowed to leave for nothing it’s a logical outcome for Arsenal. Ramsey is better than other player options and giving him a raise is more logical than playing another than hasn’t given most of his playing career to the club. The logical decision would be to sell the player that doesn’t have the right love for the club and can still be sold for a good price and reduce salary. If keeping Ramsey isn’t the outcome I’ll need to make my own decisions about supporting a club that doesn’t support its players. Maybe those making this decision also… Read more »

Is that….is that you Ramsey?

It’s somehow interesting to see ex arsenal players in other shirts too!

”Following the departures of Ivan Gazidis and Arsene Wenger, the club changed their mind” – ummm, ok?

La Defense

Meaning teacher’s pets no longer welcome.

PTAFC

Helped changed the game against spurs when played in his best position which he very rarely has been since joining us – great for Wales as he had a well organised defence behind him not not like the shambles we’ve had to put with for over a decade. Hardly used since the above game – when we thought we’d won the champions league but look at both clubs since! Drifted away now sorry, far better player – and done more for this club than ozil, mikhi, iwobi, xhaka etc will ever do. Good luck Ramsey, hope you get a great… Read more »
