Fears for Timber as Arsenal assess knee scans

There are concerns that Jurrien Timber could be facing a long spell on the sidelines with reports circulating that he suffered a serious knee injury during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

The defender required medical treatment just before half time following a collision with Brennan Johnson but reappeared after the break hoping to run off the issue. He lasted just five minutes before going down again under minimal pressure and was replaced by Takehiro Tomiyasu.

After the match, Mikel Arteta said: “The physios, the doctors, they looked at him and they were happy to continue and him as well. But straight away in the second half, the first action, he made a movement and it was a bit funny. We took him straight after out and now we have to assess him and see what he has.”

Those assessments are thought to be ongoing but there has been talk of either an ACL injury or meniscus damage. If either of those rumours prove correct it would undoubtedly mean surgery and months of rehab, so we desperately hope not.

Signed from Ajax for £38.5 million, the Holland international produced very promising performances in pre-season and has been earmarked to provide competition to both Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko at full-back.

UPDATE

Dutch journalist Mike Verweij reports it’s an ACL for Jurrien 🙁

Get well soon bro…… come back stronger!!

Lordelpus

Ah, f**k !

FeckinBollix

Ah shit! He looked class in pre-season, hope he comes back soon.

Habibi

I just had my 2nd ACL + meniscus reconstruction last week (first one was on my other leg 5 years back). He must be very disappointed. Hope he comes back before the end of this season (less probable thou).

J2W

Sounds horrific. Get well soon!

Jer

They would have known right away if ligament was damaged, so likely it’s the cartilage. Not good

MTGooner

We hope it’s just the cartilage as meniscus tears are usually fixable and have a short recovery time by comparison to ACL injuries.

Arun

Damn. So sad for him. Hope it’s not ACL. For me he was the most exciting of the new bunch. And he seemed so happy to be here. Great well soon!

Ebo

Devaatating either way but ACL isn’t an injury, it’s a ligament. We need specific info if it’s a complete or only partial tear of the ligament as that will make a massive difference… if it’s just a partial tear he might very well still contribute for us this season, fingers crossed and hands in prayer position 🙏

BillyKrystal

So fucking deflating, he was set to be breakout signing in the PL not just for us! Who knows maybe it’s a lucky break and no surgery. At least Tomi looked very good there but that was just Forest. Get well soon Zimky and stay well!!!!!!!!

Man Manny

Damn! Arsenal’s mythical curse strikes again? I pray not. Get well soon, Timber.
To think that the tackle was not even a foul let alone a bookable offence.

ArseblogIntrovert

Fingers double crossed

Leon

Typical piss poor player management by Arsenal.
Absolute fucking piss poor.
Had they taken him off at half time. Had their incompetent “doctor” done his job properly and told him to be substituted at half time we wouldn’t have a £40 million player out on the sidelines for months.
Honestly.
We are right fucking back to square one.
Useless cunt of a fucking doctor..

Derrick Cigar

Now tell us what you really think.

Sean

People may not like this kind of talk because of the positivity and good-will we feel towards the club at the moment, but should these reports be true then we have every right to be pissed off here and we can’t not address it. Whoever decided to send Timber back out may well have given us a significant problem to navigate just 45 minutes into a new season- with our most intense schedule in years. We could once again find ourselves a Saliba injury away from looking significantly weaker in defence, after all the hard work done to rectify that… Read more »

89 again

I’d wager that their expertise and judgement at the time outweighs yours in every respect except hindsight. They probably dont go around calling people cunts until they’ve got all the facts too, maybe not even then.

Kevin Albone

Maybe you should calm down. We only have paper talk so we don’t yet know the extent of the problem. Also it might be entirely separate from the first half injury. Unlikely I agree but possible.

Heavenly Chapecoense

I won’t believe until it is confirmed by Skysports…lol

IamsterdamGooner

I agree with the sentiment, not the wording. I assume that’s where the thumbs down come from?!
Because at 2-0 up, we play once a week for now, top replacement on the ready in Tommy… I mean 🤷🏾‍♂️ sure it could also NOT have happened, but it did and it sucks. Lessons not learned it seems, what’s the point of a strong bench? And if the player says he’s fine, he must be overruled in some cases. Sit down Timber, no risks, Tommy you’re in!

Fenko

You sounds like a teenager with entitlement syndrome.

Leon

No – just someone a little bit annoyed by something that could so have easily been presented that’s all – apologies for the expressive language as well I don’t ever go that far but still

Fenko

I understand you. And you are right to be angry. I was too. It was an accident. The player was treated and he completed the first half. He was further assessed at the interval to determine if he could continue. They passed him fit to continue and the players was feeling good too to continue. It doesn’t make the medical team incompetent. They wouldn’t risk his health in the first game of the season. It is unfortunate that he aggravated the injury. We just need to give him the support he and the medical team need to bring him back… Read more »

Leon

Let’s be positive about it then – player signed for close to £40 million played 45 minutes of competitive football for us at almost £1 million per minute now has an injury that retires many players – or at least has such as effect on them that they never come back the player they were – not that we had a chance to see him become any kind of player at Arsenal and if it is an ACL rupture we never will. All down to an incompetent medical team not making the correct decision. Do you see such incompetence at… Read more »

Rick_Sanchez

I really don’t get the downvotes on this one. We don’t have all the information and most of us are not trained medical experts. Hence I do not want to evaluate what has been done during the game. But man, that injury bloody sucks. Timber had everything and showed so much promise. And apart from that, when looking at our defense, we’re actually back to square one. I’m not sure if Tomi could deputise for Saliba if, god forbids, something happens to him. Guess we’ll see. So that leaves us with White (RB, CB), Tomi (RB, CB, LB) Saliba (CB),… Read more »

Rick_Sanchez

Sorry, I forgot Kiwior. But still, quality depth is lacking because of the injury.

Fezec

I think the downvotes are because the guy is going off at the club doctors when he likely knows as much about physiotherapy, anatomy and physiology as I know about rocket science.

I find it impossible to believe the doctors at a multimillion pound organisation looking after a multimillion pound asset are completely incompetent.

If they are I’m sure there will be consequences. Cunting them off on the internet without any actual facts is poor form.

Another Paul

Well said.

timorous me

Nice work exaggerating the fee to artificially make the club look even worse. What’s the agenda here, man? Just really upset and trying to bring everyone else down with you?

I know in life we sometimes can find comfort in identifying a culprit or an explanation. But the truth is, sometimes shit just happens, and we’ve got to accept it and move on as best as possible. I get it, I loved Timber and was already thinking of getting his name on the 3rd kit, but I don’t see the point of such negative thinking.

Ashburton Grove

Absolutely terrible that this has happened, he’s looked good so far. Ridiculous luck really but no one could have known what would happen, he could have easily ran off the knock. As brutal as it is we’re not the only ones suffering, Real Madrid have just lost two massive players, Courtois and Militao, to ACL’s in the space of a couple of days. We need a full fit squad now so I wouldn’t be rushing to loan Tierney out. Tomiyasu and Zinchenko have had a few injuries. Only 1 match gone and we’ve lost a player so for me Tierney… Read more »

Ealing

(our medical staff sent him back on and the player agreed) that’s what Arteta said in the press conference. after Timber stood up from the injury, he walked, and kicked the ball once from standing position with left foot at half time. then 15 minutes break did a short run, kicked the ball once. had a short backward run and then went down unchallenged. It’s clear that he didn’t sustain any fresh injury after the earlier injury. if it’s acl and wasn’t picked up at halftime it is as bad as it gets. the only hope is that is some… Read more »

Callum

I agree ☝️

Sheldon

The knock in the 1st half was on his left knee. When he went down it was his right knee. Unless the injury teleported across his body, this is a terrible take.

Ealing

he received treatment on the right leg in the first half, and pulled the same leg in the second half,

Sheldon

My bad. Just watched it back. The contact to the forest player was with his left leg, but he did get treatment on his right knee. In hindsight ,perhaps more caution shouldv been shown if his standing leg was the one that needed treatment

LGfromNYC

Questions need to be asked for sure, but cmon. I mean, the owners of our club just went out and spent 40m on the player. I am quite sure to protect their investment the club hires qualified doctors to make judgment calls about this. The club has even more of an interest to keep him healthy than even we do, frankly.

Anon

Nooo

Chrispy

Ah bollocks. First thing I though and dreaded was an ACL…… Hopefully its a partial tear at most.

loose_cannon

A real shame if true, hopefully he can come back as soon as possible. Keeping Tierney should be a priority now imo

Geefive

I don’t know why they didn’t pull him. He was grabbing at the back of his knee when it first happened. Why chance it? ugh…….

Peter

Incompetence from the medical staff.

El Mintero

Possibly but we don’t know that yet so why speculate

Mark

Really sucks especially when so early in the season nobody would have been questioned (esp with a two goal lead at home) if he was held out in the 2nd half. Would likely be out the full season if it’s an ACL tear. Hopefully we will decide not to sell Tierney if he is ruled out for the season.

Dutchgunner

Original source does not say end of season or anything. Months maybe.

Jeremy

ACL is a season ender. Even a partial tear is complicated. Not to mention the other niggles you get during rehab. Best case scenario Spring next year return but I don’t think we are that lucky.

Ebo

Massive difference though between complete and partial tear, so why is that not detailed? The latter would be indeed just a few months, a complete tear means season over and probably next season not being anything close to his best, with the usual impatient fan complaints of he’s no good why did we buy him and so on. I really really hope its not that.

batmanvanpersie

bollocks – i was so excited for our defence this year with him starting every week

Qwaliteee

FFS. It’s always us.

Drew

It also happened to Villa this weekend.

Arsepedant

And Real Madrid, twice in two days.

Snc12

Ahhhh damn it. Not JT12. I believe with him this season, our defense will be stronger. With this setback..really hope we don’t let go of KT3. He may not play inverted role well, but he offers smth different moving forward with his crosses, smth we need to have some tactical flexibility otherwise we will be predictable.

Jeremy

It was only ever going to be serious wasn’t it? You don’t just pull up like that with no contact. Also, it was quite clear where he hurt himself. Anyone who has seen/experienced an ACL injury knew immediately it was a tear. And sadly, that means we lose arguably our most exciting signing for most if not all of the season. That’s it. Zinchenko is a very able replacement but never fit. For me, without either of them that side of the pitch becomes predictable and largely ineffective. I am not going to point fingers, but a HT substitute would… Read more »

Ealing

I thought that they had put him back on the field, with the sole purpose of making the change at half time, so not to waste an opportunity for substitution.

El Mintero

3 weeks ago I pointed out left back was a mess for us. We have a “traditional” lb who no longer even makes the squad and is also injured quite a bit; (tierney). We have another left midfielder who plays lb and is injured 50% of time (Zinchenko). We have 2 RBs that are swapped into LB when injury strikes the LBs (Tomi and Timber)…both of whom are also injured a lot (sad news on timber obviously) and questionable how they play in this role to begin with (Tomi is not a fit at lb…timber looked good in preseason but… Read more »

Heiku

If it’s ACL and our medical staff sent him back on, serious questions need to be asked. If it was Meniscus I’d understand as it’s harder to detect straight away, ACL should’ve been the very first direct test they did at HT before even thinking about letting him back on. It’s objective gross negligence.
Not only has the club suffered because of it but they put Timber at risk, ACL has high probability that he won’t be as mobile again. We saw what it did to Bellerin.

Mark

So early in the season the physios really should be taking the most cautious approach possible with players, especially with knee issues, then they still aren’t in top condition. We had a 2-0 lead at the half and were in full control of the match so if there was ever a time to play it safe with him this was it. We had plenty of quality subs on the bench with Tomiyasu, Kivior, Gabriel, etc..

El Mintero

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that but what I question is why he was starting in that position to begin with when we could have played Gabriel and Tierney in the back 4 (as more or less normal) and not force fit him onto his wrong side, which you could argue contributed to the awkward challenge that injured him!

Yankee Gooner

Realistically, with how fit these players are, the players will most likely pass all the physical examinations that typically determine if the ACL is torn. When I tore mine (not a professional athlete, btw), two different physicians assured me it wasn’t torn because I passed every physical test they put me through–when the imaging came back, though, it showed a full rupture and a meniscus tear. Turns out, muscly legs can mask/compensate for ACL damage. For elite athletes like him, new procedures (such as internal braces) make recovery times relatively fast, like 6 months. I hate that this happened for… Read more »

Arsenalfanthem

There’s the old Arsenal effect. Zinchencko can’t come back soon enough.

Thierry Bergkamp (non negotiable)

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!
The man missed 4 games in 2 years due to illness.
I swear once you sign for Arsenal, you are cursed

Der32

He wasn’t feeling comfortable in one knee. Sent back on 2nd half, compensated in his movements with the other leg that ends up buckling strangely. He never needed to continue the 2nd half. The whole stadium was dreading his injury when he went down in the 1st half. I saw the Spu*s game and Poch even took out his goalscorer Romero for fear of head injury. Protect your players. That’s what the medical team is there for. Big L for them and the team but we carry on. Win the darn league and all will be forgotten. Timber can come… Read more »

Bleeding Gums Murphy

It’s seems to be very poor medical management.

Ealing

it’s the same leg, right leg receives treatment at half time and pulls right leg in second

0o2Be

Can we get a comment from that guy who gave us a break down on the last injury?

Ealing

The legend of Salibaba

Callum

Why would they even risk it? Clearly they knew something wasn’t 💯. Low iq moments like these are so Arsenal

Dr. Gooner

It’s a real bummer. I don’t want to get into the blame game. I don’t have all the facts and the club will probably conduct its own root cause analysis and so forth. Worth noting we just had a significant transition with Dr. Gary O’Driscoll moving to Man United this summer after a lengthy tenure with us. I’m more interested in what this does to shuffle the pack for Arteta. Left back options abound, and include Kiwior (tried there in preseason), Tomiyasu (tried and tested) and Zinchenko, who should now be unequivocally first choice when available. Timber gave us the… Read more »

Dr. Gooner

I didn’t even mention Kieran Tierney, who I still fully expect will leave the club this summer. I wonder though if this injury may change the thinking on that, especially if a really good offer does not materialize. Kieran may be a proverbial square peg for the way Arteta wants his defenders to play, but he is an outstanding professional who can and will give his all every time he pulls on the shirt.

VegasGooner

What a damn shame. The guy looked impressive.

Now we must rely on Zinchenko and Tomi to stay healthy if we get rid of Tierney. That doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Teryima Adi

It’s a footballer’s world. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Timber.🙏🏾

ArseSplat

Manure just signed our medical director away to cause the leftover, incompetent medical staff fuck up Timber’s acl or knob or something. Conspiracy?

Merlin’s Panini

Well, it’s a good thing this happens now before we sell any of the other fullbacks and leave ourselves really short. However this also means we could be one injury, in the wrong department, from relying on Holding again. Whilst he’s a capable backs to the wall defender he just doesn’t suit how we play.
Perhaps one more centre back will now be a priority in the window.

Henry

Time for us to loan Cancelo and Laporte, and sadly, try to sell Tierney to balance the book

karl.g

Depressing injury, as you rarely see a player adapt so quickly to a new club.

I would keep Tierney, instead of strengthening Newcastle on a pointless loan deal.
