Report: Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa

It was a glorious day for Arsenal as we became the most successful team in FA Cup history with a comfortable win over Aston Villa. The 4-0 victory came thanks to goals from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud, and the scoreline was in keeping with Arsenal’s dominance throughout the game. Cazorla and Ozil were magestic in the middle of the park, Sanchez and Walcott caused constant problems to Villa’s defence, and the defence dealt with anything thrown at them.

Arsenal: Szczesny; Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal; Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey, Ozil, Alexis; Walcott

Aston Villa: Given; Hutton, Vlaar, Okore, Richardson; Westwood, Delph, Cleverley; Grealish, N’Zogbia, Benteke.

After a week of team selection debate amongst the Arsenal fanbase, Arsene put an end to the deliberation, keeping faith with his cup ‘keeper by naming Szczesny in goal, while Walcott was preferred to Giroud in attack after his impressive hattrick last week. Theo made a telling contribution and the big Pole barely had anything to do.

Arsenal controlled possession from the start, being careful not to repeat the mistakes of a year ago that saw us two goals down in the early stages. In the 8th minute we seriously threatened for the first time when Cazorla found space in the box, but was unable to find Walcott at the far post with a dangerous cross. From a corner that followed shortly after, Koscielny had a free header but missed the target when he perhaps should have made more of it.

The first real chance fell to Koscielny in the 15th minute, with the Frenchman found six yards out by a dinked Alexis cross, but Shay Given was equal to the powerful headed effort that was aimed too close to the goalkeeper.

Moments later Ramsey was found at the near post after good work by Bellerin down Villa’s left hand side, but his prodded effort rolled just wide. Arsenal were on top but not making opportunities count.

The Welshman came close again soon after, when good work from Ozil found Ramsey in the box. He was lucky to control the ball into space with a ricochet off a Villa defender, but his poked shot sailed over the bar when he really should have opened the scoring.

Arsenal’s dominance continued, and after neat interplay between Monreal, Cazorla and Ozil, Walcott was presented with an open goal a few yards out, but a goal line block from Kieran Richardson kept the scoreline blank.

The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute. Walcott swapped positions with Sanchez and moved out wide left, and the Englishman was found by a pinpoint crossfield pass from Coquelin. Theo fed Monreal down his outside, and the Spaniard’s cross went deep to Alexis, who nodded the ball back across goal into space. Walcott had followed the cross in, and was quickest to react, thumping home a powerful left footed volley past Shay Given. The Irishman was given no chance, and it was a relief to score before half time given the team’s profligacy in front of goal up to that point.

Whatever words of encouragement were yelled at the Villa players by Tim Sherwood at half time didn’t have much of an impact on the pattern of play, as Ozil and man of the match Cazorla continued to dictate the pace of the game.

It didn’t take long before Arsenal’s advantage was doubled, when player of the season Alexis Sanchez thundered in one of the great FA Cup final goals. The Chilean picked the ball up 25 yards out from goal, forged some space for himself, and smashed an unstoppable strike that moved in the air and left Shay Given grasping at nothing as the ball clipped off the crossbar on it’s way into the net.

Arsenal were rampant at the start of the second half, with a string of chances for the likes of Ramsey, Walcott and Cazorla keeping Given busy in the Villa goal.

Tim Sherwood’s side had little in response, and it was 3-0 shortly after the hour mark. Walcott was unable to get a clean shot away when put clear through on goal by Ozil, but from a corner moments later the tallest man on the pitch was left unmarked six yards out and allowed to score the third. Per Mertesacker’s shouldery finish left the yellow sea of Arsenal fans in raptures, and the game looked done and dusted with 30 minutes left to go.

We were content to keep possession and keep Villa at arms length, forging the odd half chance. Walcott should have had his second of the day when put clear through with 15 minutes remaining, but his attempt on goal was skewed well wide. He was replaced moments later by Olivier Giroud, with Jack Wilshere also coming on to replace the superb Ozil.

There was a moment of drama in the 80th minute when a surging Gabriel Agbonlahor was taken down by Coquelin on his way into the Arsenal box. In real time it looked like a penalty, on reflection it was probably a free kick on the edge of the area, but referee Jon Moss waved play on. Villa were claiming for a penalty again shorly after when Jack Grealish was pulled down in the box by Hector Bellerin, but again Moss had no interest, much to Sherwood’s chagrin. There was merit in both appeals but in the grand scheme of things it made little difference.

The cherry on top was added when Giroud tapped in at the near post from an Oxlade-Chamberlain cross, and it capped a fantastic performance by the team. This game was a joy to watch in comparison to recent nervy trips to Wembley, with our goal never under any real threat.

Arsene goes level with George Ramsey as the most successful manager in the competitions history. We went nine years without a trophy, but we’ve now lifted the FA Cup twice in twelve months, and it feels pretty great.

12 FA cup wins for Arsenal FC, 6 for The Proffesor. Congrats to our boys and all the fans. Great season, already looking for the next one. Cheer up Timmy, your favorite team won

That felt outstandingly good. I screamed in delight multiple times, for each of the goals. Leave aside our hammering of Villa, our back to back FA cup victories, Wenger becoming the most successful FA cup manager of all time, and Arsenal becoming the most successful team of all time. The best part was the misery on the commentators voices and the live text summary – the fact that Arsenal dominated, the fact that the big match players showed up, and you know what, while Ozil didn’t get a goal or an assist, he was a freaking genius. Stick to your… Read more »

Sure some people are deluded. All the pundits thought the arsenal performance was awesome.

Only shearer said we need 2 world class signings to win the league which is pretty much what every arsenal fan thinks too.

After scoring his goal Mertesacker looking faster than Bellarin!

I’m surprised BFG managed to leap for that goal considering he had the whole weight of Benteke in his back pocket.

Mertesacker was a monster today. Incredible performance.

Coq was massive.

gordy

They all were. Ramsey fought and fought, Bellerin and Monreal were fantastic, Alixis scored one of the great FA Cup goals, Kos was brilliant, the subs were amazing, oh and Ozil was out of this world and Cazorla was man of the match. The best FA cup win I can remember, and I was there when Charlie smashed the ball straight at me to win the first double.

Gun

Monrealis really good. Left wing is safe when he is playing.

Fabulous

When Giroud scored I realized that will be his 2nd trophy in as many years with Arsenal. Knowing our previous striker left to win “trophies” elsewhere, it’s bloody ironic we already have more than him. And I freaking love it!!! Let’s win more, starting by beating Chelsea in the shield.

DR

He has been here for 3 years. Won the community shield. So that makes it 3 in as many years. He left Arsenal to be in a team that is shittier than Arsenal ‘was’ for sometime. What a stupid cunt.

Jijo

Last season I noticed that spurs don’t appear in our rear view mirror anymore. But now I see them. Guess what? We just lapped them!

Excellent win. Exciting times ahead.!!

My jaw is still hanging open from that Alexis goal.

kaius

It was even better struck than his goal vs Liverpool. When will dopey commentators stop immediately assuming his howitzers have been deflected?

David C

Yeah, I’m very happy the commentators didn’t dare blame it on a goalkeeper error to take the shine off. That was SMASHED into the net! What a strike.

mersons coke dealer

Oh but they did! Couldn’t believe it. Not one of those cunts credited him for the goal after the game on BT. Mcmanaman & Paul Scholes said it was a goalkeeping error and that it’s not one of the great FA cup final goals… bizarre scenes…

enjoy the night, i’m *boilked*

I guess I had different commentators in North America.

Thierry Bergkamp

Shame on you for watching BT.

Where is Rosicky?????

Xxxrob

Such a dominant and complete performance. Everyone stood up today. All villa had was a whipped in cross for benteke and we broke our backs to stop those crosses. Incredible performance
It’s 448am here, I’ve had half a case of coronas.. Bout to smash the other half. UP THE ARSE

The second goal was a wonder strike by Alexis! What a SCREAMER that was!!!

The Coq was MOM today by a country mile.

The whole team was MOM. I can’t remember a game where every single player on the team played brilliantly like that.

Seeing them perform with such fluidity and actually won in the end is pure joy
Aaah, what a great feeling

Stevie Gerrard… is that you?

For me too! Wish I could have been there again.

David

Well played. dominant from start to end, not underrating them and playing this as it was, a final. Ozil was magnificent, Sanchez was awesome, nice goal by walcott, Coquelin outstanding and relentless. Overtaking manure as the most winning team of the FA cup feel oh sooo good. now lets just reinforce this team, cuz we have a good base but tired of always lacking that little bit to win the league, cuz we can if we reinforce well.

Mark

Was strange not to see Rosicky there, but I didn’t see Debuchy or Welbeck either (though might have missed them). Much easier watching this year’s match than the one last year and much more enjoyable even if it was kind of a boring match after we got the 2nd goal. Was nice to see Wenger go with the hot hand in Walcott and that did really open things up for us. Is it just me or when Giroud comes in as a sub for Walcott or Welbeck he looks as slow as a turtle (I know the black shoes don’t… Read more »

Boring???? BORING?!?!?!
I guess complete and utter domination while playing beautifully is not for everyone.

Excellent all around! So nice to not be in turmoil the entire match! Onward and upward, boys! COYG!!!

Gooneropolis

Class performance. Beautiful goals. FA Cup record holders.

Enjoy the day out, Gooners. Time to enjoy the spoils.

Hi-brid

I bloody love Arsenal.

Canuck Gunner

Fantastic team performance – everyone played their part and got the deserved victory! What a fantastic finish to the season – can hardly wait for next season to begin!

Merson's grin

Ozil was outstanding. MoM for me. The rest were just brilliant.

Jijo

Number of chances he makes..and how effortless he makes them look.. Unbelievable ..

AN other

I have been dreaming out this scoreline and Walcott and Sanchez scoring in those dreams. I am so happy that Wenger picked up Walcott over Giroud and Szchesny over Ospina. His decisions are vindicated.

I am also glad Sherwood is brought down to earth. I am not sure why he is getting bigged up time and again by media. All through the week, I thought Villa will be too indiscipline to sit back, they will have a go which played into Arsenal’s hands.

Onwards and upwards.

pinocchio

12 games unbeaten in the FA Cup!!!!
What a beautiful game to watch for the Gunners Fans all around the world.
Total domination
Let’s get 18 games unbeaten for the next season!!!

shokim

Congratulations to The Arsenal on winning an historic 12th FA Cup! It was great seeing Wenger breaking into smiles!

And what a wonder strike by Alexis! What a SCREAMER of a goal!!!

Chuck

It sure is nice way to end the season we should just win this every year

Cazorla'swrongfoot

Or we could even better the end of our season by winning the CL Final
Just sayin!

OOzil

that game was just too comfortable. damn! could get used to such finals 🙂

Jijo

Now I kind of realize what you have been missing throughout those empty years after seeing us winning many in the previous years. Because this is only the second time I am seeing us winning a trophy and I will be very sad if we don’t win again. I waited 8 long years after becoming a serious follower to see us lift a trophy last year. It feels great. I am convinced that Wenger is on the verge of completing another special team. Last piece of the puzzle is gonna arrive in this transfer window.! Thank you Wenger for giving… Read more »

Giroud has to trademark that goal..only he seems to score it!! Gooonerssss!!

naijagooner

Arsene Wenger has made the FA cup his bitch!!! I hope in his press conference, he says something like: ‘and that is how to win a trophy with style’ then drops the metaphoric mic. What a performance, everyone was superb, even the subs, no one should get less than 7.5/10 for performance. Looking forward to a treble next season (oh snap, I forgot about the community shield).

Paul

A perfect performance! Proud of you….

Fatgooner

Best performance of the season… we saved the best til last.. we began the season winning at Wembley and ended the season winning at Wembley… Ozil, Sanchez and Cazorla all brilliant.. but Sanchez was the MOTM – wrong Danny Murphy… Sanchez goal best ever in a Cup Final… BBC so biased: apparently we lost because Villa didn’t turn up – bollocks… nice to be able to just sit there and enjoy it – after 10 minutes it was obvious that we were gonna win… 3 players in the summer and we might win the title…

CB

COYFats.

Paul

Take a breath Fats and stop worrying about next summer…

CB

And the %age increase on our existing good players is?

Funky Gooner

I heard that dullard Alan Shearer make the same ‘3 more players’ statement. Which 3? And which three do you replace? Wilshire, Ramsey, Walcott and Ox. Four previous young starlets that are beginning to enter there prime. Already, with the world class additions of the past two seasons, they are all not in the first 11 in there fav positions. If we keep on adding, we could dimish the potential of our British core who have stuck with us through the whole new stadium building period when others looked for greener pastures. I must say I am torn.

CB

Let Wenger decide. Take the summer off and refresh.

Fatgooner

You’re right about those young players, but the problem is the players we DON’T have. We need a top-quality goalkeeper; we need another quality defensive midfielder (Coq can’t play every game); and most of all we need a world-class striker: we would have killed today’s game at by half-time if we had had one.

I’m as euphoric as every other Gooner right now, but I’m realistic: we finished 12 points behind Chelsea. To close the gap we must improve in those weak positions.

Dan Man

You are right. We’ve also seen this season what competition does to the squad, Coq could improve a lot if he’s competing, and I’m pretty sure Flamini’s contract won’t be renewed.

El blondo

You are a cunt fatty. Deal with it

CB

It takes one, as they say.

Argue the issues, don’t attack the Arsenal fan. If he, or anyone, gets things wrong point those things out.

ckZA

Good old Arsenal,
Good old Arsenal,
we’re proud to say that name.
And while we sing this song,
we’ll win the game.

Next up: moroniho blood. I want them cut down next season. Ruthlessly.
